Sega Genesis vs. Super Nintendo......

I was playing Contra Hard corps on Genesis and imo wow that game held up better that the Snes Contra. Man that was a good war between those consoles, but once I let my friends play Steets of Rage, Pitfighter and Toe Jam and Earl, they turned in there SNES.

Ahh yes the great debate.

I have to go Genesis all the way. The Sega Genesis is still the best console ever released as far as I'm concerned. My favorite game ever(Chrono Trigger) may be on the SNES, but the collective Genesis line-up is just too amazing for me to deny. Despite the fact that the line-ups wouldn't even be close if not for Squaresoft and Super Metroid, the fact that SNES gamers got sweat in their MK gives Genesis the win.

Ah, hell, they're both great. Genesis came out first, so I can't fault it for having fewer colors / no hardware scaling. Many hours of my childhood killed on both systems.

Honestly, though, I got a lot more gameplay out of my SNES -- as you point out, Squaresoft kind of tipped the balance.

Proof that the SNES edges out:

I have more folders full of SNES game music than Genesis game music.

Uhm hard to tell. SNES has Yoshis Island (best 2D game ever!), Zelda ALttP, Super Mario World, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Mario RPG, whereas Mega Drive has Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic&Knuckles, Sonic CD... I'd say SNES because of having the best 2D game ever, but I like both.

You don't have Terranigma. You lose.

Genny wins. Larger number of quality titles. You guys haven't mentioned some of the classics like Rocket Knight Adventures, Mickey's Castle of Illusion, Warsong, or Wonderboy in Monster World. SNES had some quality games, but not as many as Genny.

Besides, Streets of Rage 2 > Final Fight

Never heard of it. :( What system was it for? It's good, eh?

Actually, there are many of my faves missing from those lists, as they haven't been ripped yet.

See, somebody here knows what they're talking about!

Oh, it was my username.

Well, I'd choose Nintendo over Master System if THAT were the debate. I'm not blindly in love with Sega!

Well maybe just a little.

An SNES ARPG. Play it. It's more emotionally satisfying than 90% of the games released today.

I convinced my brother to ask for an SNES for Christmas back in the days with this very clever argument:

The SNES gamepad has 4 buttons, wheras the Genesis one only has 3...

Considering how affordable it was to have both, i would have to say both. Truely golden age of gaming...then again genesis had the buzz and word of mouth for being the better system to play sports games on madden and nhl *Joe montana 94!* , plus remember that one christmas that sonic 2, and streets of rage 2 came out? Sega wins!

I have both, and I have solid collections for both, but the SNES was better. I still play my SNES far more often than my Genesis, but still of them are still hooked up on a couple of the smaller sets in my house.

they weren't really that affordable. The genesis was $189 in 1989 which is almost $300 now. The SNES was around $280 by today's dollars. Games were WAY more expensive, with your typical $40 and $50 games essentially now costing $70-75. If anything gaming has become cheaper than it was back in the day. Back then it was actually much more difficult/expensive to support two systems.

True, but consoles nowadays offer less value for the money (in pure videogame terms). Back then you usually got a pack-in game and 2nd controller. Plus, memory cards are a hidden cost in most modern consoles.

holy fuck SNES by FAR

Super Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Super Castlevania 4
Killer Instinct
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 6
Mortal Kombat 2
Super Mario All-Stars
Street Fighter 2
Actraiser
Zelda: A Link to the Past
F-Zero
Mario Paint
Pilot Wings
Secret of Mana
Sim City
Super Ghouls and Ghosts

and most of this is just off the top of my head. :o

...and this is only the beginning. Genesis had some great games no doubt, but snes had a MUCH MUCH larger quantity of AAA titles. Especially ones that were unique to the system.

I think what it really comes down to for me is the quality of games when you take out the nostalgia factor. In that case, I think the SNES clearly has better quality titles, better graphics and better sound, and the games as a whole hold up better today. I had my share of fun with the Genesis, but in the end the SNES just had better quality titles. And yes, the sound and graphics make a difference. I'd rather listen to NES tunes than Genesis tunes.

Winner = SNES

My reasons? Metroid, FF's, Mario oh and a little series called Zelda.

I had both systems, and they were both fun, but SNES edged out the Genny for those reasons and more that I listed.

Honestly, both were so great that they shouldn't be pitted against each other. But if I had to choose, SNES would win hands down. Too many great games not to.

Actraiser, Final Fantasys, Chrono, Super Mario World, Street Fighters, TMNTs, Fzero, Pilotwings, Super Ghouls N Ghosts, Castlevania IV, Earthbound......

SNES can't lose.

Genesis's soundchip, for some reason, worked really good for techno/electronica/industrial music... SNES's... ehhh, not so much.

Overall, it's so tough to choose. There was such a great variety of games of all genres, across both systems. Phantasy Star 2, Landstalker, and Gunstar Heroes are some of my favorite games of all time, but so are FF4, 5, Star Ocean, Tales of Phantasia, Super Metroid, Zelda III... I'll give it to SNES but Genesis is pretty high up there in my list of favorite systems ever :D

SNES FTW.

Although I played the Genny at my brothers also a couple of times. Wonderboy 5, Chiki Chiki Boys, Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 2 were all great games.

Unfortunately I never got around playing any of the ThunderForce games or even Contra Hard Cops. :(

I love my Genesis and I still play Rocket Knight Adventures and Toejam & Earl frequently, but in hindsight I kind of wish I had got a TurboDuo. :/

I had an SNES, and my friend had a Genesis. It always seemed like I had the games that were more polished and AAA, but he was always getting stuff from the Sega Channel (which was AWESOME, I was so jealous) that seemed different than what I could get for my system.

Anyway, I'll say SNES, but the Genesis was cool too. And it had the superior version of Shadowrun!

I think the history books will always record the SNES as the winner of those two... but I did perfer the slightly more mature marketing of the genny.

Mega Drive could go online.

Also do not forget the Master System emulator and 32X + Mega CD.
Europe got treated good in those generations <3 SEGA.
Let's not forget about the games...
Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Sonic.
(Master System) Robocop vs Terminator, Alex Kid, Psycho Fox, Phantasy Star.

BTW yes I loved all the extra add-ons for the MD.

::EDIT::
Mega Drive = Genesis for those outside Europe.
Genesis had a 6 button pad.

ooh.. M.U.S.H.A./Aleste also had a kick ass soundtrack.. on the genesis.

I just read this whole thread to see if someone else would mention this. I havent heard every Genesis soundtrack, but of those I have heard, which is a lot, this is easily one of the best. So heavy and fast. I used to listen to this while I did homework, before I started going to raves and getting real electronic music in my life heh. I still love listening to this stuff though :D

Both systems rocked the gaming world, but I would have to give the crown to the SNES. Sonic 3/Knuckles was awesome, but against Super Mario World? Come on now :p.

Genesis, because of all the EA games... the EA sports games on SNES were complete fucking DOGSHIT by comparison. Madden was near unplayable crap on SNES.

Shadowrun was also a lot better on Genesis.

Other than the sports games and that though, I found I favored the SNES a little more. Both were great, great systems though... I loved each dearly.
