Sega Genesis vs. Super Nintendo......

For all of the great games that were released for both, I'll still go with my opinion that has not changed since way back then...Genesis. There were more titles I could sink my teeth into and it had a more diverse and quirky library.

Genesis games get boring relatively quickly. It always seemed to me that there was less to them. Maybe this was because Genesis games generally did not use battery backup compared to SNES. Also, SNES had amazing games. Off the top of my head, a few good games per genre:

RACING
F-Zero
Top Gear Games
Mario Kart

BEAT EM UP
Super Double Dragon
Final Fight
Battletoads Double Dragon
Turtles 4: Turtles in Time
Probably had more/better wrestling games

RPG
Final Fantasy Series
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Super Mario RPG

ACTION/PLATFORMER/EVERYTHING ELSE IM GETTING LAZY
Megaman X Series (Sorry but Genesis can't compete with these)
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
Super Mario World
Super Mario All-Stars
Super Mario World 2
Zelda: Link to the Past
Star Fox
Contra 3
Super R-Type
Gradius 3
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Killer Instinct
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania 4
Donkey Kong Country
Sim City

Genesis has plenty of great games too but I don't think it holds up to SNES. Anyways I have both (infact I have a Genesis 1,2,3 and 2 Sega CD's and a 32X) and they're both great fun. SNES just holds up better IMO.

Mega Drive could go online.

So could the SNES:

The SNES did too; IIRC it was asciiware that released a pad that had L and R as face buttons along with XYBA.

Despite the fact that the line-ups wouldn't even be close if not for Squaresoft and Super Metroid, the fact that SNES gamers got sweat in their MK gives Genesis the win.
MKII is all that matters in that series. SNES graphics + blood FTW!

And the NES:

Though it only supported one game

The SNES LAUNCHED with a six button pad and the Megadrive didn't get its six button pad until years down the line (though admittingly it's more comfortable than even the SNES controller at times).

Though some of my favorite games ever were on the Genesis (Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II-IV, Thunderforce series), overall I'd have to say it's SNES all the way. Better sound and music, better graphics (many more colors onscreen simultaneously, mode 7 effects), and just a flat-out stronger library in almost all the genres I love best (RPG's, action/adventure, platformers, fighting games, racing... about the only genre where the Genny whipped the SNES' ass that I actually cared about were scrolling shooters, and even then, the SNES had a couple of quality offerings like Axelay and Space Megaforce). That said, I couldn't imagine not owning both systems - there were just too many quality exclusives for each.

True. Though I rarely play my SNES anymore, the two of them are interchangeable. You can't have one without the other.

Back in those days, you needed both to get the full experience.

These days, you can stick with just PS2, and get 90% of everything worth playing. :(
