Sega isn’t planning more mini consoles: ‘We are not a retro company’

The publisher’s America and Europe CEO, Shuji Utsumi, was asked about the possibility of releasing new mini consoles based around the Saturn or Dreamcast in an interview with the Guardian.

“I’m not going for the Mini direction. It’s not me,” he told the publication. “I want to embrace modern gamers.”

“We are not a retro company,” Utsumi added. “We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.”

Going past Megadrive/Genesis for classic collections and mini consoles, is Sega’s version of Valve not making a 3rd game.
Saturn and Dreamcast ports, remasters, and mini consoles will never happen

No Sega your not a retro company. But we wish you were

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Just PR talk for having no currently planned products and putting a PR spin on it. They (or Nintendo, lol) didn't "become history" when they did make mini consoles and arcades, which wasn't even long ago, so why would it be the result? Would the US/EU CEO even be the person to decide this?

Though out of all the arcade minis between Sega, Neo Geo or whatever else I think it was Taito's Egret II that did things best with all the special control accessories, amount of games (it got Vol. 3 this month!) and the awesome rotating for regular and tate mode screen. It's just so damn beautiful.

Anyway, I'm not the target audience for that sort of thing (though I got the SNES mini for my brother in law, loaded it up with extra games etc.), I'd rather have games emulated/ported on main platforms rather than add more plastic crap, officially in Yakuza studio games or compilations, or not.

As someone who has to get the PS3 down from the loft in order to play Daytona, this is not what I wanted to hear from Sega; "We're bringing the rest of our best 80s and 90s coin-ops to Sega Ages", would have been the position that didn't ruin Christmas for everyone. Bad Sega, get back to your cupboard.

I bought the mini Master System and the Genesis as well as the mini Atari 2600 and mini Super Nintendo.
If a mini Atari 5200 is ever available I want one of those.

It’s funny them saying that when they have peddled the same core of md games over & over. How many Sega collections have we had that contained the usual sonic 1,2,3 robotniks mean bean machine, colums, flicky, bonanza bros and all the usual other suspects that crop up.

Smart companies learn to do both embrace their history while also making new stuff too. If they totally abandon their past in exchange for chasing the next new big thing it’s not going to work out well for them.

Shame they have given up on minis. Couldn’t give a shit about Saturn or Dreamcast but a sg1000 mini would be wonderful. The md mini was a fantastic one they really pulled out the stops for it. The Astro was sadly a bit half assed with that tiny screen they should have put a better one in.

The world doesn’t need another mini console. Just give us a compilation of Saturn games for modern consoles

Sega PLEASE

I agree. We don't really need more "mini" consoles that are limited to a tiny selection of built-in games. It's better to reissue emulated or accurately recreated versions for modern platforms. They could enhance the experience by making recreations of the original systems' controllers.

Sega could make a lot of money by releasing its most legendary arcade games in the digital stores of all platforms, and if they don't make more retro consoles it's because it would be complicated with consoles like Saturn, because they have released two retro Mega Drive consoles, mini game gears, etc...

I advertised for Google Stadia
Sega:
We are not a retro company. We want to deliver something new.

Also Sega:
HEY HEY we're bringing back Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe! ...and now Virtua Fighter!
“We really appreciate our legacy, we value it, but"

(Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio...)

also Sega:

"at the same time, we want to deliver something new – otherwise we’ll become history. That’s not what we’re aiming for.”

Translation:

We're not ONLY a retro company. (During the Dreamcast Phantasy Star became PSO... in 2024, Crazy Taxi will evolve as well)

That's the spirit Utsumi brought during the DC Era and he will bring it back again...

Sega was always my favorite. The master system and Genesis were two of the greatest consoles ever built, I also loved the Saturn but by then PlayStation blew up and it was a wrap.

If you aren’t a “retro” company, and whenever you do decide to release a new game on current hardware, it’s shit and sells like shit.

If you aren’t retro, build a new console as powerful to compete with Sony and MS. I’d gladly buy day 1. Otherwise please stfu.

I actually snagged a Genesis Mini for my wife off Amazon for Christmas. They had a shipment of new units.

I am so stoked to hear the Sonic OST on Christmas Morning. My wife rarely plays games but she still dominates Sonic 1. Very entertaining to watch.

Taito has you modestly covered, I suppose. No idea why Sega can't do likewise.

I really would have like a Master System mini to complement my other stuff.
The perplexing thing is that TechToy already produce a Master System for the Brazil market with tons of games built in. You'd think a unit for the US & Europe with PAL/NTSC hdmi output would be a no-brainer. They are, like, 95% of the way there.

"Nintendo games are like indies, and worth at most $19" 🤡
Wanting Sega's mini console is just a cowardly way of asking the company for a new console, that's it, I said.
no one here really cares about mini console, bad emulation, calculator chip.

Oh, fuck off. Imagine stopping the mini-consoles initiative right before tackling the two most interesting pieces of hardware SEGA had ever made.

You don't deserve the legacy you have.
