SEGA reveals LTD (as of March '22) sales for all of its IPs

Huh. Going by places like this you'd think Persona was the hottest cake on the plate, yet... it's way below SMT in spite of the latest 3 Persona games getting multiple releases and receiving neverending praise, mentions and recommendations?

I wish more developers would be as transparent as this.

I... am genuinely surprised to see Persona below SMT, when Persona is clearly the most popular choice when it comes to Internet discussion and SMT is usually the connoisseur's game? It's kinda like seeing Final Fantasy Tactics selling more than mainline FF. What's so hard to understand?

- Sonic: 1.51bn= trash
- Total War: 40.4m = its alright
- Puyo Puyo: 37.7m= pu what?
- Football Manager: 25m = trash
- Yakuza: 19.8m= bore fest
- Virtua Fighter: 18.8m= who cares?
- Shin Megami Tensei: 19m= good game
- Hatsune Miku: 18.5m= trash
- Persona: 15.5m= good game
- Phantasy Star: 9.8m = who cares?

But... Persona is the spin-off of SMT.

Persona was essentially a Playstation exclusive until recently. SMT games have released on various platforms and the series has existed since before Persona.

I'm more surprised we haven't got a virtua fighter 6, when it's one of Sega's highest selling ips.

Also Yakuza must be fairly cheap for Sega to make I imagine, as 19 million is lower than I expected when you consider how many games there is.

Yakuza didn't break out in a big way until zero.

But there was still 6 or 7 games prior to that right? (Probably more if we include the psp games)

Then again I imagine forever being in Kamurucho keeps costs down.
There were 5, not counting spinoffs. Sales outside of japan weren't that great up until recently. Yakuza 5 us release was delayed by years and only had a digital release on ps3. Zero was the first that had a big marketing push, was a good place to start story wise and later getting ports outside of playstation also helped.

As you also mentioned, they reuse maps so that keeps costs down as well.

Also what's weird is that until P3 the Persona games were called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona.

And are the Soul Hackers / Devil Summoner games counted as part of SMT?

I wonder if anyone's interested from the big 3? Personally nothing on that list interests me, but I wonder what Sonic might be worth and if the IP could be worth more as a film/TV/comic/Etc property than a games one.

That could make it a complicated purchase that could see some bidders we might not think of coming forward.

Presumably if a non games company does buy in, they'd then at least license the IP out.

Result: we could see some terrible sonic games made by anyone who wants to pay for a license.

Best result, imo, is that Nintendo buys Sonic.

They should include the Years the franchise has been active besides the sales figure also.

I have no idea Phantasy Star sales is high or low. Was this active since 90s or 2000s.
edit - nevermind. Look at Chain Chronicles, first published in 2013 and only had 3 entries with total 25M units and downloads. Now that's a winner.

They did.

I think the biggest gap was between PSIV and PS Online but there was a Saturn remake in that time. Basically it's fair enough to say it's been an active IP. They just keep miss-managing it.

Huh, didn't know Sega owned Hatsune Miku.

Edit: seems they only publish games based on vocaloid.

total war doing numbers. i gotta say, i always thought it was a cool concept, but playing it makes me feel like an absolute brainlet.

I found this surprising as well. Seems like Persona series gets way more mainstream attention than mainline SMT, at least in the west.

I would guess it's because of 2 SMT games on 3DS and 1 on Switch selling like hotcakes in Japan.

They're all the only games Sega continues to make.

If they continued on with Shinobi or Golden Axe, the way they do Yakuza/Sonic, it might've cracked that list.

18 vs 32 editions. Persona is absolutely the more mainstream title.

SMT has dozens upon dozens of games and spin offs. Persona has only 5 entries. And the most popular by far is Persona 5, which should account for 33% of the total, if not more.

Persona became popular with Persona 5, basically. Give it time.

I'd be interested to see the sales breakdown as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Devil Survivor games + SMT 4 & 5 comprised the vast majority of that 19m

Total War was at 22 million sales and free downloads in 2018. Troy added 7.7 million when it launched for free on Epic in 2020. The series was at 36 million last year.
All Warhammer games sold less than Three Kingdoms, Rome 2 and Empire but the DLC is printing money.

Persona was way more niche before. It's only really been P4 and P5 that have hit a more mainstream audience, particularly P5. That is why they're going back and making all the games multiplatform, they realize there is way more demand than they have kept up with.

But you also have to remember that P5 was really a PS3 game... It's been 6 years since a new mainstream persona game has come out. The industry is a completely different place today

I think it would be a good buy for any of the 3.

There is a lot of value in the IP that really hasn't been maximized.

Sonic would do well promoted directly by any of the 3. He used to be a console mascot. The Sonic movies did really well. I could see potential in making a Shenmue tv series and remaking the games in a modern fashion. Phantasy Star could be a big get as well and Persona and SMT have just got on a lot of people's radar, but the question is whether they are worth 3 billion dollars plus consideration.

SMT is an older franchise. Persona started getting popular with 4 and went mainstream with 5. What did you expect, exactly?

Shin Megami Tensei had an MMO which I believe was quite popular in Japan for a while.

But what that data really shows is how they really need to green light Total War: Puyo Puyo vs FIFA.
