A real tongue twister, though, is "Ryu." Keeping in mind that Y is a consonant, you also have to deal with that Japanese-specific R/L combo. And the whole word is just one syllable.

It seems to be unpronounceable to native English speakers. This is why every argument over which of the two commonly used pronunciations is the correct one is funny.

This is my favorite because every person making fun of Japanese speakers saying "rike" instead of like probably also says "RAI-YOU" or "REE-YOU."

I fake it by half-pronouncing it as "dyu" which would make me sound like an idiot in Japan. :(

Got my first Saturn ever a few days back.
Pad feels great and overall I'm excited to try the games I ordered from Japan.
Could only play Christmas Nights, very odd and charismatic game.

Thinking back at the Saturn history, it's really crazy how Sega handled it.
Launch games (VF, Daytona) getting remake version just a few months later, no proper Sonic game despite being Sega biggest IP by far.
Just crazy.

I guess since the art is from 3D Blast it's not a lie.

For some reason, in Japan, Sonic 3D Blast on the Saturn didn't come out until after Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast.

It's a double whammy. The Japanese R is crazy enough, but y is NEVER a consonant in the same syllable next to another consonant. Either it's in a different syllable or separated by another vowel.

Eh, ya/yu/yo slides are straightforward enough. I mean, they're the only way to get things like cha/chu/cho, sha/shu/sho or ja/ji/jo, and I have an easy time wrapping my head around those or other slides like nya/nyu/nyo. It's just rya/ryu/ryo that always tripped me up.

Man, it's been, like, three years since I took any Japanese classes. And even then, that was only 101/102-level stuff. I have no idea how I'd get back into it at this point...

I'm playing on widescreen haha. The Saturn ver. also seems to have better lighting/atmosphere than the PS ver. It's just missing the song.

I had the best stuff, but got careless and was surrounded by card demon things that seemed to multiply and I was dead before my menu button registered on the second to last floor (the last floor with enemies). I managed to get back down to the bottom and ... -something- happened (I have no idea what is going on in this game).

It's kind of fun in a way. But when you have great items and things go wrong ... lol.

I don't understand this appreciation of the Saturn, as it was one of the systems that nearly wiped out Sega, ill-conceived that was complicated to work on..lagged a distant 3rd to the N64 and PSX

It did more damage than good ultimately....(for the company I mean..)

Who cares what it did to the company? Who cares how it did sales-wise vs. the N64 and PSX? This is 2013. The Saturn has many, many games that are damn fun to play. I still put the console to work several times a week. You think this thread needs more justification than that?

I just moved my old 27 inch SDTV to the basement and hooked up the PS2 and my wife's old Saturn. I never even saw a Saturn in stores when I lived in New Zealand in the 90s. I guess they did have them, but I never even considered getting anything but a PS1.

i think the DC's library is commendable under the context of its short lifespan but really there are only like a dozen games that i consider REALLY good. Virtua Tennis is one of them.

it's true that the AR cart expands the Saturn's library significantly, but between the Panzer games, the Working Designs games, the Capcom games, the Shining games, the light gunners, the racers, the 3d fighters, the first party SEGA games etc - North America didn't do all that badly.

Hmm, I'm not as much of a fan of the US Saturn library as you are, I think. I own a lot of the damn massive longboxes, but I spin mostly imports. But I agree that most people underestimate how many GOOD Saturn games came out in the US.

Which Virtua Tennis do you prefer, 1 or 2?

I've only played 1 - still gotta buy 2 which was renamed Tennis 2k or something silly like that. somehow I keep coming back to Virtua Tennis, it's pure gratification.

next on my DC list is 18 Wheeler, then Fighting Vipers 2 which I'll need to import.

Agreed, I never got a Dreamcast myself, its library was more than underwhelming (then again I think the same of the N64... >_>). The Saturn though, <3 forever

Me too. I bought a Total Control 3 off Play Asia to play Border Down and eventually Ikaruga and Under Defeat with the dream-like Saturn pad, but my Dreamcast collection and wish list is very small and I'm not as enamoured with the games as I am with the Saturn's. (I recently realized I am put off by manic shooters, so it doesn't help the DC's case against the Saturn.)

P.S. Cool article! Never knew the WD bit. Thanks for sharing.

I'll likely be putting these up on eBay shortly with a ton of photos detailing conditon, etc...likely second week of November. I just wanna play through Panzer over the two few weeks. Just a heads up if anybody is looking for them. I'll never play Policenauts and I lost my interest in getting a full Treasure catalog after realizing I just don't care for them much outside of the shmups and the Nintendo games they did (since they are, well, Nintendo games). And I really only want to go on to 100-% the Saturn shmups catalog with a few extra games that use the unique controllers (Nights, Cyber Troopers, etc).

Got home from work just now to find my official Saturn RGB cable came in today! I'll post some pics soon, but I'm glad to see that they work unlike my Super Famicom official cables a few weeks ago. That might just be a grounding issue though. But the picture coming from S-Video is much cleaner obviously. So much so that with my cheap S-video cables, the picture would be affected by the disc's loading. Not to the detriment of gameplay, but you could especially see it on black screens. Not so with this! Can't wait to try more games to see what they look like! XD

Yeah, I really just wanna complete my shmups collection. These have been sitting in my collection for years and I've tried a few times to play Panzer but it never stuck. This will at least get me to finally play through it, I'm thinking. Not too interested in starting a fighter or platformer or american RPG collection. These are only few oddities in my collection. I'm keeping the one non-shmup, Elevator Action, since it is nice and arcadey...and my Cave Snowboarding game.

I have a lot of Dreamcast games. It doesn't have the absolute masterworks that the Saturn did, but it has quite a few very good games, namely Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Shenmue, Maken X, not to mention the ample love Capcom & SNK showed the system.

Absolutely, I mean no disrespect towards the Dreamcast. I got mine 11/22/99.

Saturn is often seen as the redheaded step-child, while the Dreamcast "coulda been a contender!" That's what i'm retorting. Maybe it's just a new generation's nostalgia, I'm 4 years behind the times I guess.

I just got a Saturn Model 1 off of craigslist and it came with Xmen COTA, Mr Bones, Night Warriors, Myst, Battle Monsters, Battle Arena Tosh Remix, Congo, Criticon, Wrestlemania, Creature Shock, Loaded, Street Fighter the Movie, Cyberia complete all for $60. I think I got a good deal but it was a successful trip regardless.

That's actually understandable. I never though of having a focus on a particular genre when I get games. I'm kinda everywhere with the exception of sports games and dating sims that aren't SakuTai of course. Maybe Tokimeki. But I can see that helping to curb any impulse buying that would otherwise strike you fancy with a non-focused collection like mine. ^_^;

Good call on Elevator Action. It sounds up my alley, I'm surprised I don't have it already! And Cave Snowboarding game?!

I know what you mean. I would even wear my "Must Play Sega Saturn" T-shirt and get kudos....only to turn into a Dreamcast conversation! (which I love as well of course....just...not when I'm wearing a Saturn shirt!) Let's face it. Most people only remember Genesis and Dreamcast as far as the mainstream go. But for us true Sega aficionados, Saturn will be forever!

Nice i was hoping so but i got alot of trash games in there as well. VS and cota were bonuses that the lady had found before i got there. I am more happy about all the unbroken cases my bomberman game was looking sad in a cracked case.

I have some abirtrary rules rules set for myself when buying retro games. They have to be 16-bit or higher, they have to be shmups, they can't be cart unless the are PC-Engine or SFC, though I'm thinking about getting a Mega Drive to get the Thunderforce games. It just limits what I go for. I picked the genre in 2008 really not knowing much about it other than that I love Darius and Gradius and R-Type. For Saturn I want a full complete Japan-release shmup collection. There are about 55 and I've got about forty so almost there.

The snowboarding game is Steep Slope Sliders. I'd rather actually have it on STV. Still gotta get one of those boards.

There are 3 main reasons why the DC is held in higher regard than Saturn these days:
1- Being Sega last videogame system helped emotionally.
2- DC and Saturn sold and lasted* more or less the same. However majority of the DC sales came from US and Europe whereas majority of Saturn sales were from Japan (and I suppose the forum/site you visit are based around western nations).
3- More refined 3D graphics.


* except Saturn in Japan lasted about 5 years.
