Many social commentators have argued that an emerging "victimhood culture" incentivizes people to see themselves as weak, traumatized, and aggrieved. In higher education, this has been associated with increased demands for specific accommodations like trigger warnings (which don't work) and the policing of microaggressions (which is ill-conceived).

It almost feels as if this research is coming too late since the pervasiveness of people declaring themselves victims in our culture has spiked and destroyed our social environment. However, it is never too late to fight back; it is only a phase.

Eh. I don’t want to be too hard on people who go through actual abuse, especially when they are kids. There are some people who’s lives get fucked up by some awful shit. So I usually reserve the word victim for those people. That stuff can derail a life. I realize the only way out is for them to deal with it however they can and get on with it. I just have no idea how feasible that is for someone who actually gets the shit beat out of them regularly by a parent, for example.

That’s why it’s so fucked up when people wear victim hood like it’s a coat they can put on to get social points.

Yeah in the discussion thead where I got this article, there was talk about narcissism manifesting itself in two ways, a superiority or inferiority complex. It seems that latter is the most common nowadays, and it feels as if it spreads faster thanks to social media. I don’t believe we will see the end of society however, it is only a phase like the extreme optimism on the rebound after the great depression. People will eventually realize these are negative attitudes that do not help you in life. Maybe schools will start teaching some of this.
