I'm guessing not many people saw this in the theatre.....it made

$11,137,801

Actually, I remember, it was in my theatre on Friday, but they yanked it out by Monday. Methinks it scared too many kiddies.

DOOOOOOOOROTHYYYYYY GAAAAAAAAALE!

As I watched it I more and more relised. This was a far better then the super happy dance through fun gay flower fields Wizard of Oz.
I'm not quite sure many people in this thread have watched the original movie lately. The first movie is hardly "super happy dance through fun gay flower fields." It's a pretty dark flick.

I loved Return to Oz when I was little...and I mean little little, like when I was 5 or 6 or something. It didn't scare me at all.

Someone mentioned the mental hospital at the beginning though, and that did freak me out a little bit. Especially after Dorothy asks what the screaming is and
Ozma
explains that it's patients who were brain-damaged after the failed electrocution treatment and locked in the cellar. 0_0

When I got older and actually read some of the other books in the Oz series (which consists of like 12 books or so), I came to realize just how off this movie was from the series. It was like they took random concepts from most of the books and just tossed them into one movie. Dorothy never confronts Mombie, or the Gnome King. She isn't even there when the Gnome King takes over the Emerald City, or when Mombie is defeated (Who never steals the heads of her victims btw). She never became friends with Jack, the Gump, or anybody else in the movie. She never rescues Ozma, there is no mental hospital, etc. The list goes on.

But either way, I think Return to Oz is a really good interpretation of what would have happened 'realistically' had Dorothy returned to OZ at one point (Which she did in the books but not for many years later).

Spoilers about who Ozma is from the books.....

Ozma was a boy at first. He had an abusive uncle or something. He made Jack and turned him animate with magic powder. He also built the gump and escaped by animating the gump. Ozma discovered later that she was really a girl, and the true ruler of Oz. They kinda took this story and one of the other books and fukkzored around with them to make Return to Oz. I still think it is a truer movie in SPIRIT to the Oz books. The plot is muddled and cobbled together from various places, but the characters and imagery seems more true to the illustrations and descriptions from the books.

Yes, I am. Stephen Schwarts just can't seem to get any respect in Broadway for whatever reason. Granted, I do think his rock-ish scores tend to be more pedestrian than other rock-ish scores - he never breaks any real new ground. But in his style he can certainly put out some great numbers, they just all have problems living in the show they end up in.

Loved "I'm not that Girl" & "For Good" as well.. Have you seen the musical? I must make it a point to watch it when I go to NY next year. Stephen Schwartz...well...I found his "Gepetto" musical to be quite good..although I'm not able to find the album or mp3s anywhere

"Wicked" is not based on any of the Baum Oz books. It's based on a novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. I've never read the novel, but I've heard it's extremely different from the musical in tone and plot (the book is much darker I believe). But who cares when you've got Idina Menzel belting out quite the possibly the most amazing Act I finale ever conceived and bringing the house down?!

Are there any video clips of it? Now I am curious......BI CURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111

I loved this movie. It used to play on regular cable every so often around Halloween, I think. I could never remember what it was called until my friends decided to watch "The Wizard of Oz sequel," around 3 months ago. Much to my surprise, I didn't realize that those two movies were one in the same, so it allotted me the opportunity to appreciate it more than I had when I was 7 or so. :) The special effects were amazing for the time, and still amaze me today (I can't believe I guessed right that there was a midget walking upside down in that robo costume). Didn't realize that little girl was the same chick who played the lead Witch in "The Craft." Man, she didn't grow into her face very well :/

I've never watched Return to Oz.

One of these days I need to rent the movie and The Black Cauldron as well.

Hell, I'd love to see Labyrinth and Neverending Story again. It's been way too long since I've seen the latter, but that wolf in Vieo's avatar scared the hell out of me as a kid and still looks creepy for a puppet.

No, I haven't actually seen the show, just listened to the cast recording and watched the Tony Award Performance (in which Menzel was obviously off, but everyone from every show was sucking that night in terms of performances IMO - there were so many cringe-worthy sour notes the scoul was almost permanently etched on my face).

Aside from "Defying Gravity", "What Is This Feeling?", "No Good Deed", and "Popular" the rest of the score leaves me a bit wanting. However, I think I'd pay to see the show just to see those numbers. I was supposed to see it in June before Chenowith left the production, but that trip got cancelled so alas I have yet to see it (never even been to NY actually).

No video clips that I know of unless there's a capture of the Tony performance on the web somewhere, but as I said it wasn't really a good night for anyone in the performance department (except maybe Avenue Q, but the number they did is hardly as taxing as the others). The official website has some sound clips (might be the same ones Amazon has for the album, I don't know), and some photos (most of which have been updated to show the new Glinda, not Chenowith, the original. I wish I'd saved those photos, she was amazing looking in the costumes for Glinda.
