SERIOUSLY WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS THREAD WAIT ALSO RHETORICAL

I had more fun with the first game and its two vehicular maps. I played about ten or so matches of Halo 2 online and quickly grew board of the experience. As cliche as the fratboy trashtalking is, there was none of it in my games. The matches were silent, with only a few words said for some technical clarifications during the game. I haven't played a multiplayer shooter that I've enjoyed very much since the first Halo. I guess you could say MechAssault is better/more fun. I haven't played any recent PC games though (save for Doom 3) so I couldn't comment on the latest offerings like U2k4 or HL2 multi.

p.s. Here's some of my favorite FPS online multiplayer games of alltime (no particular order other than the groups)

Top 7: (no order)
Rainbow Six - PC
Quake II - PC
Halo: Combat Evolved - Xbox
Tribes - PC
Battlefield 1942 - PC
Unreal Tournament - PC
Halo 2 - Xbox

Others: (no order)
Team Fortress - PC
Soldier of Fortune II - PC
Battlefield Vietnam - PC
Vietcong - PC
Quake III - PC
Ghost Recon / Island Thunder - Xbox
Ghost Recon 2 - Xbox
Unreal Tournament 2004 - PC

There is nothing distinctively attractive about Halo 2's multiplayer. What separates it from the assorted other rocket spam trash that's flooded this genre? Nothing. Oh, I can commandeer a vehicle. WOW, I can do that in the far superior Battlefield 1942. Perhaps it's what some of you are keen on, but that doesn't interest me. I need more than frenetic bunny hopping and plasma spam. I can play Quake -- which I also hate -- for that mindless style of play.

having the shotgun in no way makes you even close to unstoppable in a slayer game. you can take that guy out with 1 smg if hes not hiding around a corner (which he definately should be doing)

I don't see how having half shields is a bad thing, I mean, go hide. I mean take counter strike for example your shield goes down permanently and then you sit out the rest of the round.

If there really was no skill like you claim and it was all luck, then most of us would be a level 10 in ranked games no?

Its not hand eye coordination skill its tactics skill for some of those players. Get a rocket launcher/shotgun/sword and go to town. If you have the rocket launcher aim for their feet and pull. Most people will run right at you on sight anyway. Unless they clearly see that you have a SG or ES. then your best tactic is to let them come to you or either find people fighting and kill them before they know you have the sword or SG.
I never said the shotgun made you unstoppable but in a one on one situation i'd take it over a smg any time. specially on craptastic maps with lots of turns or small rooms where you can get up close, and a wise player knows not to chase people down with the shotgun.
How many encounters do you come out of unscathed with full shields? Not many. The norm is you both see each other on your monitor and run towards each other and spray and pray then you have low shields or no shields. Then some vulture comes by and picks you off cuz your shields were lower than his its not hard to put the reticle on someone and hold the trigger. again Spray and Pray.
UT2k4, Q3:Arena are better skill games any day than H2.

I agreed with you up until the last sentence. Q3:Arena is no better than Halo 2 in its 'Spray and Pray' gameplay.

Seriously...Quake 3 sucked...shotgun-and-railgun-hogging bunny-hopping assmonkeys seemed to love it around it's release, though

Isn't Counterstrike more of a spray and pray game than Halo 2? At least that's how I played CS....I just spammed the shit out of corners wherever people hide

And bunny hopping isn't rampant in Halo 2? Come on.

If there is, I don't see it happening much at all. "Bunny-hopping" ain't a good idea either since it's easy to predict where the enemy is going since the jump is always an arc. Go ahead and "bunny hop" in my game, it'll just make killing you easier

:lol

bunny hopping in halo 2? are you fucking serious? you either havent played much, or just REALLY suck. :lol

Yeah, I would agree with this(though I prefer BF 1942 vanilla). Halo 2 is fun online, but it really doesnt do anything that hasnt been done before, or do anything better than what has been done before.

As an offline multiplayer game Halo 2 isnt even a contender, having no bots is just pathetic imo.

H2 is uncompromisingly about xbox live. They don't give a shit about bots and nor do they need to. I haven't once ever considered bots (except during the NO BOTS IN H2 fiasco, pre release) I'm sure some people want bots, but halo 2 is not a game for people looking to play with bots, plain and simple.

Seriously, most of all the one thing that pisses me off the most in Halo 2 is the damn plasma pistol. I hate that thing charged. It's the most annoying and cheap tactic in the game.

running into anyone holding that and a battle rifle, bye bye. I'm trying to master that at the moment, charge pistol let go, switch, toss grenade and go for the headshot....

how is it cheap? you can usually only get one charged shot off in each encounter, and it's pretty easy to miss with it, which leaves you wide open to counterattack by an enemy who's likely got more effective weapons than you. and it's pretty damn useless against groups, since you'll be able to take one of them out at most, and your chances of getting another charged shot off before the rest of the group take you out are minimal. in skilled hands, when combined with other weapons, in close quarters, it's utterly devastating, but then... so are all the other weapons, in the right situation. It's all about knowing what the right tool for the job is (or what the right job is, given what weapons you can pick up).

the only weapon i'd consider anywhere close to 'cheap' is the sword, but only then because of the fact that it never runs out of energy... if it had the same battery life as it does in teh single player, it'd be perfect.

Best multiplayer fps games (current games) that still have a decent number of people playing them:

UT2K4
COD/COD:UO
CS: Source
BF1942

Okay, that just about wraps this thread up.

you dont need a grenade. just a single head shot will kill em :)

EDIT: and yeah, i'd say the plasma pistol is to usefull in halo 2. it tracked in the first, just not so well, but now, it is VERY hard to avoid a shot if your in the open at all...

Let me just say that I was pretty damn good in Q3, and CS, but for the life of me, I can't get over level 13 rank in Halo 2. Spray and pray my ass.....

Halo 2 IMO is right up there with the best action FPShooters in both strategy and complexity. If you spray and pray like Gigadense wants desperately to believe the game is all about, you'll never make it past the ranking of 5.

Exactly.

On a better system, the answer is clearly no. :)

Depends on your preferences. I'd much rather sit on my couch playing Halo 2 online on my 52-inch widescreen HDTV and hunched over my 19-inch monitor in an uncomfortable office chair playing Half-Life 2. Plus, I don't have to fuck around with drivers and whatnot.

Halo 2 is fun, id love to play a large online game sometime. However I dont like the health/shield system requires way too much to kill a person, which leads to people just searching for the Iwin weapons like sword or rocket launcher. It still isnt better than TFC though...just no.

it's like this....

Everyone i know has it
I can play everyone around the world i know who has it with a minimum of hassle and fuss
The maps are all the same
The controls are all the same
No one is running a faster rig
No one is complaining about lag
No one can cheat (at least, no one is inclined to amongst us anyways)
The game runs perfectly
And it's insanely fun

Whether it's the best or not is totally irrelevant, EVERYONE is playing Halo 2 and it's making it fantastic fun to do.

""I'm having fun, so it must be the best multiplayer shooter!!!""

I know you are being sarcastic, and i noticed you brought up the Bots and Earth level thing AGAIN, but ... this is basically right on the money.

Actually, you know a game is good when the last 3 threads you clicked on contain tons of moaning about how shit and over-rated the games is. ;) Where do you people find the energy to bitch about it so much?

Exactly... include "I still have money in my pocket since I didn't spend $700 for a new GPU and super-fast HDD" and there is no reason not to love Halo2 online.

No kidding. I wonder if they complain this much when they get a bj... oh wait...

I like how most people's reasons for why Halo 2 is so good are not related in any way to it's actual gameplay, but rather physical or technical conceinience. Oh, the system it's on is cheaper! I can sit on my couch with my big TV! All my friends play it! You don't have to install drivers! Woo! Couch > gameplay! Yes! And the points people make that are relevent to actual gameplay, ie that there is no lag or cheating, are both completely wrong anyway. Then again, I've had the same arguement for years with people who bash PC gaming and excellent PC games if for no other reason than that they are console gamers. So I guess as this is the generation in which console gamers have most come to recognize the quality of PC games, it is to be expected.

Yes. I am extremely critical of my bj performances as well, if my client is not happy, I am not happy, and vice versa. If only Bungie put half as much effort into outdoing their fan's expectations as I do outdoing mine, perhaps their payoff would have been as climactic.
