Shōgun - Official Trailer | Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai | FX

How do I watch FX? Addon via Amazon, its own thing, or is it on max or something?

Anything else on fx worth watching? Is that where FROM aired? Or that War of the World's remake? I've lost track of all these shows.
If you use Apple, buy it on Apple Store and you can watch it the day after it airs. Or subscribe to Hulu and do the same thing.

FX is a linear cable channel. So you'd need something like YouTubeTV to watch it on FX (and it'll have commercials). It'll be streaming on Hulu.

Just watched episode one. Digging it so far. Definitely getting Game of Thrones vibes. But like the early seasons aka good. Will definitely keep watching.
That "frog is the pot" scene though...

This is not up for sale on Apple, Amazon or anything else. Very disappointing.

It streams on Hulu, but I prefer to own it. Disappointing. Anyone know if it will eventually be sold?

If it's on Hulu, there's no real way of knowing. I'm still waiting for the Hellraiser reboot to go on sale, which was a Hulu exclusive released in 2022 lol.

Watched ep 1 tonight and absolutely loved it. Carefully made and thoughtful, interesting characters. A+ stuff. (I'm old enough to remember when the original aired and everyone was talking about it but young enough to have been way too young to care at the time, so all I remember is Richard Chamberlain's beard.)

Impressed by the first two episodes.

It's engaging, it's got budget, the costumes are gorgeous (hello Rings of Power, that's dough well spent), it doesn't look cheap (apart from Cosmo Jarvis's blue contact lenses) and it's well shot. I really like the way they handled the translation scene, especially with the Spanish priest.

What's to come looks promising too:

So far so good. Enjoyed both eps... I just hope they don't go too deep into the whole "we needa be like game of thrones" thing.

The violence and nudity was "gritty" but also quite tastefully done. I don't want it to turn into some softcore porn and snuff show down the line to keep meat heads entertained.

The history and story are too good and compelling to fluff about with that other stuff

First episode was solid though I guess I wasn't as blown away by it as other people here.
I liked most of it, the setting is really interesting, most of the characters are great, the writing is mostly solid and the story setup is nice.
But discount Tom Hardy is really bad and I hate the visual style (film grain turned up to 11 and a third of the screen, the upper and lower parts, are out of focus at all times)

But I'll definitely keep watching as the good far outweighs the bad.
Also it's on Disney+ for some reason in my country. First time ever I'm happy my sister set up her account on my TV lol.

I watched the first episode and it's solid so far.

Once I noticed how tiny discount Tom Hardy's hands are, it's almost impossible not to focus on his wee phalanges.

The crappy CGI sometimes breaks the immersion. They went too far with the fake bokeh.
That, the typical FX destaurated/blue "edgy" look and that fucking lens flare that seams to have been a real problem in Japan during the 1600's....

Other than that though, really enjoying it so far and some of the "colourful" dialogue takes me back to the glory days of John Hannah in Spartacus.

Been years since I read the novel and watched the old Richard Chamberlain version so it's nice to watch this with fresh eyes.

Just realised Blackthorne guy was "Barney" in Peaky Blinders...played a great part in the screen time his character had.

Loved episode 1 but my wife who is Chinese got totally triggered by that scene due to how much institutionalized hatred there is in the Chinese school system for Japan over WWII torture and the massacre of Nanking so looks like I’ll be watching the rest of the series alone on my iPad lol. Her exact words were “fuck Japan turn this off”

"What, two baths in a week? What, do you want me to catch the flux?" :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I'm not familiar with the novel this is based on or the original adaptation, but the first two episodes have been really good.

Way better than I dared to expect it to be. After the last halve of the first episode I was hooked. With the 2nd episode I'm a fan. The time period and setting is absolutely fascinating. Some of the dialogue scenes are killer, love it. It's very beautifully shot.

Regarding the dialogue, there's so much cyclicalness to it, too. They set up and pay off so many ideas, that if you pay close enough attention, you'll find yourself going "oh shit this is what they were referring to when they said x."

Like the idea of the three hearts at the end of episode 1, which comes back later in episode 2 multiple times.

Yeah, I love this time period, it's so unique and consequential.
I haven't read the book Shogun, but I did read Silence by Endo Shusaku so when they reveal
how Portugal and Spain divided up the world, and want to conquer Japan weaponizing christianity, and you start to grasp how this come across for the japanese....it's like "oh shit". The micro reactions of Toranaga are amazing, very reserved, it says so much. I was transfixed on that entire scene.

My brother studied japanology so I visited him in 2003 en 2008 in Japan. He gave me an overview of the entire history when we were visiting an old castle, one of my dearest memories. So I remember bits and pieces.
You can tell this show is made with love and pasion. I hope they can keep up with this level of quality.

This show is awesome
I live in Japan for 10 years and not even my wife understood some old Japanese they used, is very detailed, the Spanish guy is real Spanish , waiting for the Portuguese though (I speak all those languages almost natively).

心得ましたか?

Episode 3 was good!

They condensed a lot of things compared to the book, but the essential is there. The daytime scenes, where you can see the clothes, costumes and armor, are really amazing. They'd better win an Emmy for this.
Tom Hardy, er, Cosmo Jarvis is already better in this episode.
However, I have to admit that I still prefer the 1980 version at the moment.

ehhhhhhhh. dont think ill keep up with it.

its hooks werent strong enough for me. though i do love seeing a show during this time period and location.

dont love the catholic vs. protestant plot. severely don't like the pilot. character. casting. acting. writing. all of it.

the japanese stuff is solid comparatively though

aesthetically it had a nice variety of shots and production budget. dont love all the fish eye lens and vignettes though.

enjoyed the sudden decapitation and boiling. didnt enjoy the whole cliff/rope/portuguese bit.

In its first six days, the first episode of Shogun brought in 9 million streaming views globally on Hulu, Disney+ and Star+.

According to Disney, that’s the best worldwide debut to date for a Disney General Entertainment scripted series – as in one that doesn’t fall under the Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Branded TV, Pixar or National Geographic banners, via THR.

Domestically, the premiere episode scored the best streaming debut for an FX show on Hulu (with an assist from Disney+), beating The Bear Season 2′s opening episode. Outside the United States, Shōgun beat The Kardashians...

Well done, you glorious bastards!
