Shadow of Mordor deserves more attention. Come in and be hyped with me.

This game does look pretty interesting, however everything I've seen so far has you running through desolate wastes and enemy encampments, are there any friendly NPC towns?

I don't think so. You're kind of alone and behind enemy lines in Mordor, afaik

Zero interest in The Lord of the Rings franchise. It literally does nothing for me compared to Star Wars or Marvel.

I like the developers previous work and hope this delivers. No way am I hyped for this though. Every LotR game had been a colossal disappointment for me. I'm in wait and see mode now.

I watched that hour long twitch stream the devs did a while back and, well, I'm not sure what to think. The game has some cool features but man,it sure seems like a lot of just spamming attack on guys until you get to the main guy in each area then doing the sword sponge thing until they go down. Lots of rinse and repeat. I guess what I was hoping for was a lot more exploration that wasn't just constant combat. In the twitch, they were just constantly fighting guys, jump on a devil dog thing, ride around and hack, jump off then go to the chess board thingy to see what top level guys were left, see that he doesn't like fire and then, well, attack him with fire. The bosses were just so uninspired. Just slightly bigger avatars with more hit points and would charge you. Nothing close to say, Souls or God of War style of boss fights.

Hope I am wrong as I love the LOTR universe but hack n slash gets boring for me after a couple levels and exploring that just means moving farther into the grass until the next wave of enemies is cumbersome. When I think of LOTR RPG I'm seeing GoW 3 size bosses mixed in with epic Ring Wraith chases, stealth missions, battles that fill the screen and a serious leveling system.

The game looks interesting and I prefer fantasy to sic-fi any day of the week, but I am still waiting for reviews for this one.

I got the game as a generous modbot gift in the Steam thread.

I love monolith and the LOTR universe, but I loathe the monotonous, simple Assassin's Creed gameplay. It will be interesting to compare and contrast the two and I hope they spice it up a bit.

I was worried about that too until I watched a video where the dev said that they're mostly showing this Nemesis stuff since it's the biggest innovation in their game, but that exploration, finding secrets, and mission variety was a big focus for them.

No but they said in the stream that there are friendly story npcs. They're being really tight lipped on the story though. Also technically if you dominate groups they will become friendly so kinda for orcs. Just no actual town towns

Is Aragorn generic? Cuz he looks like Aragorn... I'm okay with this.

On comparison yeah they do look a lot alike. Honestly I couldn't really care what the guy looks like as long as stabbing things is fun. And it appears to be based on those gifs.

What's the release date?

Pushed it up to September 30th. I'm glad they did it to escape the October death zone but the few weeks after the 30th is already rented out to Forza Horizon 2 for me.

Also I'm sure the guys over at Monolith were fist bumping and throwing one hell of a party at the news of the Dragon Age delay.

I don't know, I don't particularly like the way the Lord of the Rings universe is portrayed in video games. So I pretty much ignore them all, and while I have looked into this game since E3, my interest level is pretty low. I'm more excited personally for Dragon Age.

Looking forward to your impression Grief.

I'm definitely interested in FH2, as well, but it will be the "buy later" game for me. Hope you'll be able to pick up Shadow of Mordor not TOO far off from launch!

The main character looks so fucking generic. Sorry it had to be said.

I'll be honest, it's one of the reasons that I've pre-ordered the game, so that I can play with his alternate skin.

..Which is also pretty generic.

Everything I've seen looks incredibly polished and high quality. This is going to be something special I reckon.

Edit: And to everyone saying this game is suffering from Molyneux hype, take the time to actually watch the huge amounts of gameplay that Monolith has posted before making yourself look clueless. The nemesis system has been demonstrated as it has been described, and does impact the game world. It's not some half baked, shallow feature.

Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an open-world action-RPG set in Tolkein's Middle-Earth, taking place between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It's got an Assassin's Creed feel in it's movement, a Batman Arkham feel to it's combat, and the open sandbox style of a game like The Witcher or Dragon Age.

Oh please. Haven't played DA yet, but Witcher is like the opposite of "open sandbox".

I was watching a gameplay vídeo and closed it when I noticed The Assassins Creed combat clone with lots of slow motion. I'm tired of this shit.

Yeah this game does look awesome I hope the lead consoles are the ps4 and x1

Monolith is developing it for PC, PS4, and XB1, while another studio is porting the PS3 and 360 versions, which will not have all of the features and the full Nemesis system.

Celebrimbor as the wraith? Count me in day zero. Cannot wait. I've always wanted to see him/the rest of the House of Feanor depicted, as this may be all we'll get for a long time, so I'll take it.

He does look like Aragorn but it seems like he's basically Kratos without being a colossal jackass.

Wasn't super interested in the game until I caught the latest story trailer. Then I watched some E3 vids, and now I want.

And, yea, tempted to preorder to get the alternate skin because I don't like the default look, which is a nutty thought.

Sounds better but I have no clue what you're talking about. I wasn't aware that this place was separate from the place in the Hobbit/TLOR stuff. I know nothing about this franchise. Got a link of somewhere to start?

Sorry, I just meant that as far as they mentioned, the game is stand-alone in the land of Mordor. The books, more importantly most characters from the books aren't in Mordor. I think the only thing you need to know is that evil lives in and comes from Mordor.

Just saying that I think the game will explain all that it needs, without bombarding you in LOTR lore with the expectation that you've read the books.

If you have zero interest in LOTR as an IP, whether games, films or books, I highly doubt this one will sway you.

The Nemesis system sounds incredibly ambitious, and if it works properly, I'll be pretty excited.

It's also apparently dramatically scaled down in the old-gen versions too, which makes me think it might be quite substantial in the proper versions.

Buying and hyped either way. I've even paid it off! :P

It's so weird, I am not a LOTR fan at all. But I am still interested in this, I don't even see it as LOTR. The time lines are so distant from each other anyway, it doesn't matter, does it? I know the latest trailer showed a returning character but I doubt it's going to be too intertwined.

Also yeah, love Monolith.

I've watched some videos, and I can't decide if I'm interested or not. On paper, the death system sounds kinda cool but also kinda silly. The gameplay videos I saw had the character doing super moves, instant decapitations, etc. which turned me off. Seemed like he was really overpowered.

I guess overall I don't really understand everything I'm seeing of the game just yet. That's not a bad thing, it just means it's kinda unlike what I've played before in some key ways, and because of that it's difficult for me to decide whether I wanna play it. But I'll certainly be keeping my ear to the ground to see what people have to say going forward.

The game has been on my radar for quite awhile -- I personally love third person action adventures and would love to explore the Tolkien universe outside the books/movies...

I'm basically in the same boat as Aeana.

To me, the game will live or die on that nemesis system they're holding up into the sky - it's either going to be incredible, or a vapid and predictable mechanic that only serves to make the game even more boring. Don't get me wrong, it sounds great... but it's easy to manufacture hype around something when you control all access to it; y'know, show the shine, and obscure the flaws.
