Shadows Of The Damned Review Thread

Fear 3 preordered? Definite pile of shame contender. I can't bring myself to play that series anymore after the abysmal second game (and the third isn't even made by Monolith)

Pfft. Everybody has this one backwards. FEAR 1 is the piece of shit. FEAR 2 improves on it in so many ways I can only assume that people's opinions would change if they actually compared them back to back. I turned off FEAR 1 after about 30 minutes of crap. Meanwhile I stuck with FEAR 2 to the end.

literally just came onto gaff to see if there were any reviews out for this game and this was the first post

thats why i love this forum

This is the wrong thread to get into this but I have to say that both games were great for different reasons. FEAR for it's day was a technical marvel, with a supremely creepy atmosphere, decent story and characters, badass weapons and the best A.I in a FPS ever.
FEAR 2 had improved graphics/ animations, more weapon choice, faster - more arcadey action and better variety in environments and gameplay (awesome mech combat!). They are both essential plays for fans of horror and scifi themed FPS experiences. Both also contain fantastic dark humour; caped in Sci-Fi pop-culture injokes.

On topic: has the music to SOTD been composed by the old Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka? I'm sure he at least contributed to the score.

Yes he composed the score for this game. listen to the main theme (other tracks are up on youtube but I'm saving it for when I play it)

it sounds like a winner

He did the entire soundtrack; this is his big "coming out" party, so to speak.

GameInformer didn't mention anything about single/multiplayer? I'm guessing this is a single-player game, right? If so, I might buy this :)

Wow, these are my exact thoughts on the FEAR series....

Please note that Monolith is NOT involved with FEAR 3 (for better or worse)

Catherine? I don't see that doing all that hot in sales either :>

Nah, Catherine will sell well among Atlus and animu fans. If anything, it has been marketed a lot more than Shadows of the Damned.

Bought earlier today after the first reviews showed up.

It sucks that the game will probably bomb due to the EA marketing "efforts".

Same here. I mean, I don't put much stock in Gamestop's opinion, but I was kind of expecting this to be panned.

Consider me intrigued.

Obviously because Gamestop tells Game Informer what score to give their games so they sell well. Obviously.

I'm sure Paper Mario 2 agrees.

If it ain't Fifa, Madden, Battlefield or Need for Speed then EA aren't interested. Unless it performs well ala DS1, then they'll sequel the shit out of it with massive backing.

All the games under the EA partnerplan, except maby Crysis 2, are fucked.

I got hold of the Pre-Order bonus soundtrack and uploaded it to YouTube.
Wait, did they give you the cd when you preordered?
If so, I'm going to go preorder it and pick up the actual game when I have the money.

On topic: so glad to see a suda game (and mikami) get such great reviews. I really hope this is a big hit for grasshopper.

Hmm. All these positive review scores have me a bit worried. I was hoping it was going to be a bit more divisive. It makes me think the game is a bit too palatable to Metacritic standards.

Haha, as dumb as this sounds, I'm totally with you on this. My favorite Suda games are Flower Sun and Rain and Killer 7, I'm all about the obtuse weirdness! I know this makes me sound like one of those horrible music fans who go out of their way to champion obscure shit and hate on anything with a hint of the mainstream, but honestly, Metacritic is a terrible gauge of my taste so I would not be averse to a bunch of reviewers seething in anger at some kind of hilarious mechanical jank.

If the game was good, why did they place an embargo till the last minute? Could have benefited from early raves for sure. Definitely intrigued though.

They wouldn't change; you just happen to be in the minority. There's a reason why FEAR gets mentioned the most out of any game in "Which game has the best gunplay?" threads.

EA has been doing this with all their games.

Just read the VG Arabia review... Some really high praise in there. But then, out of the few reviews posted on the site, the lowest score is 8.0. Almost everything else is 9.0 or 9.something.

Not that I'm doubting the game's quality, anyway.

Absolutely. And it doesn't sound dumb at all. Don't be apologetic about your opinions. You're not alone.

There's nothing to be divided about. It's Suda's crazy ass sense of style meets Mikami's amazing gameplay standards. There's nothing not to like. Suda didn't go in alone on this one; He brought THE BEST in the action-horror business with him.

Haha no I'm very confident in my niche-ass taste. It just sounds really funny to be hoping for bad reviews. I know what you mean though.

Don't blame EA for the lack of marketing push. This is an EA Partners game. Go yell at Grasshopper Manufacture

I want to play it but that studio is truly awful so far. I know this has a different director, so I'm excited, but I wish they'd put out a demo for me to really know.

Oh snap, just got a review copy delivered apparently. I wish I wasn't out and about at the moment. These reviews are making me anxious to give it a spin myself, not to mention the soundtrack folks posted on YouTube.
