After hiring a former EA and Oculus executive Mike Verdu to lead Netflix streaming gaming platform in the making as the VP of game development...

...it was revealed that the code of the iOS app apparently contains images of Dual Sense and Ghost of Tsushima!

Are we seeing a partnership unfold that can shift the balance in future streaming services? Could PS Now 2.0 be such a joint venture? Let the jolly speculations begin.

UPDATE 21.07:

We're also in the early stages of further expanding into games, building on our earlier efforts around interactivity (eg, Black Mirror Bandersnatch) and our Stranger Things games. We view gaming as another new content category for us, similar to our expansion into original films, animation and unscripted TV. Games will be included in members' Netflix subscription at no additional cost similar to films and series. Initially, we'll be primarily focused on games for mobile devices. We're excited as ever about our movies and TV series offering and we expect a long runway of increasing investment and growth across all of our existing content categories, but since we are nearly a decade into our push into original programming, we think the time is right to learn more about how our members value games.

Someone at Apple will need to explain why Netflix gets special treatment and can stream games through their app while Stadia/Xbox/Geforce can't. If this turns out to be the case.

So this is sonys plan that they said they were going to announce. They are going to partner with netflix instead? Like how they partnered with Facebook early on in the ps4 life cycle?

Hmmm.

You need data centers filled with proprietary hardware. Not sure what kind of leverage Netflix even has to scale something such as game streaming. It is not the same as streaming passive content.

If this turns out to be true it's going to be huge. It is a big step forward to bring PS Now to more countries (I live in Brazil and Netflix servers here are pretty good low latency already).

If they are really going into gaming it makes sense to partner up with a big company like Sony.
Because I definitely wouldn't want to play something with that trademark "Netflix Original" low quality (with rare exceptions)

Well if this is true, I may dip my toes a bit into it.

My problem with any form of Cloud streaming before was that there simply was no servers in our country and it was never supported. Netflix on the other hand is pretty good in my area.

Well, if it's true and they indeed have a partnership;

Damn, Sony provides the literal Netflix of gaming.

If they're really joining forces that is obviously HUGE but the question is to what extent... we don't have PS Now in Eastern Europe, so I have no opinion on how this platform performs...

what we do have tho is that rinky-dink movie and TV series streaming app for PlayStation 5 in "test phase".

It all kind of doesn't make sense if they want to go in all those directions at once, but maybe we're still missing some key pieces of the puzzle

Hmm, doesn't Netflix run off AWS and then their own CDN?

Not sure how that extends to emulating custom hardware like the ps5 but who knows

This would potentially lead to a circumstance where PS Now could instantly eclipse Game Pass in potential users. Would they also possibly change their business model and start doing day ones also? Or day one premium access the way disney + did with black widow?

Very interesting!

If true it's really the bullet of mercy for GamePass/xCloud. :lollipop_tears_of_joy: Instant access to 200M+ users.

Would be insane if PlayStation teamed up with Netflix to stream games, RIP xCloud, Stadia and Luna.
I have to agree even though Sony has a partnership with Microsft for cloud services so this may change the game, Sony can very well beat Microsoft, Google in the cloud race. Damn this is getting spicy!!!!!

How does this Netflix gaming division work? Do they actually make their own games or do they just work on licensing their properties to be made into games?

Hence the partnership with Sony. They leverage their strengths to hide their weaknesses. If anything they need each other.

MS is only a costumer for cloud HW from Sony if you read the whole story at MS webpage. For their archival system and AI imaging sensors. Same HW are provided to other major cloud services providers.

Why would they need to emulate hardware? Microsoft isn't doing it for Xcloud. They literally placed X amount of XSX across X amount of data centers. Nothing is preventing Sony from doing the same. They don't need to own their own infrastructure/data centers. They can just rent rack space.

AWS as a back-end does play in Sony's favour, I mean it wouldn't add complications for Netflix in anything like the same way as partnering with MS would, given they'd unquestionably press to move everything onto their cloud servers.

Also, if Sony are willing to play ball on the movie/tv front, they are a very useful partner to have.

The rack they are renting won't be in the same hardware specs/config of the consoles though? Xbox made racks specifically for xcloud.

Suddenly everyone is going to love game streaming.
No, it is still latency sensitive and limited (still love UHD and regular Blu-Ray much more than the streaming services) and game subscriptions / GaaS / Episodic Free 2 Play engagement based gaming still not for me.
