Ghost of Tsushima - dull and repetitive

I wouldn't discredit Yotei just yet as we haven't seen anything from it yet. It's possible Sucker Punch has learned from the repetitiveness GoT was and improved it with Yotei.

Anyway I felt similar but enjoyed it all around after taking a few breaks. Though I have to say - If I had to find and follow another goddamn set of footprints I was going to quit.

I throughly enjoyed the gameplay loop, and never grew bored with the missions or side quests. But I’m generally fine with AC games as well, which GoT is very much a Ubi style game.

I find it ironic when people say they love this game and then shit on Ubisoft games…

I like em both btw but man Ghosts really got boring after some time imo. Moreso than most of the AC I played.

I didn't mind the quest repetition. If anything, I liked most side quests which felt more serious and important than the silly ones you usually see at Unisoft games. What I didn't like was the open world that felt completely dead other than the occasional bear or Mongol Patrol.
People compare it to AssCreed but I felt the world was more like Far Cry 4.

Yeah, totally. Say what you like about AC, but something like Odyssey has one of the liveliest open worlds with NPCs and animals all over the map doing their thing or constantly fighting one another. It's hilarious at times, but you are rarely bored just moving from A to B or exploring which I could not say for Tsushima. It's the one thing I want overhauled for the sequel.

The game started off very brightly (I thoroughly enjoyed Act 1) but I have developed severe burnout and fatigue from this game. I am currently nearing the end of Act 2 in GoT and but it is difficult to finish the game

As I've spent so much time in the game already, I will force myself to to completion but if there is one thing I know, I will safely skip Ghost of Yotei. Whether Act 3 or the finale wins me over remains to be seen.

Pros:
- Combat is satisfying and fun. You have different stances which are effective against different types of enemies. It's also nice the game is not a carbon copy of Souls like combat (which has been done to death in the genre).
- Duels/1v1 fights are fantastic.
- Good visuals and superb art direction. Despite having weak textures, GoT looks like a painting come to life.
- Excellent sound design and soundtrack; this is one of the few games which makes use of a good surround system and has an excellent implementation of LFE effects.
- For an open world game, environments and locales are extremely varied, and the dynamic time of day and weather system is very impressive.

Negatives
- Repetitive missions. Lots of fetch quests, walking segments, and 'tracking' enemies. Once you've done 2-3, you've done them all. As a result, side missions are mostly awful. Individual character quests should have been condensed. Who needs 9 missions of running around like a headless chicken before you get to the meat of the issue?
- Bland characters and story. It is difficult to care about many of the characters.
- Ubisoft style open world. Playing GoT reminds me why I hate open world games so much. Far too bloated for it's own good.

I heard Iki island is a considerable improvement over the base game, but my only objective at present is to speedrun the main story and be done with the game.
You're absolutely right OP. The combat and visuals are great but IMO that was that was about it. It's biggest sin was the incredibly bare bones stealth.

People made it out to be some benchmark AC should be aiming for, but AC is better (not Valhalla obviously, tedious ass game).

100% agree. The sword styles are all the same damn moves just arbitrarily for fighting different enemy types because... And if I never hear the same dialogue from the archers again it'll be too soon.

Nope. Game was a joy to play through. Great atmosphere, great characters. Satisfying combat and duels. Ghost stance is amazing. Ending is amazing.
Middle section sure it slows down quite a bit, but the ‘collectathon’ aspects are nowhere near as bad as any other open world.

Sony’s most overrated recent game IMO. I quit soon after saving Jin’s uncle. I even started over a year or two later and ended up dropping out at a similar point. It is beautiful visually and the combat is pretty fun. But I found the missions and side content very repetitive. I also felt the world was incredibly boring to explore, and the dire tone of the game just fell flat for me. I didn’t enjoy spending time playing the game basically.

My man.

It gets severely under-rated here because 'lol ubisoft' but Odyssey was an addictive as fuck game. Beautiful visuals / locations, easy to pick up game play and a great sense of exploration. The two story expansions it got were also massive, bigger than most released games, and added substantial story.

Can't think of a game with more bloat and boring side quests than AC Odyssey. My God this game is infuriatingly boring.

Yep I fell off once it became clear there was not much mission variety. Still need to finish it but it’s a great looking game tho

I will get flack for this but this game would not be held in as high regard if TLOU2 never came out.

A great open world needs to be handcrafted and designed like Rockstar or Cyberpunk. This game feels computer generated and it just repeats itself.

The combat is good but I don't like how you need certain stances to best fight certain enemies. It takes away the flow and spontaneity of great video game combat.

I don't know why every single game these days just has to get compared to a FS title. Their games focus almost strictly on combat while games like GoT is meant to be a cinematic adventure experience.

GoT felt like it stretched Sucker Punch too thin as they put so much effort into the story, graphics and world that they didn't have time to design proper missions. With the island DLC they actually showed that they were capable of variety and more engaging stuff. Hopefully the groundwork is now so solid that Yotei keeps that up. Because I can't do another 50 hours of those boring missions.

This thread would not have been made in 2020. Back then, the mere mention of TLOU 2 getting GOTY over this game caused much fake outrage and pearl clutching.

And I have to finish that DLC actually. The parry system felt good ultimately. I was happy with the game all around.

Then don't play AC Valhalla...I loved Odyssey even though I admit it was a bit bloated, Valhalla in comparison feel bloated, slow, bloated and generally uninspiring, bloated and uninspired.Oh and bloated ....
Honestly I cannot express hom much this this game feels ....Maybe the most apt comparison would be those filler arcs in Bleach and that would still not be enough.

It's sony assassins creed, superior to the ubisoft games in some aspects, inferior on others, deeply flawed 7\10 game at the very best.

Best thing coming out of the game is the wind guide mechanic that should be used in more games, the music was also pretty great.

I'm honestly more """"hyped""" for shadows than sushi2 (i would take a new infamous over that one every day of the week instead of yotei).

Agree.

It's why I love the Dragon's Dogma games so much.

Because I can stomach a bad story or whatever other thing if the game is fun to play. Can't and will never be able to do the opposite.
The problem with d2 was the complete lack of enemy variety and the zero challenge most of the times, a good combat systems also need good dance partners and to not give you a partecipation medal because they think you have no opposable thumbs.

I have to agree with those complaining about the open-world bloat. It’s a shame because the combat is right up there with the best. I was not a fan of the constant travelling to mission start points, and having to listen to some of the waffle on the way.

I would have absolutely loved the game if it had been a shorter and more linear experience.

I’m still looking forward to GOY, but I hope SP trim down some of the fat.

It has a dull gameplay (especially stealth mechanics, but combat too), good art style, and extremely repetitive points of interest scattered on the map.

It has "Ubisoft game aka wanting to be accessible for everyone" written all over it.

In a world where Sekiro and Nioh 2 exist, I can't comprehend how you can make a game with gameplay so dull while using the same themes of Feodal Japan. The comparison isn't favorable at all.

I agree completely. I also hate this "look at marked points from the top of the cliff" mechanic. It feels like a chore. You don't explore the base yourself, observing it with your own actions, but just repeat instructions - look here, look there.

Agree. Despite it all, I love the setting and presentation in GoT, hence I didn't mind. I've always felt the game had character progression issues, it sort of peaked and ended way before the climax of the game.

Honestly, Iki Island is the best of what the game has to offer but in a 3 hour experience. I enjoyed these 3 hours more than the entire base game.

Bloated games is a real thing.
Too many chefs in these kitchens adding way more than anyone asks for and it ruins the dish.

I've been playing FFXVI on PC and brute forcing my way through the side quests, but side questing also being force upon the player, in the main story missions. This also ruins the otherwise great experience.

Completely agree. Open world games get boring real fast. I had the same problem in Elden Ring, Skyrim, Infamous, MGSV, FF XV etc. The only developer that seems to get them right is Rockstar and even then, I only truly love San Andreas' and RDR2's open worlds.
