Shawn Layden believes we're nearing "a point where the console becomes irrelevant"

I keep hearing this every generation and every generation it ends up being wrong. Consoles have been “dying” or on the way out since the PS3 generation lol
What happens when the console is just a cog of an ecosystem aka an entryway? The lanes that separate the console/pc/portable are no longer there.

Are we defining console by name a company states, its function or thermal max.

I'm sorry you have a bad internet connection...ir that PS Plus Premium doesn't work well where you tried it.

I also didn't say it was the same. I said "barely notice anything different"
Honestly what I've noticed is a lot of people who have this theory just don't seem to understand how far behind the rest of the world is when it comes to internet.
Shawn Layden sounds increasingly like a disgruntled former employee. Just seems to have a negative outlook on damn near everything.
Agreed. He reminds me a lot of Jaffee in that he thinks AA gaming and shorter games are the answer. I think shorter games can help but wont do much. I personally think with how well things are going with AI that it will be the reason cost are able to come back down in AAA gaming. Which sucks because that means a lot of people lose their job.

Which is why i'm not talking about something that's happening now of even in 10 years. It's 20 years from now.

So you mean indies. You’re in the minority around here. Most only care about graphics, not gameplay or art design.
I know I am might be in minority for not looking at graphics and performance.

Still I see a lot of complaints about too many remaster/remake (which are just capitalisation on nicer graphics), sequels and the lack of fresh IP.

People like high end graphics but I think a good part also would like to see fresh idea, games that bring something new to the table.

One doesn't exclude the other of course.
But it looks like dev put most of their work on performance and graphics. Which I understand because it's risky to do something different and not at the best possible visual fidelity (and gamers have a psrt of responsibility for that I think).

Anyone dissing consoles should be embarrassed, gaming starts with consoles, PC computers are obviously for printing documents and editing family photos.

and what I'm saying is even in 20 years these countries\areas aren't going to be any better off because it doesn't make sense for the ISP to make it better. What does makes sense though is for PS to sell to each and every one of these places because it adds up world wide. For the ISP though? It doesn't make sense to do it for those areas because building the infrastructure cost to much.

How is the bolded different from 1991, 1998, or 2004?
Consoles have a place because they are a lower cost of entry for accessing that software. The strength of them matters less than having compelling software(games).

It doesn’t matter which platform you prefer if it doesn’t have games that you want to play.

Having said that. I read the article expecting it to be about streaming or all digital, and it wasn’t quite that. Consoles aren’t going away anytime soon and I don’t see any one thing replacing them.

I was disappointed in the headline because I was expecting the bolded too.

Is it me ? Or have I heard this exact same thing since the PS3 days ?

It's not just you.

But in what way will a gamer playing a game on a handheld that cost $500 be the same as playing it on a $2,500 PC? I'm confused as to how the gaming space gets to that point within the next 10 years.

Exactly! What does he actually look positively forwarded to in the video game space?

He's a lot like Jaffee honestly. Wants shorter games, thinks indies are the last bastion of gaming, and that there are no new ideas in the AAA space just indies. I get the want for new ideas\innovation but COD is the best selling or one of the best selling games year after year there are lots of people ok with getting the same game or slightly different.

Layden is a clown. He was never this vocal as one of the head hanchos at playstation. He's a bitter old jaded man crying at the cloud in retirement. No better than Michael Pachter with these shit takes.

Oh good, more corporate executives bleating about how nothing except growth matters. It's as mental as it is tiresome.

Yeah some of these corporate executives are willing to burn everything in the video game sector to the ground in search for that extra 10% growth per year. It literally makes no sense to me. It's as if they hate video game culture.

He is not totally wrong the gaming audience if I recall is just eating itself with little growth on consoles. The only real growth is from memberships and services.

We haven’t seen real significant growth since ps1. But Saturn and N64 struggled to sell.

Switch has sold sure but Xbox hasn’t. The market big 3 is just swapping customers for several generations. Switch consolidated the hand held space.

Even ps3 x360 and Wii pushed the limits to 280 m consoles ?

I have zero desire to game on PC. I'll probably just go Nintendo only if that day ever comes even if they only have a handheld.
