I am delighted to share that I have recently joined #Tencent Games as a strategic advisor. In this new role, I hope to advise, assist, and support the team at Tencent as they deepen their activities and commitments within the industry to which I've devoted the majority of my career. We are at an epoch defining moment in gaming and interactive entertainment. There are many possible roads ahead but only a few are profound, broadening, inclusive, edifying, inspiring, and/or sustainable. I am thrilled to continue this journey of discovery and thank Tencent for the opportunity

Shawn, it was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them.

For those of us who have no idea who this dude is by name alone:

Shawn Layden is an American businessman and was the Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios. Previously, he served as the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, executive vice president and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International. Wikipedia

This company is weird to me. I have a hard time naming many of the Embracer teams, but I know some at least. With Tencent I can't name a single game from them. Except of course, their investment in Epic alone is making them one prominent figure in the buisness. Tencent games' wiki is rather barren with infos, making it sound like all they do is mobile games for someone else's IPs.

I can't remember the timing of his departure, but if Layden was involved with PlayStation's move to California, it would have prepared him well for this new role.

Ah yes, I myself also follow roads that are so profoundly broadening that they become inclusively edifying to inspire sustainability.

His legacy at PlayStation will be remembered as keeping the sleeping giant known as XBox alive by making PlayStation a one dimensional company. Shawn Layden never understood gamings true potential.

Lol. Wasn't he the guy who warned about industry consolidation that is "enemy of diversity?"
And he is joining Tencent? Company that is epitome of industry consolidation?

I was going to make a lazy joke about Layden selling Sony secrets to the CCP.......but I'm sure they have most of their shit already, lol.

Might be an idea to add this post from his LinkedIn acc

I wonder what he means by this "we are at an epoch defining moment in gaming and interactive entertainment. There are many possible roads ahead but only a few are profound, broadening etc.."

I wonder which road he think is the best?
Well they're definitely hiring him to help them make inroads in the western console market. He doesn't know anything about streaming, PC, or the East compared to Tencent.

But he's the wrong guy for that. He thinks that you need 500 million subscribers to make something like Gamepass work.

I'm not claiming that's why they hired him, just that the general direction I see Tencent going with their acquisitions. And time has certainly proved him wrong in that take.

Tencent buying sony
Then Shawn Layden will fire Jim Ryan and get his revenge.

(I actually don't know if these guys have an issue with each other, but I'm sure I've seen it hinted before that they don't like each other & part of the reason Shawn isn't at Sony anymore)
