Shawn Layden says PS6 will not be "fully discless"

I expect the PS6 digital to be the default but there will be a disc version and you'll be able to buy the disc drive on the side again. USB-C kinda changed everything thankfully.

Digital only consoles are so pointless to me and defeat the point of having a console. The idea is you have games for that specific system. If it's all digital, you have a PC that is locked to 1-2 generations. No thanks.

Yeah, move onto Nintendo if that happens.

Luckily Sony have a big Asian audience which is primarily physical which they won't want to abandon.
I assume that a possible drive will be restricted in its functionality and the freedom it offers to players. The current add-on drive already shows the first signs of this, especially the required online activation.

Perhaps the PS6 drive will require an online connection at certain intervals.
Maybe the use of the drive will be tied to the PS+ service.
It is also possible that, similar to the PS3 and Vita era, there will be "online passes," meaning that a second-hand drive can only be activated for a fee.

Who can guarantee that the servers for said activation will remain online for as long as I want to use my purchased hardware and games?

Judging by the current course Sony is taking, they will likely continue pushing digital content and make things as difficult as possible for physical media lovers.

There might just be enough functionality for Sony to claim that they are offering a drive and giving players a choice. However, I don't currently believe that Sony will provide a truly offline alternative to PSN.

I dont think ps6 will have a disk drive. dinosaurs gotta move on.
Al Pacino Money GIF

I'd imagine they go the route of PS5 Pro and only have the external disc drive sold separately. How many publishers will bother making physical versions at that point is the question.

If you want digital only, you'll get nothing more than $20 for AAA games from me. I don't buy permissions to rent my games for more than that.

Why $20? Did you ever rent a game at Blockbuster? My parents never would take me back then Eric Andre the fee for me not returning it. So it typically cost me $20 to rent games. Lol

As long as it stays around 30% of the games sold on the platform i would say they have to keep supporting it. The problem is the now mandatory online activation for the disc drive addon (not a problem now but could become a problem in the future). The OG PS5 is now more valuable because you dont need that, its crazy when you think about it, if you wanted you could use it like a classic console without a PSN account and never connecting to the internet. Not sure what happens with Dualsense firmware updates in that sense, i know the console firmware can be updated via discs.

It makes sense, theoretically it could be used for kernel exploits in future if the installation was completely offline. There are similar hardware exploits with previous consoles.

It becomes a problem if Sony shut off the ability to register the drive in future.

id like a cool new proprietary medium
...something that allows helper-chips like in the SNES days

but i guess as long as digital is an option, cant have helper-chips
ugh just another reason digital sucks

I was thinking more along the lines that publishers would mainly stick with those cheesy $100 "collector" editions as what would be made available physically.

The way things are going, AAA might be dead by the time the PS6 comes out... so it might just be a COD/Fortnite/Sports Games box and not much more.
