Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Doesn't make sense to me either unless:
  • Sony Japan is not a good partner for these smaller studios, has screwed them over in the past.
  • They are trying to grow their install base by continuing on a MS console.
  • Perhaps the devs just like working with MS, possibly because of moneyhat possibly because MS gives them a better deal.

Either way, I don't own a XONE and never will so if they eventually come out for PS4 cool if not, c'est la vie.

Since I have an XB1, I'm fine with this but it's still very interesting. Sony did screw over indie/non-3D devs in the past. The PS3 was difficult to develop for and the 360 made it easy to get smaller games. Sony changed their tune, and near the end of the PS3 life-cycle, we start seeing more shmups (even Raiden).

There's a game by the name of Volgarr - kind of inline with shmups - oldschool. very tough, 16-bit art, etc. The dev had a hard time getting on Sony platforms, but MS easily hooked them up for an XB1 port. Volgarr is a hardcore game. My guess is Sony is just very selective and still want things that have broader appeal.

With all their 3rd party focus, especially on Vita, I just have no idea what's going on with Sony.

Mixed messages for sure.

Oh well I guess that poster who is complaining has Galax-Z to look forward to, lol.

Shooter fans go where the shooters go so XBox One is no biggie.

I just hope it truly is region-free and not tagged with some silly IP blocking or something. And hoping for retail releases (since those are fun to buy).

I love shooters, always have and always will. but I honestly have no problems not playing shooters developed for a console I have no interest in. I still play tons of awesome games on the Turbo/PCE, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn, and PS3. I just find it a shame that these devs can't just make games for both, especially this time since the hardware is as similar as it is between both platforms. I'm at peace with it, have been for the entire PS3 generation. Not sour grapes as much as it is a curiosity for me.

you're missing out on some insanely awesome titles by limiting yourself to a specific console though ^

i.e. the 360 had an insane catalog of shmups this gen with one of the (imo) greatest of all time - mushihimesama futari.

in addition to
espgaluda 2, mushihimesama hd, akai katana, death smiles, death smiles iix, muchi muchi pork/pink sweets, dodonpachi daioujou, dodonpachi daifukkatsu, dodonpachi saidaioujou, guwange, raiden fighters aces, ginga force, eschatos, shooting love (all 3 releases), etc..

with sucha small consumer base, it's hard to expect developers to take the risk of putting their titles on multiple platforms. I actually wouldn't be surprised if ketsui sold like crap on PS3 since there really isn't much of a market for shmups on the console since most diehard fans hopped on the xbox 360 train anyway.

the main point he was trying to make is that if you're a fan of shooters and you want the latest and greatest, fans already know that they will have to follow the devs on whatever platform they choose.

That is kinda weird. Modern systems are pretty much commodities at this point (save Nintendo consoles, which do their thing differently). Not much difference between the One and the PS4 and a PC. As a shooter fan it would seem because One is getting shooters that is the one you should actually have interest in. Unless you are truly enamored with Sony first-party stuff, then I can understand, a little.

I own an Xbox and 360, I replaced 5 Xboxes and 2 360s and am pretty much done with MS hardware. Yea there is a lot of great stuff on XBL but for me not enough to warrant buying MS hardware. MS 1st party stuff doesn't interest me at all.

1st party stuff in general doesn't interest me with the exception of Nintendo but I still bought their console for 3rd party games like TW101, Bayo2, and X. I get tired of the sony cinematic-based popcorn games pretty quickly... especially when they try to make every scene an "edge of your seat" experience like action movies and it ends up being eye roll-worthy. I also don't like the microsoft first party FPS games.

3rd party games are typically what sell me on a console - mostly shmups, survival horror, hack-n-slash, and point and click adventures... none of which are typically made by 1st party studios.

oh no way... are you sure? I would assume they would be second party then unless they were some how bought out by Nintendo and absorbed as a first party. they originally developed games for ps2/gc.

edit: looks like you're right and since 2007 too. no idea how I wasn't aware of this haha.

but there's still devil's third as well ;)

One would argue the One is a lot different from a PC because of the ESRAM pipeline which doesn't exist anywhere else, is hard to optimize for, and basically acts as a huge processing bottleneck for anything not specifically built to use it. It's basically this generation's Cell processor - MS's offering is the one more technically difficult to program for this time, not Sony's.

Sorry all didn't mean to sidetrack the thread.

Here's a pick of a neat little shooter I recently picked up for the PCE.

No scoring(!) at all, but a pretty fun game with interesting story/concepts.

Yeah, but that does not mean much to the average consumer (like me). They are all pretty similar. It is usually about the first-party titles.

But yeah I'm buying a WiiU for a 3rd party game, Bayo 2, lol

Gotta get that SM3DW and the Spin-off at least!

Yea same here, really really love old style anime and PCE Covers.

Here's another of my fav's I got a little while back I think I posted it in the PCE thread. Gorgeous.

Goddamn that Tatsujin cover is hot fire. I have the NA Genesis version (Truxton) and the shit is not even in the same galaxy.

Not a shooter but still thought this one looked dope..

damn, would you happen to know the artist?

wow, i remember this game. haven't seen this cover posted in years! always liked it in the past.

Ikaruga is currently a choice in the Steam Sales' "Community's Choice" (so you have to vote what deals you want to see next). So if you want it cheap (€2.25), vote for it!
It's up against Dark Souls, though, so don't expect too much.

I feel like most people in this thread probably already own multiple copies >_>

I voted for it anyways though.

I'm voting, but I'm gonna buy Danmaku Unlimited 2 instead (when the sale ends, only have 2.50 I got from a lucky foil card)

I think shmup retail releases at this point for next gen are gonna be only a few if any.

Has anyone checked out the Resogun DLC?

It's pretty awesome - both the Survivor mode and Wrecking Ball mode are better than the original mode in every way (imo).

What I disliked the most about the original was the constant back and forth looking for humans is removed from Survivor, and they now serve as powerups and bonuses. It's now focused on shooting everything, like a proper shooter.

Wrecking Ball is really hard to describe, but REALLY addicting. You have no weaping except for a charging radial bomb. You use this to propel balls to kills enemies on the screen. It's sort of like pinball, with multiballs and rebounding physics.

Anyone who wasn't too hot on the original game should give it a try - it completely changes the game in better ways.

Yup its pretty great, I hit 10M last night on survivor, more than doubling my previous hi score.

Also here is a shameless plug for my tatsujin/truxton ship I created with the editor.

I've been getting more interested in modern shooting games these days and really like Raiden IV from moss. With the blaze version coming out, what is the consensus on Caladrius?

I like it well enough. It feels like a MOSS game. Slow ship, fast bullets, lots of crazy weapons. It's not my favorite, but it's easily in the "solid" category of shooters.

Speaking of Caladrius Blaze, there was a new character revealed a few days ago:

http://caladrius.mossjp.co.jp/ps3/b08.html

Anybody else get the feeling they're phoning these new designs in? That seems super lazy.

Could anyone point me in the direction of some good shmups on Android. I see that they have Ikugra and Dodonpachi but see they have pretty lackluster reviews due to bad porting. I don't want to waste my money. Thanks in advanced.

Yeah - they're pretty generic IMO. Still, looking forward to playing this soon!

i think it's his style.

I know the character designer has a very clean and simple style, but that latest character seems super lazy to me, even by those standards. Let's make her the twin of the other girl from before, but make her all girly. It's a lazy characterization trope combined with a boring design. Whatever, she's just there to get blown up. It is a little weird to be discussing character design in a shooting game after all.

Oh, and if anyone still cares, it looks like UFO Interactive finally fixed stick support in Raiden IV: Overkill. US ver. 1.02 weighs in at somewhere around 41 MB's. Not sure when that happened, my PS3 has been collecting dust over the past few weeks.

Going digital and JP store only wouldn't entirely surprise me.

Just struck me as a 'what are you doing!?' move, the PS4 has an install base in Japan, not a huge one but it at least exists. The XB1 has no install base since it isn't out yet, and it's extremely likely to sell less than the 360 did.

Last time it made sense, but many things are different now.

Steam sale has been wonderful for shmups.

Reflex
Ikaruga
scoregasm
super killer hornet (regretting this one)
Danmaku Unlimited 2
Pixel boy and the Ever Expanding Dungeon (its like twin stick meets Binding of Isaac!)

...and that still doesn't even cover all the ones I already owned and haven't gotten yet. Looking reaaaaaaaaaally hard at Astebreed.

That's Akihiro Yamada. He did the artwork for the Record Of Lodoss War: The Lady Of Pharis manga, as well as design work on Castlevania: Dracula X and Front Mission 3. He rocks. Seriously.

Sorry for the off-topic. Hey gaiz, howz dat Danmaku Unlimited 2 treatin' yall?

Made some Thunder Force VII art in the retro 80s style similar to Blood Dragon. Though, I wish I could use the actual font. Anyone know what it is? I've been searching around.
Wait, there's a new ThunderForce coming out?! *scours thread*
