Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

The upcoming Fantasy Zone II DX port is even better, I think. They added a completely new mode called Link Loop Land that's very fast and quite manic.

CAVE has never been married to a certain price point or a certain format, they've acquiesced on these supposed sticking points many times now.

The issue is that both their arcade and consumes games divisions have been gutted and they've allegedly lost many of their key personnel, and they've repeatedly stated that they will no longer be investing in or directly developing any more consumer ports of their own games.

I'm not saying that their games will never be ported anywhere else--they're still open to external licensing, so there are opportunities for other publishers/devs with ins at CAVE to license these games and port them to whichever platforms they like, provided they're willing to finance everything and handle the work themselves--but CAVE cannot and does not want to do these things on its own.

And hopefully Degica, Nyu Media, Playism, or other similar companies are willing to flip the bill.

I seriously doubt those companies have the kind of cash Cave expects to get for their license.

Well from what everyone is saying here they aren't getting much cash anyways. Plus they would just publish their games... not buy out the IP.

Anyways, looks like Poland is number one in the Shmups department with Sky Force. At least they are porting their game to the PC.

I know this isn't the B/S/T thread, but I'm having a hard time tracking it down.

Oh wow. Triangle is listed as the publisher, so probably a digital release. Was this any good? I don't remember ever seeing any videos of it.

I would automatically say that it's not worth wasting ones time with, but I hate Triangle Service, so my opinion may be a bit biased. If I was being objective, I'd say depends on the price. Under $10, go for it, anything else, forget it. It's essentially a shmup mini-game collection.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a minigame collection--there are a bunch of minigames, yes, but the main draws are Exzeal and Trizeal which are full games.

It is a great little set. Packed with tons of fun stuff...including the Shmups Skill Test. Which would be even more fun having all the commands translated.

Cho Aniki Zero is on sale on US PSN for $3, sell me on this game and is the original PSX Cho Aniki game worth getting?

I can't believe how I paid just 24$ for the Cave The Best sku less than a year ago thanks to a deal posted in this very thread (or was it the Cave's thread, dunno) and last week they offered me $150 cash for my *used* copy 0_O
I've almost caved in but in the end I'm glad I refused since unless they port it again in the future this one's bound to only go up and up in the future. Mint sealed copies easily sell for $350.

Already? o_O
This could be one of my most valuable games soon then.

I wonder how much my Ketsui PS3 LE will be worth once that's sold out. Given the low sales, there can't be that many copies.

That's absurd. I suppose a reprint is out of the question this late in the 360s life too. Shame.

If you dig the novelty, go for it. I love Masaya, but I admit they miss more often than they hit.

Who actually developed Cho Aniki Zero? Masaya hasn't existed for a while now, and the only thing I can find says Zero was made by extreme Co., Ltd. And the only other stuff they seem to develop is mobile mahjong games. They're also the current distributor for Masaya's old stuff, having published a bunch of their PS1 Classics on JPSN.

Also Cho Aniki Zero isn't very good.

Extreme owns the Masaya name and all their IP. In recent times, they've announced an Assault Suit Leynos remake for PS4 (developed by Dracue, makers of Gunhound EX) and a new Langrisser game for 3DS, developed internally.

I took a quick look at the credits for Zero and it seems that a good chunk of the people who worked on Zero had worked on previous Cho Aniki and Masaya games, so I guess there's some pedigree there.

The broader issue is that Cho Aniki was never a consistent series and rarely a good one, I suppose.

So I snagged up a copy of Gradius V off of amazon a while back. Got a great deal for it, it was one of those deals that sounded to good to be true but the buyer had great feedback and sure enough it was legit. Paid $30 for the game with disc, manual and game case which were all in pristine condition.

Started playing it again tonight, I haven't played it in nearly a decade and holy shit I forgot how awesome this game is. Only made it to level 3 tho......... so hard to recover if you die at a bad spot :(

Depending on the respawn type it's easier to recover than the older games, I think. You have the chance to collect your options after dying in the default setting. You can choose to do the checkpoint thing if you want though, haha.

Yea you can get the options back but it's getting stuck with the vic viper in default speed after dying that hurts me the most :/

I should prolly do the checkpoint thing instead of just respawning where I died.

Never gonna happen.
It's also the only really valuable Cave's game on 360 now that the dust has settled. All their other releases have at the most kept their mrsp (even for LEs and SLEs) but in plenty of cases you can find them sealed for 50%off their original price at launch.
Also the great thing about buying used from Japan is how the discs, boxes, etc. are all in pristine conditions as far as my experiences go.

Got one! I can't believe the site had it. $75. Could've been worse!

$75 for a copy? That half what it sells (not goes, actually sells) on eBay for used copies, it's a fantastic deal, it'd be great if you could tell us where did you find a copy and in what conditions.

Regardless, congrats, exceptional deal!

edit: just to be clear, the prices I quoted above are for The Cave The Best version (I was referring to the version I own but maybe it wasn't clear) which is weirdly more valuable than the regular edition. You can easily find the latter for 100Eur used (almost double that for a sealed copy), maybe even less than $100/90 if you're lucky.
Sealed CTB sku it worth almost double a regular sealed FPE copy.

Brand new "cave best" version from Videogames New York. They have an online store, but only a few left!

Holy fucking shit
I'm not a scalper and don't have money to spare anyway :P Also I've never used them and I,m not aware if they ship internationally, but I'm baffled someone like them isn't aware of the market value... similar shops like JapanSelect ask $320 for a sealed CTB copy. I mean, if I were you I'd get 2 copies, sell one for $150 which would be a great deal anyway for your "customer" (just have a look around, I'm not making up those prices) and keep the other copy to you, free of charge ;)

Whoa, I don't know what happened, but the price changed to $44!

Edit: ahem... That is Muchi Muchi Pork for Xbox 360 for $44! Go go go

I'm trying, but I literally can't figure out how to check out.

There's no checkout button visible, but I found a link by digging into the page source... but both it and the shipping estimator says they won't ship it to Maryland.

I think I remember this store from a convention - they bring a huge haul of shmup imports, controllers, limited edition systems and all the rest.

They'll physically come here and set up shop for a weekend... but they won't ship here.

Does it hold an updated revision, or is it just a case of less-printed collectable material?

I can't believe that set is going for so much. It is a rather janky port (visually). But they are two (four with the remixes) excellent games.

Don't forget that it was also printed a third and a fourth time with different disc art in the two Collected Works Cave Boxes.

Yeah that is strange. It's the same game with the same content in an uglier (my opinion) package.

I will be honest, I bought 2 copies with the intent to flip one (not on GAF), which must have been the last of their stock.

Edit: so spoke with them today because the website was acting up. They said it won't be functioning until tomorrow morning because they are updating the site. That $44 is incorrect and the actual price is $69.99. Not sure how many more they have, but I hope you guys can get one.

What does it say in the trailer? It still looks to be an STG of some sorts.

No idea. Some folks in the shmups forums said that it was some allusions to rpg/dating sim elements blended with stg gameplay.

This sexy piece finally showed up today.

No naughty compact flash adapter on this one I see.

I feel bad about not playing more Homura. I loved the work Skonec did on Psyvariar 2 and Shikigami no Shiro III. It sucks they never put out any more shooters either. Gone the way of the cellphone app developer like everyone else it seems. A bummer.

Sucks that former big shooter companies have gone the way of the phablet.

There are still some new blood showing up and there you've got Natsuki, Raiden, and Ubusana on the horizon.
