Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

To actually "fill out" my collection, I need to get into PS1 and Dreamcast importing. It was simple enough with the Saturn by just buying a 4-in-1 cart, but I know next to nothing about other kinds of importing.

Alright, ShmupGAF. I need you to name some shooters to help me fill in my collection. I'll list what I already have for the consoles I'm interested in, so feel free to name that you've either played and enjoyed or have heard are great. Please don't take this as a bragging list thread. I just love shmups and I don't want to miss out on any for fear of asking.

That's a pretty solid Saturn collection. The PSX has a couple of great Raiden releases, Raiden Project (1+2), and a stand alone disc for Raiden DX. For Dreamcast I recommend Psyvariar 2, and Zero Gunner 2 without any caveats. A personal fave is Trigger Heart Exelica, but it may not be for everyone. It is from the makers of Shienryu, so if that floats your boat, give it a look. It's also on XBLA if you're into that.

You should read the last page ;) DC importing is just as easy.

Wait......THIS is all you have to do to play imports for DC?

Choose play game without codes, but dont press accept yet (the button?). Remove the disc, insert import, then press accept on play game without codes.

That's it?!

It's like Sega don't even care

On MOST Dreamcasts you don't even have to go through the trouble of obtaining a printed disc, you can just go ahead and burn a boot disc on a plain old CD-R and it would just work. The printed ones had slightly higher compatibility rates though.

It's like Sega don't even care

That's glorious and wonderful.

Is the most foolproof way to import PS1 games by buying a JP system? All I'm seeing on racketboy are swap tricks on early models, soldering modchips, and other mods like the Breaker Pro.

By the way, thanks for the recommendations so far!

I play all my PS1 imports on my Japanese PS2, didn't want to deal with modding or disc swapping.

Apparently you can rip your library to a hard drive if you have a fat original model PS2 and the network adapter, and that's a way to get around the region lock. I don't know any specifics though.

I'm with _dementia on that one. Playing imports on a PS2 is kinda a hassel. You have to take out a few parts then have the actual swap disc (not a burned copy). It works in a pinch...used my NA slim in Euroland for two years...but definitely go for OG hardware for PS2 if you can.

Swap disc on DC is not nearly as bad though. Identical to the Saturn setup. A split second to boot up and switch the disc but it is no worse than the boot-up with an Action Replay 4-1 (and you don't have to keep that ghetto cart in your system, a BIG plus).

My big pet peeve is disc-swapping, CFW, soft-modding ISOs and stuff like that so ultimately I'm getting a J-DC.

Finally just received my SS Hyper Duel, a bit sick so didn't have much chance to play it, but what I did play, loved. Really makes me miss Technosoft.

Going to try to jump back in tonight after work, quick question: Normal, Saturn Mode seemed a bit easy, should I stick to this or pump up the difficulty?

I got all my consoles modded back when that was still a thing. These days, it probably is easier to just buy Japanese hardware.

I can tell you that this is indeed the case. No details, don't wanna get banned, just Google for it. Just don't go too far down the rabbit hole, OK?

I actually used a hilarious method to boot import games on my model 5501 PS1. It involved swapping discs at three specific times while the motor was actually spinning them up. I used it until the demo disc I used actually shattered in my hands one day. I invested in a parallel port adapter + boot disc after that.

Ripping your own discs is not considered piracy and is not bannable, just to ease any worries.

It's in less of a gray area than 90% of PCSX2 discussion IMO—since I sincerely doubt that most people running PCSX2 actually dumped their own PS2 bios, and technically downloading one is piracy.

I just bought Radiant Silvergun, with the spinecard. I've been thinking about making the plunge for over 10 years. Say what you will about the 360 port, there is no equal to having a real copy to play in your Saturn. SO HYPED.

Congrats. It's not my favorite game, but it's definitely a collectors' staple.
Does the 360 port lack Saturn Mode? Is it just Arcade and Silveruga?

I've never actually played it.

Enjoy! its a fantastic game, and makes the Saturn sing. I personally love it.

I thought I might be able to find a Japanese PS1 console fairly cheap, but that seems to not be the case.

This auction will probably end at a low price, but it includes absolutely nothing but the console itself.

This auction would be $206 total, comes with a lot of games I don't want, and I don't see the cables on the back of the unit.

And this auction includes the console and all accessories except the power cord, which I have no clue where to buy. I looked on the site that he linked in the item description, but I didn't see any cords, and I didn't see any on eBay either.

Can anyone point me to a website or a link where a Japanese PS1 is up for sale? And does anyone know the median price for one now? I thought it would be best for me to go for a foolproof method by getting JP hardware, but I'm beginning to wonder now.

A Japanese PS2 might be more worth it at this point; backwards compatibility is near perfect and PS2s were still rolling out of the factory up until a few months ago. The power cable for both a JP PS1 and PS2 would be the same type you get with a slim PS3.

How much better is the PS1 port of DDP than the Saturn port?
That depends... The Playstation port forces both players to use the same ship in co-op due to memory limitations. The game looks better (especially in YOKO) and it supposedly sounds better, but I have heard from at least a few people that chaining doesn't quite work as it does in the arcade DDP.

Now, I havent played the Playstation version so the scoring thing is hearsay, but the co-op thing would be a deal-breaker for me.

If co-op and arcade accurate scoring are important to you and you are going to be playing in TATE most of the time, you are probably better off sticking with the Saturn version.

A couple years back, we actually had an out-of-country visitor who knew DDP way better than us. Our host had both the PS1 and Saturn ports, and he took both for a spin. Here are the comments he made regarding both vs. the original arcade hardware: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37679

That was a great read. Thanks for the link! I had always wondered about the specifics, but couldn't find a write up.

Conclusion: both ports are garbage. *sets fire to Saturn DDP

...I'm kidding :D

I just found out Bullet Soul is available on Hong Kong games on demand for HK$159.00 ($20.50 USD)

HK on demand link

From what folks say I can go onto my computer, enter xboxlive, change my region to HK, go into the HK marketplace for it, purchase and download and then just flip back.

I have two questions.
  1. Has anyone here done this and does it actually work?
  2. How is this game? It has some pretty constant bullet canceling. Looks like every time someone dies their bullets disappear. Im worried it might be dull because the bullet canceling seems a bit OP.

I just made a Hong Kong gamertag, and used my regular paypal account to buy it. Worked fine. Great price for the game.

Woo! Glad I found this out and spread a shmup here. Could you give me some impressions on this before I pull the trigger? I'm worried that bullet canceling is gonna make it really a cake walk. Im also looking into importing Crimzon Clover from tokyosmups.com

That is unless someone knows of it coming to america in some form soon.

shaowebb > I replied to your comment about the ∀kashicverse. Wallet ready! :P
I can't remember if I ever thanked you for this so I'll do it now. Thank you for the news!
My wallet eagerly awaits good news sir. Also I stumbled upon a year old conversation in the Nyu Media Forums concerning the consideration of Crimzon Clover.
Crimzon Clover was actually one of the first titles we looked as a second slate candidate, but unfortunately it’s already in the works with another publisher (sad face.)
will that come to steam you think?
I really want it.
I don’t know any details of who the publisher is or what they have planned, but I would put the chance of Steam placement at ‘highly likely’.

That is all their ever was to this conversation. The last post was February 1st 2012.

Any idea what ever happened to the mysterious publisher and the fate of Crimzon Clover? Im really eager to see it make it over here someday. If that hits Steam it's gonna be a pretty big hit for a shmup IMO.

There is a dlc mode called ver b that greatly improves the game. Make sure you buy that from the japanese store, I think it is 400ms points. The regular game is OK, but the first loop is too easy and the second too hard. Also, the boss fights are super long and boring. Ver b fixes that, and has a better difficulty curve.

Worst part about the game, for me, is the music. Absolute crap. Sound effects are awful too.

This is true, but here are some some important STG exceptions:

While most such games work fine, others are imperfect, and a few barely work at all thanks to uber-slowdown; the situation may sometimes vary further depending on which specific system revision involved, but here are a couple of documented examples. The most severe cases of the aforementioned slowdown occur with Toaplan Shooting Battle (on Kyukyoku Tiger and Twin Cobra), Gradius Deluxe Pack (on Gradius II) Gradius Gaiden (on Stage 7), and Namco Museum Encore (on Rolling Thunder) – some other shooters, including Night Raid, Strikers 1945 II, and Zanac Neo (on Zanac X Zanac) suffer from some degree of input lag.

SCEJ's official list of incompatibilities. Some are game breaking, some or not.

Great read, thanks! Do Batsugun and Donpachi suffer from similar shortcomings in their Saturn conversions?

At the very least, Saturn and PSX DonPachi will be 4% faster as a baseline than the arcade version, like with DDP. Similarly, Guwange on XBLA is 4% faster on XBLA than the arcade original. Cave 1st gen hardware outputs at 57hz, so the 60hz home consoles will run these games faster.

Actually, it probably would be more worth it since that would open up the whole PS2 library too.

Thanks, honorless, for that response about some games being affected. I'll look into that before I make a decision.

noob question, but what's the difference between hz and fps?

Yeah. These games could have been designed to update everything at framerate-independent time intervals (which would have the sort-of-benefit of being able to run at lower framerates without the game behaving slower), but given that the target hardware was fixed and would always draw everything at the same frequency (which we refer to in hz), it's simpler to just have the main game loop update everything and wait for the display to refresh each iteration. This makes these things dependent on each other, speed-wise.

And that's generally how it is with older Japanese games, since they're mostly all made for fixed platforms. The display frequency the hardware outputs at has a direct relationship to the game's speed.

I wouldn't say it's a noobish question at all. I feel like I'm kind of tripping up over an explanation, lol.

Had my Crimzon Clover question answered on the shmup board. Apparently it was Taito who grabbed them for Nesica system arcade stuff and that version has some cleaner graphics, an extra ship and thats all I know of for sure that was done. I wouldn't be surprised if they added tweaks to levels or more buyable stuff, but if not its still Crimzon Clover and a 3rd ship is awesome. Because its on the Nesica thing from Taito a lot of folks speculate it'd likely come to XBLA easily so fingers crossed.

Also could someone tell me their impressions on Bullet Soul's regular mode now that a few of you got it? If I have to buy another dlc mode just to make it exciting then I'll just spend my cash on a full version of Crimzon Clover.

I might be remembering this wrong, or perhaps it differs from which PS2 model you play on, but I remember the game not working at all on my un-modded JP PS2.

I'm good with the Action replay added start up time, so I guess i'll be ok with disc swapping, unless its extra wear on the DC. At any rate, the disc arrived today, sealed and everything. Now I just need some JP versions to play...focused on Gun Spike atm.

Finally spent some quality time with Ginga Force tonight.

Man...THIS game.

Shopping and playing around with different weapon combos is probably one of the best things anyone has done with the genre. I found myself appreciating the stages more because I would replay them for more cash and put together the perfect weapons/item package to S rank the level.

I think I replayed level 6 (where do fight while flying around a giant ship) at least 10 times until I earned enough money for the level 3 front shield and some better missiles. Then absolutely destroyed that pain in the ass boss.

It didn't strike me at first, but I can easily see Ginga Force in my top 3 shooter on the 360. Such a great game.

LOL. I'm beginning to get pretty decent at Crimzon Clover's demo stages simply because I am so damned cheap I will not buy any credits if I lose. Love the sdtk on this thing. I'll definitely have to pick this up soon.

LOL at the crusader on the shmups board who is harping me for liking steam and hoping it comes there BTW. It'd be friggin' awesome if this hit steam and it'd easily be the best Shmup on their. All the front page ad time it would get alone would be amazing for it.
