Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Ug. Just got the inevitable news that the DC version of Neo XYX has been delayed.

January isn't so bad - hopefully they stick to that.

Dear customers,

we hoped to be able to ship NEO XYX Dreamcast before the winter holidays. But we need to move the release to January.

The new console port features such as portrait mode need more time and our CD printing factory is already at production limit. Even if we would finish today, we would not make it before the Dec. 23th.

We will use the extra time to improve the DC port and add a second portrait screen mode with GPU scaling and a few other new console port options.

This affects the following products:

NEO XYX / ZAIKUSU DC Collector Edition [CE]
NEO XYX / ZAIKUSU DC Limited Edition [LE]
NEO XYX / ZAIKUSU DC Regular Edition [RE]
Newcomer Bundle DC 2013

We will announce the release date in January.

Best regards,
NG : DEV . TEAM

Always good news!

Probably arcade but hopefully some port news as well (not expecting).

Also,

Heads up as the Karous release is fast approaching! I would have hoped they've announced 2DS for japan but, no.

Could not really find much on the new eShop arena shooter so decided to take one for the team.

I don't even know the title of it but it seems pretty extensive. I only finished the first mission but it was enough to figure out the mechanics. It is a free-roaming x, y and z-axis as the a ship or once you locate onto a target you have the option to snap into a mech unit (and locks you into the x-axis) and then it becomes more of a strafing-combo type of deal.

Mechanics seem snappy and it seems there is much to learn about linking and combos between the forms to attack. You also have a pretty liberal dash meter for agility. Standard weapon is a shot and a lock-on. There seems to be a pretty extensive power-up/rpg aspect to the weapons. Has a shop for power-ups. Campaign mode is there from the start with free-mode as an unlockable, whatever that means.

Graphics seem plain-jane so for so hopefully it gets changed up a bit. Lots of voice-work for an eShop game. So far I'm liking it better than the Level-5 game that came out a year or two ago. I'll likely stick with it.

Does anyone know a good website for buying arcade PCB's? I'm specifically looking to get Battle Bakraid, but any suggestions are welcome.

Shmups forum Trading section. Specifically for that board or any other Raizing boards. A Bakraid sold there last month. Lots of users from Europe and NA.

Oh yeah, should have thought of that, cheers for the recommendation!
arcade-otaku
neo-geo.com

you need to have approved posts before being able to see the marketplaces tho. also keep in mind that some will not do business for big items unless you have reputation elsewhere - even at shmups.system11.org. Reputation at one will suffice for all three though.

although they don't have it available, sophia corporation is pretty good to do business with... as is the rest of the vendors listed in this post.
I snagged a Dimahoo board from Sophia that's flawless, and a Progear conversion board from YAJ using rinkya as a proxy that's been pretty baller.

I'm so bummed I didn't have the $375 when that went up. It's definitely up there on my "to get list" which has dwindled down.

Re-Dux Dreamcast has gone gold with january release date according to the last kickstart update. I'll believe it when I see it, but fyi.

Finally got around to ordering Ketsui for PS3! Took me long enough, I know.

Can't wait to get home and tear into it.

I just picked up a PS3 last week to play all the PS3 exclusives I wanted to play and Ketsui is a high priority game for me to get. Wish I could find a US seller selling the regular edition at a reasonable price right now.

I really want that. I opted out of getting an older console (DC, SS, and the PCE are on my list) and for the time being, got a 2DS just now.

With that said I just bought Nano Assault (3DS). I'm expecting awesome.

You (and all other shooter fans with 3DSes) should buy 3D Galaxy Force II as well. An incredible port by M2. The definitive edition I'd say.

Excited for Luftrausers, coming to PS3/Vita iirc, early next year. Flash game is so fun (free) - but so hard as well. They are actually going to give you secondary weapons like bombs in this to deal with those damn subs. Great game mechanics, can't wait.

Recently got R-Type Final, that game showed me why exactly R-Type Leo and Gallop aren't as good as mainline R-Type: The charge shot and especially the Force add so much to the gameplay. Leo's force bits don't come close to the tactical options you get out of a proper Force pod. I mean, a Force is a shield, a throwable weapon, an attack drone and a shot amplifier, it can cover your front or back and switching takes a bit of maneuvering so you better think about where you stick it. Then there's the fact that it stops shooting while you charge your wave cannon. The framerate drops in Final are nuts though, especially considering the fixed camera.

The Force is a much more natural source of complexity than, say, the systems in Hellsinker where you've got enough cryptic gauges to make you feel like you are playing DCS Black Shark. Also large shots and collision boxes make the whole screen more relevant compared to the "squint at a corner of the screen" approach you need in a bullet hell to fit your tiny hitbox exactly between two shots. I prefer the "back to checkpoint" approach on death as well since it means you cannot take the easy route and simply sacrifice a life to get through a tough bit, you have to show that you can handle every part of the game.

The first level of Final is pretty bad though, mostly designed to show off the environment which may work for CoD but not for a game designed to be replayed dozens of times.

The Force is up there with SMW's Yoshi in terms of the most interesting powerups in games.

EDIT: Old post but still:
Came across a YouTube vid of R Type Leo. Best R Type not many people played.

Wish there was a port of it or a enhanced HD remake. Even a ios port would be great!

http://www.desura.com/games/irem-arcade-hits includes R-Type Leo. The pack is on some other services as well but dotemu's website design is crap (is that AJAX-based clientside filtering?)

Eschatos makes me wish more shooters took advantage of common UFO shapes and rumors ( Delta ships, Cigar shapes, Saucers, Mayan pyramids being alien bases, etc.)

That being said, 1CC running is really fun but frustrating at the same time. One stupid / overconfident move and you feel like everything is going to fall apart lol.

Speaking of which, where are the homing lasers coming from in the area boss that takes place over the pyramid? I keep seeing some small targets on the ground, but not sure if those are the launchers.

Resolution's fucked. Get it on PS1 instead.

Is it really bad though / how so? Dont really have a way to play import PS1 games atm.

Probably posted a while ago, but I managed to pick up R-Type Dimensions (RT & RTII) on the Japanese PSN this weekend. Its the same game that is on the 360. Currently there's a demo up which allows you to play the 1st stage of R-Type. R-Type is THE game that got me into shmups, so a purchase was a no brainer for me. All menus are in english and the game is 1,000 yen (about $10). Worth a try if you don't have the 360 version, imo.

edit: Here's some more info on it via Siliconera

this weekend was Galactic Attack, DoDonPachi, Darius Gaiden, Salamander Deluxe Pack & a few i can't remember how they're spelled...man the Saturn is a SHMUP beast. since half this thread belongs to The League of Prestigious Ballers: Hyper Duel club (LoPBHDC), i thought i'd ask: if you were gonna buy one Saturn SHMUP on a scrub budget, which would it be? leaning towards Salamander for nostalgia sake at the moment but none of this batch was weak!

Raiden IV and Caladrius are both coming to PS3. Raiden IV will be PSN only.

Which means both are finally getting region-free releases. :)
Now port Raiden Fighters Aces, too, please.
Heck yeah. Importing Caladrius as I already have Raiden IV.

Irish, Soukyu is great but I don't know if it qualifies as scrub budget. Darius Gaiden was my go-to for cheap Saturn STG rec, but even that's been inflating.

Oh my! Will be buying them again soon then! :)
Really hope we'll start getting some news on PS4 shooters in the coming months.

Also another vote for Soukyugurentai as a budget shooter. Should be able to find it for a bit over €30.
Just be sure that when you use a Action Replay or something like that to get the SegaKore version with the white band around the cover since it doesn't have the text mess-up as the original release. If you play on a Japanese Saturn, both are fine though.

I personally won't be purchasing either cause I own both on 360, but that's awesome news for everyone who haven't been able to play either game.

as far as "cheap" saturn shmups goes, I'm surprised there's no psikyo love for strikers 1945. then again, I'd save my pennies and buy battle garegga asap being that I'm a huge yagawa/raizing fan. still need to get my hands on the PCB o_O
