Shooting at Purdue University

One of my friends was in close building- classes were continuing as normal through the process. Guessing situation might have been contained by the time it became widely known.

Maybe, but Purdue's system is shit.

Texts didn't go out until 10 minutes after it began, and emails didn't go out until thirty minutes later. At least mine didn't. Their system seems pretty slow. A lot of people likely didn't know.

Shit.

Edit: Scarycop phew

I was in class at a different side of campus than EE but I learned more about this situation more from NeoGAF than the school alerting me.

I don't know how I feel about that.

Well, to be honest, in this case there's a need to have the right info coming from the school... anything that's not accurate could cause an even worse situation.

scary pics. Glad things are under control

just texted my friend who goes there. Said they're in lock down and one of his friends was another TA in the room where the shooting went down but made it out okay. Glad he's safe though

So much unconfirmed bullshit going around twitter.
Just want to say, don't take my posts or anyone elses as fact.

Some reports of multiple arrests. One twitter user says this guy was tackled and arrested right in front of him

"the cops rushed in and took this guy down right in front of me at Armstrong! "

Phew, this was over quick. Now for the news media to embarrass themselves...

It's regrettable that the national climate's just right for school shootings to happen regularly, but so many of the variables have added up in a way that's very inconvenient for anyone to fix. Best thoughts for anyone caught in the crossfire!

according to USA Today, "officers conducted a floor-by-floor, room-by-room search of the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering."

Right, but the tweet made it sound like there was another suspect in custody at Armstrong. That pic looks like all police to me, and the USA Today link seems to support that.

I think the cop is holding that one guys backpack and has his arm on him. He doesn't look like a cop to me

Ah, on a second look you may be right. That's a hand, not a shield on his arm.

And turns out Purdue DID tweet to "resume normal operations". I don't think it's quite that simple, personally.

Everyone in EE Bldg continue to shelter in place! All other areas of campus may resume normal op.

I'm surprised Indiana has escaped shooting craze for so long. There is nothing to do here and everyone has guns around here. We've had an uptick in gun violence, but more as homicides and not "public" shootings.

So surreal seeing these places I walked by many times in this context. Grateful that my friends who still go there are alright. Hope everything's sorted out quickly.

This is surreal. I went to Purdue until last year when I transferred to IU, and I used to walk by the EE building on my way to Armstrong every day. I still get the text message alerts from campus.

This question is asked every time it happens. There is no 1 answer.

Its a combination of

- ease of gun access
- mental issues of an excessive amount of people
- the catalysts which result in these mental issues
- lack of help/ neglect
- the declining culture of respecting the people needing help

Add media glorification to this list. Especially for the mass shooters.

Alumni as of spring 2013, what a sad and surreal feeling to see a place I'm so familiar with like this. I originally got one of the purdue student alerts about a shooter in EE, was a somewhat nerve-wracking morning with so many friends and connections at the school.

So a lot of students were pissed that classes weren't cancelled after the shooting. I guess it might've gotten so bad that Purdue cancelled classes around 4pm for the rest of the day as well as tomorrow.

I got an email at exactly 4 cancelling the remainder of the classes for the day and tomorrow. Seemed crazy to me that classes weren't called off immediately. So much misinformation was being spread in the morning that it would have been the safest option.

Yeah, I decided to skip my lab after the shooting. I wasn't about to chance it.

If only they had more guns!

One of my professors a few years ago believes that if everyone had a gun it would prevent these types of things from happening. The logic is that, if someone were to stage a school shooting (or any public shooting) there would be enough people surrounding the gunman, that would have their own gun with them, to stop the shooter either just by the threat alone or by shooting the gunman.

Another reported shooting and another probable day of doing nothing to prevent future incidents.

It's too soon to talk about it.

Can't imagine being at school and getting a 'shelter in place' alert on my phone. Not that we even had mobiles when I went to school. Crazy times to be a teen.

It's so depressing, when I went to dinner I talked to my friend who works there and he said he was friends with the victim, and that he was pissed that everyone was all like "Alright, day off school tomorrow, thanks dude who died." Sad day to be a boilermaker. They closed down the whole street where it took place for hours, and there were like 20 police cars and trucks and a news van or two.

It happens a lot actually. This happened all the time when I was in high school. We always had lockdowns in HS because there would be a report of some guy in the neighborhood with a firearm, that kinda crap.

I get alerts all the time from my university too. There's always someone getting held up, or robbed at gun point on or around the school.

It feels like we've had a dozen of these in the past 12-month period. Has there actually been a recorded uptick in school shootings, or is this just me engaging in confirmation bias or recency bias?

I know I'm at the point where, unfortunately, my first reaction is: "What, another one?"

Love to see that solidarity and support. Honestly teared up a little.

I hate to be that guy, because I seriously don't want anyone to get hurt.
But come on, that many people, in that crowded a space? Isn't that the perfect time for a shooting or terrorist action? Get one guy to be the patsy, then when everyone comes together for the vigil, thats when it goes down.

Someone please tell me that they have insane security checkpoints and stuff around any of these vigils when they pop up

i think you're missing the point of vigils though

Damn, and we had just one more day before it would be long enough after the last one to talk about it without everyone calling it "knee-jerk", "reactionary", "emotional", etc.

Oh well, restart the counter.

Seriously, when everyone dismisses any sort of action called based on shootings with buzzwords it makes me want to pull my hair out. If it's an ongoing problem, you address it, don't weasel your way out of it if you can't think up an actual argument.

Good call. Clearly we should also cancel all sporting events and concerts, et al, indefinitely.

Give me a break, man.
