Should consoles have built-in LCD's in em?

Like in DVD players? It couldn't add that much cost to the systems, and it does come in handy when watching movies on the thing. Hell, they could probably use it for some kinda in-game application, who knows.

Would be nice...but again just something that would be left off the drawing board like 3-10 disc changers and built in hard drives and 4 player support...shit did i just expose Sony's hardware plans?? Damn...

total waste of $$$.

nevermind with wireless (360... others?) adult gamer's boxes will be in an AV closet hidden away.

I think you need it, that way you can tell which games you put in which slot in the 10 disc changer.

Well it's not necessary, but it's probably very cheap to add one to a system...and it can be useful. I mean MS probably spent more money on the 'Ring of Light' thingie. I'd rather have an LCD relay me info (like potential invites, with specific names of ppl) rather than a fucking light.

"Yeah, I don't see it being all that necessary."

Well the way I see it it's not about necessity, take VCRs for example: before they turned into small, displayless and fragile plastic boxes a few years ago, you know when the trend started to have the casette loading at the center of the unit? Before that they were made out of metal, with bigass LCD displays wich were full of info.

I've got an old Mitsubishi with a luxurious display, it's about 1x4 inches, with a green/red VU meter with peaks, separate clocks and time based tape counter, beefy orange channel display and animated casette icon for play/stop/ff/rw, etc. The unit does have some OSD functions, but the bulk of the info is on the unit.

My point is that it looks fucking class, I'd really love for a console to have something like a 4 line x 20 character dot matrix lcd display or something, you could have customisable powerup/down animations, dvd playback info, spectrum analyser for music. In 360's case, in media center streaming it could display network status, what machine you're browsing and what file is playing... You could set it to display live game invites in that display instead of on your TV in the middle of your movie. l33t h4ck3Rz could set it to display internal fan RPM and CPU/GPU temp.

The possibilities are endless, but not because any of that is needed, but because it's the gadget factor, MS preaching customisability, it'd be the erfect gadget to let people have some fun with, just look at how people are using car radio animations, cell phone wallpapers, etc, and because having something is always better than having nothing

Pls give us a video of that

Only Sony and MS can do it, because then it wouldn't be considered a gimmick. :lol

I kid, I kid. Something like the Panasonic Q's display would be very nice for any system.

Well, it would make the console look more industrial. Maybe a lcd monitor packed in too? That would be a revolution :o maybe.

What if the wholesale price to include it is like a dollar or two?
well then in that case i wouldnt mind but i highly doubt that would happen...and i would still like to be able to hook it up to my tv.

You can get the same info on your television which is much larger. And if you have any kind of home stereo why would you want the LCD glaring through the darkness all the freaking time.

He's talking about the kind that are on VCRs and DVD players. You wouldn't be playing the games on it.

"You can get the same info on your television which is much larger. "

That's not the point!! something with a beefy display on it inherently starts to transpire a high level of "Ooooh" and "Aaaaah"

That is why the Ipod Shuffle sucks, that is why the PSP is so sexy, that's why people buy cel phones with high rez OLED screens when all that's really needed is a 7 character monochrome LCD

The idea is also often adapted to other devices, like high end audio amps with windows cut in the face to show the vacuum tubes within, that serves no use right? but it's because people see those and good "Oooooh", or how a Sound system is so much prettier to look at with two needles sweeping over their dials in unison with the music rather than cheaps leds flashing everwhere.

Hell, that why people were all Ooohing and Aaahing over the PS2's blue LED when it came out!

You know what's sexy too? a Sega Genesis CD-X, with the orange-lit LCD over the power button. hmmmmmm.

As a media center device, I'd really love to see a an LCD display so I don't have to turn the TV on just to picks music I'd like to play what's stored on the hdd. Or from a cd I pop in the machine. Surprised it hasn't been done already.
