Should I pick up DOOM3?

I still haven't picked it up yet. Both the game and it's expansion dropped to $15 each. I'm really gonna need a pc game to play in november since Oblivion slipped to december(or so it's listed at eb).

How is the multiplayer? And how is the mod community? Can you download/make your own maps yet?

i thought Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil were both very good, and there's alot of mods for both, sp and mp, i never really played the mp that much

I personally love Doom 3. The environment is amazingly well-realized, it gave me some good scares, and it is, of course, gorgeous. Just don't expect anything too deep in the gameplay department.

I liked it (haven't played the expansion yet). It provided some fun scares and enjoyable demon blasting. You can't go wrong for $15.

Is that a part of the whole game mechanic? I thought it was a really good idea, perhaps people would have preferred it with all the light in the game switched on :)

haha I just would have preferred it in a two handed/helmet light/belt light/holding a flashlight in your teeth/one in your ear fashion.

Games like doom3 make me wish there were PC game rentals. It was good for a first run, but afterwards it just gathered dust. I didn't even finish playing through ROE.

It is a great looking game that plays almost identical to the original Doom. There are some cool little interactive sections and puzzels and things but the gameplay is pretty old fashioned. As well, the physics are not very good and it really isn't all that satisfying laying into an enemy with any of the weapons.

The game's strength is in its mood and scares. There are certainly some jump out of your seat moments as well as some very under your skin sort of events that work really well.

It is pretty much a better rollercoaster ride than an FPS.

Haha, good lord. No. Not at all. Well, it's similar in that there are guns and stuff. And imps, I'll give you, even though they suck now. But the gameplay? The feel? Completely f'ing different. In a bad way, I'd say.

For $15, that's an affordable piece of entertainment right there!

But its true that after playing through once, you don't really care for it anymore.
(So I sold my copy.)

Its fun, but I can see where the complaints come from. There are only so many dark corners / magic closets for monsters to pop out of before it gets tiresome.

Come on, the enemies still weave toward you taking pot shots. The flaming skull things pretty well have the same patterns. The imps still whip fireballs. Enemies don't react very well to fire, etc. Maybe I could have chose my words a bit better when I said identical but the game contains many of the same core elements and not much of an evolution of those elements.

I second this and agree 100%. It's lost the essence and spirit of what the old Dooms were. While it's not a bad game by any means, it doesn't contain the magic of the original.

I want to see a new Doom made that puts the focus back on the gameplay of the original. Now that we have the hardware to do it, it would rock so much.

Nah, I stand by my little outburst. ;) To a seasoned FPS player the two games could not be more different. Can you see the difference between single-player Serious Sam and single-player Quake II? (I'll assume yes.) That's what we're lookin' at here, only even more dramatic since Doom 3 is even slower than Quake II and has even fewer enemies than Quake II.

Doom was all about running around at 90 miles per hour while dozens of braindead cannon fodder swarmed around you. It was thrilling and intense. (Still is.) Doom 3 is more of a leisurely shuffle through a world suffering from a lightbulb shortage with the occasional annoying-to-kill enemy spawning behind you. It's apples and oran... no, Doom 3 isn't even a fruit. Totally different gameplay. Totally.
