Should've Gone Android? Nokia surpasses HTC and Motorola in the USA

Why couldn't they compete? As long as their market share increases (which it is far faster than any other OS) they'll continue to gain support from developers. I don't see how its too late so long as consistent growth continues.

This talking point always cracks me up.

Once my contract is up this Dec, I'm moving from my Galaxy Nexus onto the Lumia 1520. I'll miss the Google ecosystem but the camera is really tempting me.

Because I think that they're going to hit a limit on that growth and continue to be ignored by app developers (I run a company which develops apps and we certainly wont be considering them until they've got significantly more marketshare as it's just not profitable to port right now).

If the poor app selection doesn't halt this growth, then sure, they can compete... but I've lost count of the amount of people who have said to me that they wont buy Windows phones because they don't have X / Y / Z app.

Hell, I'd love to still be on a Windows phone, but I doubt I'll ever go back.

WP now* has Instagram, Vine, BBM, Facebook and Twitter, which are, I believe, the most used apps. Shit's getting better.

Not all of them are available yet, but they are coming in the next weeks.

Damn. I knew Apple and Samsung had a hold of the market but I didn't realise how big a chunk, good to see Nokia picking itself up.

Poor HTC. Their phones were great at the start of Android and still seem to be. What happened? Hell, I'm typing this on my 3.5 year old Incredible.
Their phones weren't great. Their quality issues were brushed under the rug and their terrible design choices were glossed over by reviewers everywhere. HTC released a series of mobile handsets designed to maximize review scores instead of making phones that consumers would like.

No argument, but a pretty good example of where it all falls down is when you go to a particular store / site / service provider and see the oh so common line "Download our app from Google Play / App Store!"

I just saw three examples in the last 10 mins with Strava, Feedly and Papa Johns. There are thousands of them, and even big hitters like McDonalds and Burger King seemingly can't be bothered with WP8 (which is especially sad because porting those particular apps would be trivial).

Incredible is a terrible phone and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Speaking as a former owner of that crappy phone.

We're celebrating fourth place now?

I got the original Evo on launch, and the hardware was amazing back then, but Sense 2.0 is one of the worst things to happen in the history of computing. It's weird to see them lose their way so so badly, but Samsung pretty much just rode Apple's coat tails in terms of design and flooded the market with phones.

I always wonder what proportion of smart phone users are heavy app consumers and would really miss out on WP8. Most of my friends seem happy with a browser, good camera, WhatsApp and facebook. I reckon there's still plenty of room for growth for WP8 even with an anemic app eco system and as that growth continues so will the apps available.

WP8 is getting better but still lack some of the good secondary apps too. Starbucks official app, some of the shopping apps like Hautelook and even Timeplay from Cineplax. Just the every-day sort of apps that people use too. I want themmm !!!

Poor Sony doesn't even get it's own colour

They have like zero presence in the US and it frustrates me. I think they are available only on T-Mobile or something. They need to get their flagship phones out on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, and they need to do it in a timely fashion. Multiple months after Asia and Europe is unacceptable. I don't know what their sales department is up to, but it's a damn shame because the Z1 looks like a fine phone.

Lumia phones are fantastic and WP is a great OS, but I won't come back until their app ecosystem can compete with iOS/Android. I just don't want to miss tons of apps and games.

I also didn't know Xperia was so insignificant, lol. I love my Xperia P and Xperia SP.

That's crap.

You always mention a speaker grill popping off if dropped, yet the screen didn't crack like on the gs4. Much easier to glue on a speaker grill for 50c, rather than spend $300 replacing a screen.

The HTC One is still one of the best phones on the market, only now being beaten in most areas by the LG G2.

All in 1 finance app. Basically you sign in on all your financial institution's accounts and it manages it for you with how much you earn, spend, tendencies, what exactly you spend on, etc. Very in depth and detailed.
Ah ok. It's US only it would seem, which would explain why i've not heard of it.

Why would you need that on your phone?

I want to go back to a Windows Phone again (had a HTC Trophy) but it would first need Snapchat, Vine, and Instagram available (non of that "in the coming weeks" BS that they keep saying). Until then, I'll stick with my Note 2.

If you compare the specs of the S4 and the HTC one it's pretty obvious S4 is the winner. Unless built in FM radio is a must have for you. Built quality arguments are all in your head and pointless, I have owned 2 Galaxy Notes (1 and 2) and never had any issues with them. Simple solution to any built quality concerns is to treat your phone with more care and not expect miracles when you repeatedly abuse them.

But they are coming, and even if not 6sec and 6tag are better than the officials by a longshot with functions not available in those. I have an iPad and a HTC One X and yet all of my Instagram photos are uploaded from my Lumia 920.

Had they gone Android my next phone wouldn't be a 520.
You guys are forgetting that the market share fain is mostly because of 520.

And for people saying that the cheap phone is running os smoothly well 2 things. Its a dual core krait which was like last year flagship processor.
2ndly i am using it and 820. Phone runns a single app great but when you re switching between apps it takes a lot of time even without true multitasking

I'll take the one that's smoother in performance which is much more important.

Yea "they are coming" is all I hear. I would need them now though because that's really what I use my phone for (don't have a tablet). Snapchat is the most used app I use out of the ones I mentioned. The unofficial one for that got taken down by Snapchat. Once I see all those apps in the App Store, then I will gladly pick up a Windows Phone.

But they really are coming. Rudy Huyn, the guy who made 6tag and 6sec is making a Snapchat client that's supposedly better than the Android one, since it has iOS-specific functions. It should be releasing soon, so there's that.

they take sooooo long to come out with a new phone. I knew there was stuff coming up but I needed a phone in october, had to get the note 3 instead of the 1520. I love my note 3 but if the lunima refresh came out earlier I would have def got that instead

A. Caveat - I work at MS.
b. Nokia apps are amazing and their software output is stunning
c. Try win 8 phone before complaining about it
d. Nokia hardware is rad

I have an 8x, and the Nokia drive stuff is great, but MS really needs to step it up for apps. It's really the only thing people can hold up as a giant flaw right now. Having Nokia put the effort for getting exclusive apps on the OS is lame for everyone else. I guess MS doesn't care since most people go for the lumias anyways.

i dont really like trusting non official apps with my logon info for stuff like drop box, there's no yahoo fantasy app, and even some official apps like eBay are worse on WP than ios or android.

The handsets/cellphone division is losing money and is bought by Microsoft for a low amount of money = I still think they should have gone Android.
