SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

I don't have my headphones hooked up, but does your town have a (fake) Twitter account? It looks like somebody was complaining about the lack of greenery (with hashtags and all). That's an interesting way to get feedback on the quality of your city.

I just pre-ordered this. Even if it's only half as good as the videos make it look, it's still worth the $24 I paid for it.

Individual citizens in your city have Twitter accounts, yes. I'm actually kind of looking forward to that feature, it seems like a neat way to get feedback on your city if done well.

Gonna stay cautious though. One thing SimCity 2013 nailed was making the city lively with the day and night cycle and the rush hour, where u could see a stark contrast between the busy working times and the other part of the day where your city looks more peaceful. It looks like this game has neither of those, althought they did say they will implement it later? Also the randomly spawning cars and a kinda lack of variety of the buildings are things I hope they are gonna improve on. Don't wanna hype myself up too much, if it turns out to be a disappointment, since they are a small team.

How can people be making all that stuff already if the game isn't available yet?

Beta testers or early access to certain communities perhaps.

(edit) - shit, there's crematoriums and cemeteries.

Must be the dead center of town....everyone's dying to get in....[/dadjokes]

Nice! Just got done pre-ordering. If this is similar to Sim City 4 but with updated graphics, then I'll be content. Well, anything after SimCity 2013 is an improvement really.

EDIT : OMFG, this game is 64-bit, I'm going to abuse my i7-3770k @ 4.7 GHz processor and 16GB RAM with this game.

Damn I love GMG.

Pre-ordered for $24! I don't know how it's economically possible for Paradox to offer it at this price, and then for GMG to offer a sizeable discount on top of that, but whatever. Makes me a happy camper. :)

I'd say having a small team make this game is what contributed to the low price.

Yeah it's a twitter feed from your citizens it's pretty genius and such a cool little detail.

Ice burn to Maxis/EA xD

All this talk got me interested in a city builder again, so I pre ordered it. Also, you can never have to much of this kind of "Zen games" in you library for the time you just want to relax. Waiting for the first people to complain, that the 1 million citizens cap is to small.

I blame the upper management mostly as well. I remember a promo video a long time ago where Ocean Quigley was talking about the meeting he had with Maxis general manager Lucy Bradshaw, and that one of the requirements for her greenlighting SimCity2013 was "no spreadsheets", i.e. getting rid of the more technical simulation aspects of the previous titles.

Dumb move, obviously.

Whoever else was responsible for always online, single core, too many agents, lack of simulation, and the various other bad design decisions led us to the product we have now.

There are flashes of brilliance in SimCity 2013, and I've played it a helluva lot, but the overall package is lacking, and it's a damn shame.

Megatowers didn't increase the actual map size.

Yes, they did. They just did it vertically :P

Look at my post above it shows the sizes of cities skylines it's bigger then Simcity 4.

I meant bigger than the "max size" SC 2013 city. Probably should have made that clearer.

I'm quite interested in this game but I don't know if I can run it. My GPU doesn't meet requirements, but that hasn't in many cases disabled me from playing games anyway, so perhaps with a lot of tweaking I can get this game running too. I can see beta testing is going on, I hope there will be a demo available as well.

Game looks incredible, it's a shame that there is a lot of confusion about the title. I'll definitely be picking this up come march. the potential for easy moddability through steam workshop is a great thing. I loved custom buildings in SimCity 4 but it often involved a whole process to get working. As I grow older I don't want to spend hours fiddling with directories and such, I prefer simpler solutions.

Is this related to the CitiesXL franchise? Because i remember that having technical problems (memory leak, IIRC) that were never really fixed.

Cities: Skylines – Dev Diary 10: Themes
CLICKY

Cities: Skylines features three distinct terrain themes. These include north, sunny and tropic themes. Gameplay-wise the themes do not differ from each other, the effects are purely visual.
This way the player can create their favorite maps using any of the themes available.

How did this became my most hyped game I don't know!

ed: Also we will see something today!

Arumba's embargo gets lifted 17th of Feb@1500 CET. via reddit (T-0233h)

I'm really impressed how this is looking! This really seems to be the real Sim City 4 sequel we've been waiting for.

I don't understand how some people can say 'Simcity was a disappointment. Preordering this!'

Why not wait a couple weeks and see if it's not a piece of crap?

As many of you have seen Arumba recently mentioned his (and the other guests) embargo for the game stops February 17th. This information is correct. What is important to note is that this embargo is from stuff that happened during PDXCON, meaning gameplay recorded and interviews had are from there. He, and other YouTubers, do not have access to the game "from home" yet. This will happen closer to launch.
Should be good

Cities XL had always-on DRM too didn't it? I remember having to log into some bullshit server the one time I ever tried to play a single player game of it, and then uninstalled.

This game has nothing to do with Cities XL, it's a different developer and different series.

I've actually been playing EA's SimCity a bit recently.

While EA's game has very obvious, very silly limitations and quirks, I think the fact that Cities XXL and Skylines are far worse. Their UX design is atrocious, the menus look like someone from the Amiga era designed them and overall, the experience suffers.

Only the most hardcore fans will keep with Cities XXL long enough to figure out how to do stuff in there. Frankly, it's just a mess.
Have you actually played Skylines? How are you judging for a fact that it's worse?

Because its a very good price as is and can be gotten even cheaper by pre-ordering?

Aah, I messed up bad. I thought this game was developed by the same guys who made Cities XXL. But it isn't.

Cities in Motion was serviceable, but nothing groundbreaking. I don't know how this will end up.

Cities: Skylines developers have released a FAQ earlier today in regards to their game,

Answering questions from map sizes to rush hour traffic to modding.

Good to see this: The EULA on the Steam page had a lot of language about the game requiring an account. Guess that was just standard EULA language and didn't mean anything specific to the game.

Does Cities: Skylines require an online connection?
The only online requirement is a one-time activation through Steam. After that, the game requires no connection.

That name will bite them in the ass :(
Seeing people getting confused and such.

It's mind-boggling to me that they would not only choose a name already associated with another game, but they would do so with another game in the exact same genre which isn't at all well-regarded.

It would be like someone coming out with a multiplayer FPS and calling it Homefront Skylines.

I can see where the name comes from (their previous games were Cities in Motion), but it is a pretty poor name that just causes a lot of brand confusion. Too late to change it though.

Call it Skylines In Motion.

Boom, done. That one's a freebie, Paradox.

I've been watching a ~45 minute developer walkthrough of the game and it really sounds like they looked at the new Simcity and figured they could do that but everything better. Sounds really good, I hope this turns out well!

(The video is in Finnish and for some reason it's mostly showing the people talking with off screen gameplay so no point posting it here I guess)

Huh, I wonder what's up with that Youtube channel. Is it an official Cities Skylines channel or just a fansite? A Polish Youtube channel uploading the video from a Finnish gaming site sounds a bit fishy :)

Here's a link to the actual site's channel so you can give them a view instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXZKAvX0gRk

Cool to see someone translated it.

Yeah,

I saw that link popping up on reddit (when hype, reddit lurking goes in full throttle), so I've got the link from there.
Changing the link to that of orig. finnish one :)
