SimCity a disaster for you? Take a look at Cities: Skylines (not related to CitiesXL)

Really, really glad someone's willing to compete directly with EA over this genre. Last Simcity left such a sour taste in my mouth.

Anyone know if there's been any mention of toll booths? Always found them useful in Simcity 4 to help with traffic, force people to use public transport and bring in some extra money.

You can do some messed up revenue-generating tricks with toll booths in SC4. I always loved playing with them and seeing how deviously I could place them.

Doesn't look like it, but it's something that should be easily modded in some form or another.

I haven't played a city builder in years so I'll try it out for $24. Looks pretty cool.

Edit: I've never used Green Man Gaming but am I able to load this through Steam after I download it?

Are we sure the guy doing these videos is not John Oliver in desguise?

Because holy shit, every time I hear his voice I imagine Oliver talking, even has some of the mannerisms and expressions while talking.

What's the VIP thing?

Sinceresly, i dont even know, someone put the link to that portion of the gmg website and I entered it throught that.

EDIT Seems someone already gave you the link.

Do any of these city builders do weather? Not just SimCity-style tornado disasters. I've love to build a city, see it get buried under two feet of snow, and watch my city roads department plow the streets.

Haven't watched this video yet so I'm not sure if he mentions the following anecdote in it, but I was chatting to Quill himself over the weekend at a bar and he was talking about how, at the PDXCON event, he and all the other attendees were going about the typical schedule of sit downs and presentations and, when it came time for lunchbreak, he thought he'd be sneaky and scurry back to the CitiesSkylines room to play some more. He was utterly impressed by what was shown earlier that morning and, out of all the games he might have grabbed some extra time with, it was Cities that he was pining for. So, he gets to the room and, lo and behold, practically every other attendee had had the same idea and he finds the room crammed with people who were supposed to be enjoying lunch.

He seemed really, really excited about the game and, as he described it, he wasn't alone in that. Expecting lots of positive early impressions for this one.

The impressions are great. I hope the game does well, and CO to not drop the ball on post-launch support. The CiM games did not have much in terms of free content, though they did release a lot of DLC.

Selfishly, I'd love to see this become Steam's preeminent city simulator. It looks terribly dry but the Workshop communities for the successful Paradox games are really wonderful and could provide this with all of the flavor it needs.

Game really looks good. If it has the depth on the old Sim City games I could see myself purchasing it down the line.

I still feel the sting of 70€ for Sim City 5 :/

These are the kinds of impressions I like to hear. So glad a skipped Sim City.

Really excited about this game. Bought the big version on Steam even though the upgrade rewards were pitiful. This genre is painfully underrepresented right now, so I am happy to pitch in, and the Simcity (2013) fiasco was a slap in the face (which I thankfully knew enough to avoid).

What is the current status of Sim City? Does it still have a large active user base? Are they releasing new content?

This game seems like a pretty blatant rip off of the new Sim City, not that that is a bad thing.

My hope is that Sim City has a dead community, forcing EA to fix their mistakes in the inevitable future sequel.

When the "rip off" product is turning out to be better, it isn't a rip off. I am happy to have Cities: Skylines overthrow Sim City and for this team to get a ridiculous amount of success to push their more sensible product higher and higher.

I dont expect it to be perfect of course, but It doesn't have to be. Sim City felt like Comcast-- no alternative to go to, so all people could do was deal with it. It's great to see competition, though this really just looks like an all around more honest game to invest in.

Whoever is making the OT: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Mention that it's not Cities XXL

Game seems too good to be true. I did enjoy Cities in Motion though.

Think I'll wait for performance analysis of large cities before I decide to buy.

There really needs to be some way to easily let people know that this game is not XXL.

I dunno how many people still play SimCity, but there hasn't been any official content in a while. The last patch didn't add any content; it only allowed you to transfer your online games to offline.

Modders have released some interesting things, but even that content has slowed down a lot.

Well, this thread finally convinced me (along with the GMG discount). I preordered the game. Looking forward to sinking some major hours into it.

Wow, this looks very interesting. Added to my Steam wish list for now, I'm eager to see impressions when it's out.

And thanks to OP for putting the bit about CitiesXL in the title, I had totally assumed this was a sequel or expansion to CitiesXL and had been ignoring threads about it as a result.

So one cool thing Quill18 mentioned was, that you are not bound by the nine city areas with 2 km x 2 km each, which would be 36 km² already, but that you can mod the restrictions out so that you can build the whole area if you want (and your computer can handle it). Mod support seems be great in general as you can offer buildings, parks and statues of yourself for other to put into their games via mods.

Also mentioned was, that there are no tunnels buildable at launch, but will be added to a latter that as a free patch/dlc.

what about mass transit? does that (tunnels) include subways?

What types of transit and public transportation networks are in the game?
Cities: Skylines will launch with the following types of transit:
- Pedestrian paths
- Gravel roads
- 2, 4, and 6 lane roads
- One-way road variants
- Highways and on/off ramps
- Train
- Metro
- Airplane
- Ship
- Bus

Colossal Order plans to implement more types of transit in the future.

Metro
Metro is an efficient transport mode to move a lot of people fast. However, its downside is the high building cost since the player needs to build both the metro entrances (stations) as well as the underground tracks. Underground track building is done in a special view mode where the tracks and stations are highlighted. This mode also highlights the other public transport buildings, tracks and routes which makes planning of the network easier.

The game is looking solid, and with the modding that's expected, it should be even better.

Hopefully it is successful and will give developers a chance to make a sequel, but with a slight name adjustment..
