Is this officially the worst game launch of all time?

It ranks pretty up there. Diablo III got off to a rocky start but even with the initial server problems it was a lot more playable than Simcity was. And Diablo III improved drastically very quickly, while Simcity continues to be less than what it was supposed to be. Key features are still disabled as of today, over a week after launch.

The only game I can personally remember being this dissapointed in at launch was Master of Orion III. That was the last game I bought blind on faith alone, ever since that debacle I've waited to read both journalist reviews and player reviews before buying a game, Blizzard games being an exception for me though.

Ben Parfitt is the guy from MCV UK who wrote a glorified press release that Hitman: Absolution had perfect scores except for "grumpy" Eurogamer's 7/10 (while ignoring all of the other sub-8 reviews) and got called out for it by John Walker. His site was the one involved in all the Tomb Raider preview controversy and the one that produced the editorial that DmC was a perfect game and fans only didn't buy it out of petty spite, a view which Parfitt endorsed in a sales article explaining that everyone hated DMC4 and realized that it needed a reboot.


He's practically the living embodiment of why the Giant Bomb guys have such a low opinion of European journalists.

I gave EA the benefit of the doubt with the "offload parts of the simulation to the server" thing. It sounded fishy, but at least possible.

It also didn't make sense to me that they'd tell such a colossal lie that could be so easily revealed to be one.

Now that it's been exposed to be a colossal lie, hopefully EA will do the right thing: patch it, and fire everyone involved in this PR nightmare.

Artistically, all of this does spell out a pretty sorry story: the demise of a pure single player experience that can be enjoyed alone and without any technical interruptions. The opposite of that – an always-watched digital game, where your every move is logged and tracked, sounds worrying.

But didn't all gamers give up the argument to an unconnected, uninterrupted experience the minute the first Xbox achievement was unlocked? At that moment, playing a game, even one with a story and just one character to control in the early days of Xbox 360 – which seems like so long ago now - went from being a closeted, quiet thing, to something broadcast and shared with others.


He defends always-online because it is a way to track player metrics and behaviors, even though it's patently obvious you can do that without making an internet connection a REQUIREMENT.

Last weekend's SimCity launch proved to be a trial by fire for EA – but I can only see this situation as one the publishing giant has won.
The only 'problem' that SimCity represents for EA is that it has been a steep learning curve.

EmCee, I was about to post that exact same quote. I even bothered to read about 30% of that drivel, scanning it over.

He makes me embarrassed to be a gamer. He is literally enabling and promoting bad behavior. How can one justify such injustice?
 
No, mate. D3 hugely benefited from Blizzard fanbase/D2 fanbase (which are FAR larger than SimCity) and initial sale proves it, but that's about it.

They were awful at handling PR and game no longer has the amount of fan it once commanded. If D4 comes out I don't think people will buy it like they did with D3.
Yes they will the world in terms of better internet connectivity will be different years down the line. Also people went to D3 in droves.
Even if Maxis released an offline update in the next five minutes, Gies would still continue parroting that same line from Diablo III's pre-release, that it's an inherently multiplayer game and playing it single-player is completely different and not the same thing.

(also there are apparently "lots of games" like SimCity if the new one isn't "for you," which would ostensibly include uh, Tropico, Cities XL, and uh)
Gies live-streamed his play-through of D3.... although he tested a second play-though with co-op i think. Also that game got DDOS attacks correct?
