SimCity |OT| It's not the simulation or city that matter, it's <parameter: string>

Just reposting. I have a region up on US EAST 1 with 15 slots. Just add me (ArecP) and I'll send you and invite.

Edit: Is anyone having an issue with friends not showing up? I'm trying to invite people but I don't see them as online for me to invite them.

I am sad to report that Neo Neo Gaf Town went bust after oil reserves were depleted and the nuclear plant melted down

I wish they had a start over option =/

uh, I accidentally clicked the "build the international airport" great work.

Any chance to tell it "not to"?

They should rename this game Gridlock City. I have bus depots and massive streetcar support but the fucking bastards won't use them, costs me a fortune in upkeep and doesn't fix the traffic pile up, so what was the point? From there on it's just the butterfly effect, police can't catch criminals, fire brigade don't reach fires in time, ambulances don't reach patients etc.

Now I would of been able to support the city on the back of my oil tycoon like drilling, but the Petroleum HQ doesn't even work properly because it most likely has region support turned off on the server. So my oil goes nowhere and I have 2 trade depots full of crude oil. So frustrating.

I'm trying to get more shoppers along my avenues. Is it a good idea to plop schools and universities on the far end with shops in between, or do the cars just go straight to the destination? Does the SC4 formula (shops along heavy traffic = profit) work here?

I've seen lots of individual students walk out from the university on foot to go shopping or whatever.

Looks like I was the only one left in a Gaf region so I bizzounced. If anyone needs someone to play in a NA server, please let me know!

So I can't play past 10 minutes or so in my city anymore. Everytime I do it says it needs to rollback. Does this ever get fixed? I've been trying all night and the same shit happens.

How do you send resources to a Great Work?

For example I started Arcology and it says Phase 1 of 2. I turn "on" the button for sending Metal.

I make Metal in my city from Recycling Center. I've had my city running a while since both of those things, but it still says 0 tons of Metal for Arcology site?

Pardon me if someone already posted this, though this video helped me understand how the roads and intersections work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-8lhpINmXE

I noticed a big improvement in a new city where I connected the highway offramp to a longer avenue which was intersected largely by medium density and lower streets. All in all, I only had 3 intersections with street lights off of that avenue, one being a second avenue that cut across. This showed a remarkable improvement compared to my earlier cities that had high density intersections with street lights all over the place, forcing frequent bottlenecks and stopping tourists and delivery trucks from coming in.

So helpful. There is a massive improvement in traffic flow between road layouts that have lights or 4-way-stops at all of the many intersections, and road layouts where the most trafficked avenues have right of way and the cars move along quickly with no stops, and the number of intersections is minimized.

It's a shame the game itself doesn't explain any of that!

This video is also helpful and covers a few more things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cR7wJDAWD9s

I've started a new experimental city. I thought this plot would be perfect for my circular utopia! I've made the rings and main arteries out of avenues so I can run streetcars all around my city when it gets big enough.

To fix the traffic, it would be better to have it completely randomized which intersection to take. It would be better than what we have now...

Well now I get why people want to turn off disasters. Had a couple of earthquakes and the giant lizard annihilate my region a few times -- recycling plants, trade ports, processor factories, university, large fire and police stations all victims. It does hurt the wallet and is painful to watch, I swear the game purposely targets these areas :(

As mentioned many times, the pathfinding for this game is horrible. My recycling trucks will do circles and then head back with nothing :\

I don't think this game is going to hold my attention for much longer with these city sizes :|

Stuff is hard once i pass the 150k citizens im having trouble finding a positive income from taxes. Learned the hard way specialize early. Only dont know what is the easiest to specialize in and takes the least amount of area.

I thought lets try casinos so i plopped one down it was running negative 1.3k for like 6 hours.
Then destroyed it. Gonna try trading today instead of industry dont like the fact it has so much ground polution.

Also discovered yesterday that big sewage building and water pump in the same area is a excellent combo. The big sewage building keeps making the water in the ground rise, which the water pump building can pomp up again.

I had this problem that water pump would run dry and then had to find new areas to put one down and saw that the area by the sewage building the water in ground was really high so i tested it and they do increase groundwater levels. This is probably already known or isn't it.

My circular city is progressing. When I started the map I built a very quick and dirty 8,000 population city off to the side and raised 200,000 simoleons quickly then demolished the city and built my avenues. Seemed to work. The city is still making a profit.

It looks like something I'd like to try, but I have a feeling you'll have a traffic nightmare later on with the avenues intersecting each other.

What's the secret behind increasing density? Is it just something that happens over time or is it entirely dependant on the local surroundings and wealth? I'd like to increase the density of a mid-wealth residential and commercial area I'm working on without bumping it up to high wealth.

I have some mixed impressions on Sim City in general, but one thing I will say is that since playing it for the first time last night, I've come to work today and all I can think about is the changes and tweaks I want to make to my City. I've been planning, bulldozing, re-planning and building in my head all morning. That feeling might not last, but in terms of my initial impressions of Sim City it's job done as far as that goes.

You need to increase happiness. If you want to increase density of low wealth citizens, plant down the low wealth parks because if you put down higher wealth parks then they'll convert to medium/high wealth citizens.

Agreed on the game overall, been playing basicially every day since UK launch for a few hours each day

I found park and ride the best way to get the buses utilised

They should really improve game finding if there are no empty cities please stop showing them in join game list. Or is this just disabled for the moment?

It's completely moronic of them not to add a "don't show full regions"-filter. It's just stupid.

My game keeps saying "no access to region connect roads to highway" but they are... any ideas?

When I first started out, I was stumped a this a bit, too. Then I realized I need to un-pause my game for it to update. I don't know if that applies to you :)

I'm having more fun making my suburbs first on the outskirts and then trying to expand inward to medium sized buildings and concluding with larger/denser populations in a central location. Each time I try a new city, I learn new ways to keep up with the game. The RCI graph is useless. You really have to look at the population/jobs chart to fill demand correctly.
Also, to get good traffic in my suburbs, I de-zoned my residential and commercial after I liked the low density houses that were built, and upgraded the roads to high density. The houses and commercial will stay low density and have much smoother traffic.

Anyone having any issues inviting someone to a region, and that individual unable to claim a city? Ran into that one a few times, haven't seen anything on it yet.

I think my region has just completely desynced from the server after it forced a rollback. Still not saying the international airport is complete, despite every other region acknowledging it is.

Maz, your city looks stunning. I'm going to assume you planted those trees? It makes the city look so much more natural and organic. Nicely done.

Are you using one of the graphic filters? Your shots have got a really nice natural look to them!

Thanks! Yes, I plant trees as much as possible for mostly aesthetic reasons. Plus they look awesome in the fall when they change color.

Yes, I use the "warmer' filter because, as you said, it looks the most natural.

So I want to play this game offline, I have no problem buying it from EA via Origin but I really want to play it offline. I couldn't give a fuck about online features or cloud whatevers, is there any way legal or otherwise to play offline yet?

Nope. Not yet. They still haven't figured out all the regional interactions yet which are most definitely handled on EA's backend. Until they can excise those dependencies from the core game or emulate it via a server emulator, offline play is but a fevered dream.
