SimCity |OT| It's not the simulation or city that matter, it's <parameter: string>

MadD4mon has assembled this timeline of all the events that occurred following SimCity's release. I've added it to the main OT and it will be continually updated as more news comes in. Thanks MadD4mon for making this!

Worth reposting if anyone missed it at the end of the last page. Very good collection of everything that happened post-launch.

Sure

This is the shortest route when it comes to an avenue. This'll lead to massive congestion.

So the U-turn part is why zoning on avenues sucks; but doesn't the same thing happen with streets? I've seen sims turn left onto a street from a building, but I don't think I've seen sims turn left from a street into a building.

Also, is it just me or is trying to plop a municipal airport really finicky? I can't find anywhere where I can plop one, even in flat terrain; I can't tell if it's the terrain or if I'm not placing next to a road correctly.

So you are saying the game is bad because what you think is perfect, really isn't? I mean, you keep saying you built "the perfect city", and then are complaining that that city isn't acting like it is perfect...maybe, you know, it isn't the perfect city. And of course if you build everything while it is paused and then unpause it, it's going to take a while for anything to happen - the game isn't designed for that to work. Utilities won't open until they have workers, which takes time to hire. It's designed for you to build the city as time is running. Cities don't spring into being from nothing, fully formed.

Installing the game right from the account of one of my friends to see if my computer can run it. This update takes forever, haha.

What's the cheapest place to get this game at the moment? GMG seems kinda expensive at €51.

Ok, since my GAF-region on NA West 4 ended up being on a full server, I am starting a new GAF-region on Antarctica. I'll check in on those of you that wanted to join the NA West 4 server, but couldn't due to it being full. That still leaves a good amount of spots.

If you want to join, just let me know.

I've been looking for a region to join! Origin ID: Dougald

Even though there are about 850 other things broken with this game, I hope they at least patch the traffic issues soon. I'm gonna hold off building anymore until then.

Got my first alien invasion in the GAF region.

Thank god, that bug drove me mad, my city has pollution all over now. And after solving that, regular trash doesn't seem to get picked up. I've already rebuilt my landfill, but still no trucks go around collecting garbage. The only regular garbage being collected is being done by one truck sent by another guy in the region (thank god for that), but in a city of 150k or something that's not really enough.

The bug occurs when your recyclable capacity is maxed out, so the other solution besides demolishing and rebuilding, is to make sure that your recycling centers never top off. As long as there is one center that isn't maxed out, you shouldn't encounter the bug.

As for your garbage trucks, you may have encountered the other bug where if you demolish a stretch of road that contains a service vehicle, that service vehicle has a chance of being permanently deleted. The only solution is to build more vehicles over the number of which you previously had.

Yeah, I googled the recycling bug which is how I managed to solve it. And that sucks, I'll wait for the patch on that one and ask someone in the region to send more garbage trucks given that I had maxed out garbage trucks before. I'll just pay them or something.

Hah, that looks so cool, how is the traffic situation for you? Surely not always as quiet as on those shots no?
Oh, and I don't recognize that building next to your windmills, what is it?

I got the game yesterday and apparently I'm really bad at it, haha. I could use some Origin friends though, so if anyone wants to add me I think my Origin ID is KapiteinGertJan.

May be a little unrelated, but when are we supposed to choose our ''free'' game due to the disastrous release of SimCity.

Its for all registered SimCity copies or launch/pre-order ones?

Nice looking city, but the city size is such a downer.

It wouldnt be such a problem most of the time if required buildings werent so big. 3 service buildings, 3 mayor buildings, 3 schools thats already ton of space 'wasted'.

But yeah, we need regions with bigger spaces, even if that comes up with population limit [600k or smth like that]

Yeah, the space wouldn't be nearly as bad if the service and specialization buildings weren't as massive as they are, especially after expansions have been added. Even if they weren't so big though, city sizes are still way too small.

Thanks for the timeline. Two weeks have passed and there has been so much news for this game. Shame about the 20 minute timeout for offline mode. That's no offline mode...

I particularly like the fact the game isn't even pulling any sort of information from the server regarding stats.

Waiting for City to load and apparently the global population of SimCity is 0, with 0 cities founded.

Cheers for that update.

This is the exact thing I mentioned to my friends. The service buildings and buildings you place take up so much room that it makes an already small city size seem smaller.

Plus there needs to be better indication of how big expansions on these buildings are going to be other than trial and error and guesswork. Also terraformed a bit for these expansions.

I actually ran into an odd situation placing a recycling center. I didn't want the included plastics module so I bulldozed that. But in doing so apparently the space became too small to add another module in it's place so the whole thing became worthless.

I guess you are supposed to be sharing those across cities, it's just the system is broke. I tried to make a city that was buying all its power but when I capped out the power station the upgrade didn't register and half my city didn't have power.

Well after 27 hours, I'm not really sure where the long term game is with SimCity.

So far I've been building cities, watching them grow and trying to get them profitable. And that's it. Move on. I've just "finished" my current City. I've done just about everything I set out to achieve with it, filled all the space and the City is in the green hour to hour. There isn't any particular specialisation I want or have the space to do with it, and other than watching the density of my existing zones grow, there's no other expansion I need to be doing. So what now? What's the long term hook exactly to stick with this City?

This feels like a bit of a problem to me. At 27 hours played for £19 I'm pretty happy I bought the game, and I could stop playing right now and be satisfied with my time investment, but I don't really want to stop playing yet. I'm enjoying the game enough, warts and all, that I don't just want to drop it. And at the same time, I don't just want to get trapped in this cycle where I build a City, max out the plot space, keep it profitable, move on.

No idea if this is legit, but someone on reddit supposedly c&p'd a blog post that has since disappeared with the free game info:

Here you go: http://www.simcity.com/en_US/blog/a...amazing-mayors-a-free-pc-download-from-origin

Here is the list of games that you will be able to choose from once you are able to redeem. It’s a great list of games across the whole EA portfolio, so pick one and add it to your Origin library on us!

Battlefield 3 (Standard Edition)
Bejeweled 3
Dead Space 3 (Standard Edition)
Mass Effect 3 (Standard Edition)
Medal of Honor Warfighter (Standard Edition
Need For Speed Most Wanted (Standard Edition)
Plants vs. Zombies
SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition

I'm personally torn between Battlefield 3 and SimCity 4 (I had the game but lost the CD).
Hopefully we'll get something official soon.

It is a legitimate list.

http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/9378384.page

It's in between decent and horrible. For me it's a pretty good selection because I don't own DS3 and that's still pretty fresh.

If you're below age the choices are horrible - I can't believe Sims isn't included somewhere in the list. Some of the choices are kind of insulting - Plants vs Zombies in particular - amazing game but it was given out for free at Halloween, and generally costs less than $5. Battlefield 3 is sold frequently at $10-12, and this version could have easily included premium. MOH is a flop and they will struggle to give that away for free.

The text accompanying the free list is pretty insulting because it still fails to acknowledge that things are completely broken with the game. I don't care at all about the server issues, but the fact that the game is entirely broken is ridiculous.

"We’re getting great feedback from our fans and know that many of you are having fun and exploring this whole new expression of SimCity. We’re humbled by your patience and passion for the game. Thanks for building something very special with us, together. "

Actually, it's more like "We see you understand our game is unfinished, and that the only system that works in our game is residential housing [if you don't mind that no one lives at the same house two days in a row (which doesn't' really bug me)]. We see you, and both game and professional journalists are having fun exploring all of the broken systems within our game.

The last sentence just kills me "Thanks for building something very special with us, together".

Just came to post that I also got the email a few minutes ago. I'll be grabbing NFS: Most Wanted.

Our SimCity Mayors are incredibly important to the team at Maxis. We sincerely apologize for the difficulties at launch and hope to make it up to you with a free PC game download from Origin.
Starting today, every player that has activated their copy of SimCity will receive an email that will give directions on how to redeem this offer, and you can also find more information on our FAQ. We’ll be opening up the redemption portal country-by-country so some of you may see it a little sooner than others. The portal will be live worldwide for everyone to select their game by March 22. We don’t want any of you to miss out on your free game, so please note that you must register your copy of SimCity before March 26, 2013 at 06:59 AM GMT and you must claim your free game by March 31, 2013 at 06.59 GMT.
At Maxis, our studio values dictate that we innovate and create something that is quirky, complex and challenging. Sometimes this bites us in the butt, but our servers are green and we’re seeing record numbers of players all online and having a great time.
Here is the list of games that you will be able to choose from once you are able to redeem. It’s a great list of games across the whole EA portfolio, so pick one and add it to your Origin library on us!

If that's the actual list then that's not bad, much better than I expected it to be.

my oil plant / electricity reactor blew up the other day. now the area is radioactive. i've been fluctuating with -1K to 8K / hr lol.

keeps saying i don't have enough skilled workers when i decided to demo the commercial area. built more residentials and put up another school. i don't know what more they want.

I wonder if the list will be different in europe, seeing it's only up on the US blog right now.
Still a pretty decent list though. I'll probably end up getting Dead Space 3

I think that there is great potential in leaderboards and region global competition, but thats not working currently ;\
