Skyrim - 6 New Screenshots (July 22)

I hate consoles and I hate developers who setting the focus on 2006 Hardware instead of using the tech that could improve the overall gaming experience.

I meas that was their argument for developing for HD-Consoles instead of the Wii. This industry is thinking completely against my taste :(

Sad....

Are you talking about graphics, AI or physics?

What makes you think anyone in this whole industry has enough time money or manpower to give you what you want?

Where are the shadows?

None of the props appear to have actual shadows...
Every object has dynamic shadows.

They appear to have a variable color cast, so they aren't noticeable under certain conditions, and the levels on these 6 new photos make them even less noticeable, along with making everything look terrible.

I'm still looking forwards to this game. Even though I really don't like the ragdoll.
Screenies posted looks good! I'm not that worried about the brightness, I'm sure I can fix that in the video option when the game retails =P

Talking about everthing that is limited due to technology issues, so definately all three points you mentioned. And in my oppinion if Skyrim wants to be the king of all West-Rpgs than this is not enough for 2011 standards from a visual perspective.

Having already seen what the game looks like in motion on Xbox 360, it seems silly getting riled up over some screenshots that don't accurately represent what it looks like.

I just wonder why Bethesda felt the need to release these. Really, what's the point?

that's the screenshot I was mostly talking about

Look at the tables in the back... basically no shadows at all, which even under the most awkward of lighting would show up a lot more, and especially in a room that relies on heavy candlelight.
The room has a lot of light in it, and that combined with the ambient room light and that big chandelier means shadows aren't very visible. You can see shadows under the tables and other objects but they aren't very visible thanks to the correct penumbra. The most obvious shadow in that scene is the huge shadow cast by the chandelier onto the underside of the arch. Wherever there are two dynamic shadows they appear to cancel eachother out in a fairly unrealistic way though.

but the room shouldn't be heavy with light.

A room that relies entirely on windows and candlelight would never be that bright and cleanly lit. There should be a yellowish tone on the entire thing, and deep, heavy shadows in places where the candle light does not hit.

Seems to look less and less impressive as more screenshots are released.

Still a step up from Oblivion, and my hopes are high, but it's not exactly a modern showcase.

They lights their cells with ambient light that doesn't come from real sources. I don't like it, but that's how it is.

For an open world game such as this, it looks quite good (haters be damned) given it's still not a brand new engine. Perhaps next gen they will utilize a modified version of "id tech 5".

There really has been nothing shown that would imply that it is. All the people super excited are the same ones that were able to look past all the problems with Oblivion and have a good time. Call me cautiously skeptical and will probably enjoy fooling with all the mods more than the actual vanilla game.
The animation and combat shown in the videos so far are leaps and bounds over Oblivion and Bethesda's other games, the creature designs (the dragons in particular) are excellent and the environments look fantastic.

Not to mention the increase from one dungeon designer in Oblivion to eight for Skyrim, with a greater emphasis on unique dungeons. As one who loves a good dungeon, that was music to my ears.

I loved Oblivion - even though it had deep flaws. Skyrim looks to improve upon it in nearly every aspect. The overall artistic direction is a massive improvement.

Hold on, people are actually down on these screens? This looks like the best open world game I've seen, I really don't know what people are mad about...

Have you not seen Grand Theft Auto 4 and Just Cause 2?

That was not true. Don't fall for Bethesda PR lies. Oblivion dungeons were bland and generic, but not because only one person worked on them.

Yeah, uh... no.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm excited for this game, but these screens are pretty fugly, even compared to earlier Skyrim media.

I have. One is almost completely empty of content and the other has tons of copy/paste scenery and settlements. Neither have to juggle hundreds of npc schedules, dungeons, items, etc.

Your right, but he was arguing that Skyrim was the best looking open world game he has seen.

True, without any of those qualifiers he would be wrong...assuming he's seen those other games (who hasn't?)

Dude I don't give two fucks about the graphics... they finally addressed animation and level/loot scaling!

I mean holy shit I thought I'd never see the day.

And there will actually be unique dungeons, semi-attractive humans, and art design that isn't generic as fuck.

I'm ecstatic. Oblivion was an abomination. Never thought I'd be excited about a TES game again. But Bethesda made some real effort to respond to the valid criticisms and deserve credit for their effort. These have never been the prettiest games...

Guys, I'm sure they will fix it. There were shadows galore in Oblivion. I highly doubt those few screens represent what it will look like come November.

I just wish this game had some kind of MP... Something like demon souls MP would be amazing..stupid bastards.

Not even usually against MP but this post grates on my nerves.

They could just have the OPTION of turning MP off... Your problem with MP is now fixed, and i have the option of enjoying a game with my friends.

I would like an optional social aspect to the game, where you could chat to other players, see what they're up to in the game. Kinda like a cross between Demon's Souls and Facebook. Obviously, this would be optional and wouldn't intrude unless the player enabled it.

Your option just cost the devs more money and less time to focus on the meat of the game. Not to mention bug testing, they can't even handle the single player in that regard.

They should never waste 1 second thinking about putting multiplayer or co op into elder scrolls. There's no reason for it with the billion other multiplayers out there.

And now the SP game is drastically worse due to the resources that were diverted away from the SP game in order to give you the option of MP. I'll pass on that I think.

Turning it off? It would be an extraneous feature not a core feature.

Drop-in, drop-out co-op (developed by an outsourced team even) would be amazing, but MP would be as out of place as it was in Bioshock.

Presumptuous much?

Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing MP in the series in future if and if only it's something that are not derived from the generic stuff we see in most online shooters. It's quite fine just being SP only game.

Theres def. a reason for it, to make it a much more fun game to play. Oblivion with a friend? Yes please. Duels with other players? Yes.

I understand it would be some what hard..i guess...Would it really be that hard to implement co op? I dont see how it would be that much harder than making a AI buddy....Just make that character controllable and there we go.

I dunno im not a dev, so i dont know how hard it would be, but dont act like it couldnt be awesome.

Demon souls proved it could be awesome. And they could to it here as well, have a random player join your server and be in your dungeon, and you have to deal with that character.

They could limit it to just dungeons if need be, for some reason i cant think of, but be able to invite your friends to help you go through a dungeon with you, making the difficulty harder but better loot, theres a lot of options to implement MP. And it could make the game a lot more fun.

None of that sounds more fun than exploring on your own, and if anything demon's souls proved how much of a pain in the ass their way was. Having someone just drop in and ruin everything you're doing was not my kind of fun.

I'm sorry but I have my COD and Battlefields for co op/multi. Anything else just isn't necessary, especially in single player rpgs which I play to get away, get lost and explore.

I'm kinda glad the graphics are shit because it means I can probably run it on my Macbook Pro since I'm overseas and don't have my gaming rig with me.

Looks better than Oblivion, and Oblivion still looked decent enough to me, so I'll be satisfied.

Yeah, I've seen that floating around lately. It's the E3 demo, cleaned up and edited and without music or narration. Voices were nice, but the sound effects really left a lot to be desired at this stage. Effects mod will be one of my first priorities.

Since when do graphic whores play RPGs?

Honestly, the really hardcore really don't care. Gothic, Witcher, and the older Elder Scrolls games were really the only games that were trying to make themselves beautiful. Most of the WRPGers I talk to don't care as much.

For example, all my RPGer friends were eating up Eschalon 2 last year.

I actually think the screen shots look very impressive. Maybe that's because I already like the way Oblivion looks.. well besides the people lol.

These pics are lacking ambient occlusion. Sorry for the shitty quick job, but the effects are most prominent on static objects in the background.

Once ambient occlusion and subtle HDR are added, they should look pretty good imo.
