Skyrim - 6 New Screenshots (July 22)

Gameplay concessions for the sake of slightly better graphics? No thank you. This has nothing to do with budget, Bethesda are making the kind of games they like to make. They aren't out to compete with corridor shooters and other "AAA" games.
That is fine as well, but when people say it does not look great it's fair criticism, not trolling.

Cday said:
Maybe Bethesda should make Skyrim a corridor shooter so people won't freak out when an open world game made for 6 year old hardware doesn't set any graphical benchmarks.
Except every other open-world game this gen pummels it technically. If you want something with a similar style, foliage and all, look at Red Dead. And there really is no excuse for the indoors stuff, not when every door is a loading transition.

The lighting in the interiors does look weird to me (as in, where is the lighting?), but this idea that every game has to set a graphical benchmark, and keep up with the Joneses makes me a little sad, and honestly just a little angry to see so much hyperbole.

Its this kind of sharp knees nonsense that leads to games with great bullshots and hollow gameplay. I'm sure Bethesda will make it as pretty as they can.

And is it just me, or is anybody else getting a Reach vibe from that landscape shot?

Add me to the list of people who expected more from this game visually. It's nice enough, and with mods and it being maxed on my PC I expect it can look very pretty, but the vanilla game should be more of a powerhouse IMO.

Still can't wait, though.

Ok, so those are for console. Urks. Don't really want.
Let's see how it all looks on release, PC footage so far has been fantastic.
The contrast and brightness blowout might worsen the whole thing but hammerguy looks bad anyway you put him.

Looking more and more ugly with each batch of screenshots

Edit: Oh, console screens? It really looks that much different? :(

Nowhere have I said that Bethesda games are the most technically advanced open world games. Whatever that means.

Red Dead looks great at times, but is also a 3rd person game. It's not meant for you to ever get a close look at things like in 1st person games. It was also worked on by like 500 or so people and still chugs at times. Aside from those couple of points comparing Red Dead with a Bethesda RPG is a fool's errand.

Not getting the criticism here. We already know it looks great going by the footage. Those exterior screens are beautiful.

What about the Euro-Rpgs like Risen or Two Worlds 2. Both of those games were big open world RPGs with very impressive visuals, and I promise you they had a budget that was probably 1/8 of Skyrim's.

For those who actually still plan to enjoy the game, check this cat out. He is playing the Skyrim theme on the piano and it sounds quite epic. The Skyrim arrangement of The Elder Scrolls theme is perfect. Makes me think of exploring misty snow covered mountains and slaying dragons, as it should. Can't wait.

Why are the dungeons so bright (like in Oblivion)? That doesn't look scary at all. Morrowind had it perfect with darker dungeons.
F that. At least I won't have to crank up my friggin gamma again. I hate that shit. It's not scary to me at all, just frustrating cause I can't see shit if it's a bright day outside. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a mancave.

...you're surprised? Of course it's gonna look better on PC's. The consoles were released almost 6 years ago dude.

I'm only a few hours into Risen and It's not really open world in the sense that say Oblivion is open world. It's more comparable with games like Fable. It's also a 3rd person game and there haven't been any screenshot worthy scenes yet. I'm playing it at the absolute highest 1920x1200 and the graphics so far are decent, but aren't anything to write home about.

I've never played Two Worlds 2 so I don't know how open it is, but wasn't that developed primarily for the PC? I wonder how the console version looks/performs.. Seems like a lame excuse to just chalk it up to "Bethesda is developing primarily for console so it inherently won't look as good as a game primarily developed for PC", but that's the reality of it.

This.

I don't know why people enjoy doing that. It's annoying as fuck.

LOL @ all the lighting complaints. First of all, these shots were originally in one of the latest Game Informers, so I imagine they were brightened. Second, you can only tell so much about lighting based on screenshots. Come on, people. You'll be singing this game's praises when you see it in motion.

eh lighting and besthesda games are usually crap, the only time they had great lighting was the oblivion demo, and that got ripped out before it came out because it ran like shit on the 360 or something.

Why are people badmouthing the ones who are complaining about these screenshots when this thread is all about the screenshots? Anyway, some of these do look absolutely terrible. I'm not expecting miracles texture and geometry wise, but I do expect lighting that doesn't look like it's from ten years ago. That said, I'm sure the final game will look better than these shots. It's just unfathomable that there would be almost completely flat lighting in this day when IMO that's the number 1 thing that makes games look truly good.

Bethesda said they have dynamic shadows for everything in the game now. I don't see why they would exclude certain objects or characters from casting shadows. Must be just the pictures playing tricks on your eyes.

I thin I will wait until it's been patched up a bit and a few decent mods have been built.
Not impressed with those screenshots at all.

I still can't believe people use shit like Witcher 2 to compare, given Skyrim's size. Also, not defending Skyrim itself, but screenshots never do justice, and even these ones look like the lighting is messed up. Just watch one of the few E3 videos if you want to see what it'll really be like.

The only thing is I'll probably drop the brightness in this game a lot, like I did in Oblivion.

Indeed, man. I mean, how does this not look good enough? I especially dig the part at about 2:05 when he performs Storm Call. Just completely bad ass.

I thought it looked pretty decent for consoles. Perhaps they aren't bullshotting us like other devs do. I'm still undecided as to whether to get it for PC or console, but at this point I'm thinking for PC cause I can stream to my TV and play with a 360 controller on my PC for the best experience.

So this is what it'll look like on consoles? Eh...good enough, I guess.

I wish I didn't let them fool me with the initial shots. And maybe these shots aren't even representative of what we should be expecting, but I feel like they are. I'll still love this game, but it looks kinda crappy.

Too many skyrim threads. Stop making new ones for little things like this.

To say the game is lacking is fine but to say it looks bad is just trolling. There are plenty of things that look very odd and underdeveloped but the overall package is undeniably fantastic for what it is.

If you've got the juice to run it at 1080p, then I guess the answer's pretty obvious?

Also, mods.

Beautiful.

If there's one thing I wish more open-world games had, it's the wide open prairie.

All footage that was release so far is console footage because most people will buy it on consoles anyway. Like i posted before the PC version will have visual upgrades like higher res textures and dx11 features and if you turn everything to max it will require a beast of a pc.

I thought they'd said specifically that this wasn't the case?

Fan interview:

9) Can we have some specifics about the PC version of the game? How will it's UI be different? Will there be a 64-bit executable?
Todd: 64-bit specific exe? Not at this time. As far as UI, it visually looks the same across the platforms, but the controls are entirely different. There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favorites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area. We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion. The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast. Last but most important, is the Creation Kit we’ll be releasing for the PC. Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans, so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.

To have an opinion about a game's looks is not trolling just because it is the opposite of your opinion.

I think it looks kinda bad. Others do too. But this will be one of those few games I jump on right away and pay $60 for.

Where does it say DX11? "Larger render modes" just means it'll render at higher resolutions, which is a given for PC.

He does note DirectX 11 support is a possibility down the line, however: "When it comes to DirectX 11 there are things they get us for free, like performance gains. You’re going to get performance gains out of it versus an older version. But the specifics DX11 does, like tessellation and all that kinda stuff, we aren’t taking advantage of that right now. That doesn’t mean we won’t in the future. We aren’t right now because we want to author it so it looks great.”

Thank you for misinterpreting my post and making assumptions about it's meaning.

I'd just like to see a thread about this game in which people don't spend half of the posts fighting about it.

I don't think their definition of a "beast" is the same to most pc gamers.
