Skyrim - 6 New Screenshots (July 22)

Ah well,
I think they need some new art people over at bethesda.
The tech is impressive but for some reason they always go with a very generic, uninspired, clunky fantasy-look, imo. Doesn't look bad but could, and should, look WAY better. If they just had more talented people working on it. Mainly concept-artists as models & textures look decent enough.

edit: yea, and lighting looks pretty awful.

My first thoughts as well...

I really think they should release the E3 demo walk-though with Todd Howard commentary in 4-5 parts like was done for Oblivion and Fallout 3.

I think that would calm a lot of unnecessary and irrational fears.

Worst thing: both screenshots have clipping D:

Yeah, this doesn´t look so hot, but I´m more interested in how it plays. Modders can make it prettier easy enough, but bad gameplay design (combat, quests, pacing) or story is hard to change.

Haha, if you guys start comparing something like Witcher 2 to this you are setting yourselves up for inevitable disappointment. Nothing on any of the consoles is going to approach the way that game looks, and they couldn't, anyway. 2005 hardware, after all. Gotta set those expectations way lower.

It looks like a big step up from Oblivion in terms of animation, but it's still pretty awkward. The most jarring omission is any kind of reaction animation to being killed. Everything just becomes an insta-ragdoll. The person getting shot by the bow in the cave for instance. Nobody dies like that. And the guy getting picked up and dropped by the dragon at the end... he's just an instant ragdoll from the second he's touched. No struggle or flailing of arms. Looks ridiculous.

That's what I hate about havok. It was cool when the original xbox was around, but it's way outdated now. Euphoria is king and shits on everything else.

It looks a bit like Fallout 3/New Vegas in the scenes but with an actual color palette. I do wish people started to take more advantage of the PC hardware though so everything isn't reliant on the community to make their games look even better.

Detail doesn't concern me nearly as much as load times. But if they can manage that kind of IQ while keeping say Fallout 3 levels of loading, and all the mechanical depth of Oblivion, and maybe moreso, this is still one of the most ridiculously ambitious games out there.

I thought the point of releasing *NEW* screenshots for a game was to get more people excited for a game. You know, you release initial shots to get people talking, then you slowly feed them ever more impressive screenshots to get people really going....are they trying something different cause these new shots makes the game look worse than the last batch of shots.

Their animation is also pretty terrible.

Personally, i love very dark, pitch black realistic dungeons (i like the night this way, too).
Something like:

(sorry for the quick and shitty photoshop).
Otherwise torches and cateyes spells are pretty much useless and there's no tension.
Plus i love the contrast, when you finally emerge into the sunlight, outside.
This is awful. I can't see anything in this photo. Seriously guys, dark does not equal good graphics.

The lighting is good in the outdoors, but in the indoors it's fucking bland.
Waiting for the inevitable "realistic interiors" mod.

And that is quite odd because the lighting in the dungeons shown at E3 looked pretty good. Some nice dynamic lighting effects. That's the 360 version as well, so I'm sure the lighting would be much more impressive on PC.

Ya it seems this thread may be much ado about nothing. Wait till we see the final product.

Probably not. Fallout: New Vegas and Brink were both Steamworks games.
One does not force exclusion of the other, does it?

I think it looks great. But then again Im not an overly demanding gamer that wants his PS3 games to look like 2011 PC games...

Dude, have you even read my post?

First of all, it was a quick shitty photoshop, and i was pretty clear about why i loved pitchblack realistic lighting.
You go into a cavern with no openings to the outside with a bunch of candles, and tell me how clear it is.
I like not being able to see shit, without a torch/spell, it's more realistic and tense.

Not saying it's objectively better, i'm saying i like it more.

I agree with you. Light should just come from the candles, not non-existant ambient light. Would add a lot to the experience.

I'll probably do two play throughs.
One vanilla, doing pretty much every side quest I can find. Then I'll play through again after a few months with a bunch of mods that change the experience like that.

...what the hell is with that carpet by his feet. some very disappointing screens, but my hopes are still high for this game.

I just hope the gameplay is improved. In oblivion all I did was go into stealth mode and 1 shot kill people with a bow and arrow.

Arrows to the feet were just as deadly as arrows to the head or chest. This made no sense and allowed me to exploit the game.

Somethings up with that shot. The ground texture doesn't seem to be up to par with the rest and there are no shadows or dynamic lights.

All of these new shots have some terrible adjustments done to them as well.

what about the wood stack on the right that looks like it's from a ps2 game, and that goat skin on this shoulder....eww

Those two examples, especially GOW, don't really hurt his argument. I'm not saying I agree but those aren't great games to mention.
That was my point. I didn't start the comparison, I just responded to it while adding the fact that Skyrim is streaming a huge open world and Gears of War is, well, not. Cosidering how much stuff Bethesda throws at their engine I'd say that they're doing pretty fine, compared to just about anything.

All I see is brown, brown, and more brown.

Put some fucking color in that shit. Jesus.

I don't think they took the time to paint dungeon walls in medieval times.

You guys are fucking ridiculous.

I agree, this is reaching some pretty deep levels of stupid. Comparing a 360 screen to the best of the best on pc, saying a linear shooter looks better than a massive open world game, complaining about colors. Ridiculous.

I'm anxious to find out why people are so excited for this. Looks like a fine game, but I have yet to see what makes it so much better than previous Bethesda titles.

There really has been nothing shown that would imply that it is. All the people super excited are the same ones that were able to look past all the problems with Oblivion and have a good time. Call me cautiously skeptical and will probably enjoy fooling with all the mods more than the actual vanilla game.

I hate consoles and I hate developers who setting the focus on 2006 Hardware instead of using the tech that could improve the overall gaming experience.

I meas that was their argument for developing for HD-Consoles instead of the Wii. This industry is thinking completely against my taste :(

Sad....

Beth games were never about marketed hype or screenshots.

Beth games are all about actually getting in and playing the free form game.

It's a DX9 engine built to run on current gen consoles, I was never expecting anything remotely close to The Witcher 2. It certainly looks better than vanilla Oblivion.

I get your point, but TW2 is also a DX9 title (exclusively so).

I have to admit...better threads degenerate into "look, bad textures" than every Skyrim thread talking about the complete abortion that (apparently) was Oblivion.

I agree with those saying the indoor environments are way too bright.

I'm also not a fan of the shadow = pitch black shitmapping they've got going on the bearded guy.

Look at it this, way - it's better than a typical BioWare thread.
