Skyrim: Dawnguard Game Informer Information

$20? ouch, too steep for my blood. Maybe on a steam sale or something. This all seems like stuff I could get with appropriate mods first. I'll have the BF3 expansion and my backlog to keep me busy in the meantime.

Was hoping they'd add a new area. The details of this make it sound like it's going to be DLC like the ones in Fallout and Oblivion. This is disappointing, cause they said they wanted to make massive expansion pack sized updates.

Sounds great. Really happy they went with this dark route. Looking forward to being a vampire lord and all of the other additions as well.

If it's a retail expansion I would have expected no less than $30. And if it's anything like past expansions (Oblivion and Dragon Age), I hear they are far from your average 5 hour DLC.

From what I understand, the price sounds fair to me. My only reason for waiting is 90 hours in and I haven't even done half the quests on the original disc yet.

Edit: I guess this is just DLC instead of a full on expansion?

I can understand what you are saying by the price, but did you play Shivering Isles? It felt like an actual old school expansion that had depth and lasted as long as some full released games released today. It's not just costumes or levels off the cutting room floor, it's well put together and worth the money.

It's still a bit tough to get a feel for the size of the DLC. If it's just one focused quest line, adding a new weapon class, a few enemies and a few new dungeons, I agree. I'm hoping there's a bit more to it than that given Bethesda's stated goal of larger expansions and how long it's been since Skyrim shipped. Hopefully we come out of E3 with a better feel for it.

I hope you're right, really. But I'm worried that Bethesda backtracked on their goal of a massive sized expansion in the face of all the errors and bugs that happened with so many player's games.

I love all this, but my only gripe is that being able to change your facial characteristics or sex should be added through an update, not paid DLC. I feel like with all the weird and great stuff Bethesda has done so far like slow-mo arrows and horseback combat, that adding that through an update shouldn't have been that big a deal.

I feel the same way. They sure made it sound like the DLC would be more like Shivering Isles size.

But... this is the first one and hopefully they got multiple groups hard at work over there.

It almost sounds like Dawnguard is about as big as most of the small, pre-Shivering Isles DLC for Oblivion bundled together. That was really just Knights of the Nine (one quest line and associated content), a big dungeon (Mehrune's Razor) and several new houses with special features (Vile Lair, etc.). So far we know Dawnguard has one major quest line, a new dungeon area (in Oblivion) and a few new locations and houses (in addition to new weapon class and some new enemies).

I wouldn't be surprised if they had a second team working on a larger expansion ala Shivering Isles, if this is not it.

It's interesting, sure. Disappointed we're not getting something Shivering Isles-sized after waiting so long, but I'll be there day one.

But goddammit Beth, you'd better make sure we get some new land to explore. You painted yourself into a corner when you introduced those Skyrim-specific dragon shouts, paint yourself out again. Have it take place in Akavir or something for all I care, there were dragons there.

Yeah, having us pay 1600pts for a new quest line, some new features and a couple of visits to the Oblivion realm seems too steep for me. I hope there's some new landmass we can explore.

I think there won't be: they'd have made a bigger deal out of it. We'll get those two fortresses, one in the ice sea and another probably in the planes of Whiterun or the area around Riften, not sure. Some new dungeons here and there, some boss creatures, but if we get any new outdoor area's they'll be really small, like the area where that dragon breaks through the ice.

I'm holding to the hope that the DLC is more substantial than we're lead to believe by those tidbits, because otherwise it would grossly overpriced, and after all the good news we're getting from Bethesda lately that is making me regain faith in them, that would be crushingly disappointing.

Its gonna be funny when the DLC turns out to be similarly sized to the Fallout 800 points DLC. Cant wait for the shit to hit the fan and to hear what the ass clowns that defend anything Bethesda do will have to say about it.

Also gonna be funny when future DLC simply re adds features that should have been in the main game to start with that existed in previous games.

Twenty dollars and a month delayed? You're gonna have to do better than that Bethesda...

I think they're really going to play up the two poles of the content, and imply it's worth twice the value because each route and perks/loot are so different.

Although this DLC sounds cool, it doesnt sound like it's worth 1/3 of the price of the full game.

I really think they've aimed just too high with that price.

You just know EA is sitting waiting to see how this sells, before releasing their own $20 ME3 DLC.

You know, the Soul Cairn sounds pretty interesting. If it's actually substantial and not just two or three dungeons, it could be really cool.

"The Soul Cairn is a realm of tombs where the undead seemingly roam free and are invulnerable to any harm. Rather than being aligned to any Daedric prince, it is controlled by a race calling itself the Ideal Masters."

Maybe this expansion will put my Daedric Armor to the test. Running quests with it is almost like grinding.

Not really understanding all the hate this is getting, sounds very much like entitled gamers.

Its clearly adding alot of content

New big quest lines
New weapons
New Skill Trees
High Level beast's
New locations (oblivion is mentioned)
Face/Gender changer (big for console players)
New shouts
New mounts
New armour

Skyrim is actually huge iv played about 200 hours worth of the game now and i still have not been in every cave or done every quest.

Not to mention bethesda has been great with post game patching espeically lately with

Horse Combat
Kinect Shouts
Ranged Killcams
Flow based water

Not huge things but they didnt have to add them anyway.

They said from the outset the primary focus for DLC would be to expand and evolve skyrim, the are happy with the scale of the game.

That aside its pretty safe to say that we will eventually get one landmass expansion but i have no idea what. Morrowind and Cyrodiil exist outside of Skyrim for no apparent reason and that could lead itself very well to new landmass. Return to the imperial city for example.
Last Oblivion Gate of Cyrodiil.

Todd Howard said

"The reason they are there - and I will not say if we are or are not using them in the future - is when we first built the landmass for Skyrim we knew we were going to have these tall mountains,"

Take from that what you will.

Its a simply choice really if you dont feel this content is worth 1600 msp or $20 dont buy it.

It'd be kind of cool from a roleplaying perspective if you could play the middle ground between the sides, which would be an interesting way to do it as a Werewolf. Hopefully the Dawn Guard are chill with werewolves, because there's no way I'll be tearing up a bunch of whiny Cullens without wolfing out and shredding motherfuckers apart. Especially if they're giving me a Werewolf perk tree, which is pretty much my main reason for getting this. Fuck yeah, Wolf perks.

Bethesda in general seems to hate giving players more options than either a single option or the two extremes. I loved that they let you play against the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim (which was an option we didn't have in Oblivion, and it stuck out like a sore thumb to me), but was always bummed that you couldn't play the middle ground between each side of the civil war. And why the hell wasn't there a way to take down the thieves' guild?

It just always struck me as so odd that Bethesda was the company known for making these huge expansive games, but then when it comes to the content they fill those games out with, they tend to be pretty... binary at best? Part of the reason New Vegas was so much better in my opinion than Fallout 3 was the sheer number of ways you could tackle the main quest. NCR, Caesar, Mr. House, truck it yourself like a boss, work with Benny, etc.

Meh, I'm just ranting. I still love TES with all my heart and am super pumped for this. Get off my lawn, etc.
