Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

for the first time in my life,i'm not hyped about a zelda game.

but the idea of 35 hours of nintendo certified gameplay is enough for make me happy

Heh it's a laugh reading all the way back to the original thread and skimming through all the initial comments, they all might as well have formed the shape of a giant 'MEH'. You can't accuse Nintendo of not knowing how to turn the hype around, the tune has truly changed. An Edge 10 is the icing of a cake that is going to explode!

Twilight Princess provided just as much gameplay. Don't see why this is such a surprise to everyone.

Whenever I think of Zelda fandom I invariably think of Bruce McCulloch's Eraserhead song, so in honor of a 10/10 from EDGE, I'll offer up a Skyward Sword version. Listen to this and just imagine the new lyrics.

I walk around the house...drunk.

I'm wearing women's slippers - man, I must be a sight to behold.

But I'm not quite sure; I lost my mirror. And the pizza I ordered offers no...

...reflection.

I walk around the house. I think about peahats who have fouled me and therefore should die. But then, I think of all the interesting potions you can make with Chu Jelly.

Once a year, I get drunk in a darkened house, for a week. I get drunk... and play...

Skyward Sword.

As I think we all do sometimes?

It's my vacation. Once a year I have a little Wii Motion Plus drunk-a-thon. No phones; not a single luxury. My horoscrope has been suspended. Loud, fantastical noises.

The first three days I just play. Well, I *drink* and play...

Skyward Sword.

The third and fourth day I usually find myself pacing, circling the TV, looking at the glow from behind. I'll pause for a pizza. I won't eat it; I just order it to prove I'm still… in control.

Skyward Sword.

By the end of the week, I interact with this majestic little game. Not so much motions as – gesticulations?

I kiss the screen. I rub my buttered belly on the screen.

As I think we all do sometimes?

I roam around the house. The darkened, drunken house. Sometimes - and this has got to be an hour before dawn - I put a rose up my bum. You know, the business end sticking out? And I sort of improvise a playful dance in my surroundings – "LA LALA LALA LALA LASKYYYYYWARD SWOOOORD!"

If you were there, in my house, you could follow a trail of those rose petals, and they would lead –

to me.

Curled up.

Fetal position.

Quivering. Crying.

My teeth chattering. Fantastical, Skyward Sword-type noises coming… from inside… me.

And as you pick me up, and wrap me in a blanket, my vacation would be... complete.

This behaviour might disturb me - if Skyward Sword weren't such a fine little game.

Don'tcha think?

Wow, Stump absolutely destroyed Drek. Well done, sir. Well done.

Also, starting to regret asking my wife to get this for me for Christmas instead of getting it myself. Sounds awesome.

i'm not saying i'm surprised,at all.
i'm saying that in a generation where really good gameplay is a rare breed, even if i don't expect being mindblowed by this new zelda ,i'm already happy only by have the chance to play a really good game for that long.

I really don't understand your logic here. So are you really saying later into the hardwares lifecycle you're surprised that such a good game could be achieved? I would think it would be just the opposite, and more highly rated games would come later in any consoles life as the developers get more used to the hardware.

Sure, the Wii was pretty much outdated spec-wise from the start, but that doesn't mean it can't have games that a reviewer thinks are head and shoulders above the rest. And as Dar as graphics, it should only be judged on what the console can do, not what's possible on other systems.

you know, I think I am being misunderstood here. My comment about the Wii being outdated should not be interpreted like I am implying that outstanding games can't happen in older or outdated hardware.

I am mentioning it because in the situation at hand, Zelda:SS reviews, we have the situation that mostly all relevant reviewers and magazines are used to extremely imrpessive in HD looking, gorgeous games that also feature compelling online multiplayer enhancements and promises of attractive DLC maps and varied content throughout a game's lifespan. The standards for (non moneyhatted) high scores and glowing reviews are at an all time high.

Zelda:SS has none of that. (yeah, neither the Galaxies, all right)

Do you guys understand what the people at EGDE must have seen and played in this game in order to grant it a 10??

we are talking about a game that makes the reviewers at EDGE feel this is the resident evil 4 of the generation WITHOUT anything else but gameplay and actual in-game content, no promises of DLC, no multiplayer whatsoever no online whatsoever, nothing else but you, a gamer, a game and a god damn controller.

I knew Zelda was going to be good but never thought this would happen again after the galaxies.

I don't think EDGE (for the pedantic, 'the people at EDGE, by and large') cares much about that 'extra' stuff.

I will be truly surprised if this game has an average of 97% on gamerankings. But there's just no way that's going to happen due to the reasons you mentioned.

For the game itself however, I honestly believe it has the potential to be my favorite game of all time.

man that Edge cover would be 10 times better without that huge Z in the middle
I think it looks better with it. Though it would look better if the gold overlay wasn't on top of the Z as well.

I don't know why people are honestly expecting, that if Jeff Gerstmann reviews it, he'd give it like 3 stars. He gave Spirit Tracks 4 stars. I actually really like Spirit Tracks, but I would not have expected that.

I wonder how much Nintendo paid for that review. It's the only way that they could possibly get a properly deserving review score from a western media outlet (See every Wii or DS game not called Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 or Donkey Kong Country Returns)

The UK press is nowhere near as bad as the US press when it comes to Wii reviews.

True, but you don't have to move your arm to play Spirit Tracks.

Gerstmann's review: "I tried playing Skyward Sword but Link just stood there moving his sword up and down the entire time! 0 stars lol!"

He gave Majora's Mask 8.3. That says all you need to know about his anti Nintendo agenda...

Edit:

Ok. THAT tells you all you need to know about his anti Nintendo agenda.

Jeff gave Wii Sports Resort 5 stars.

Oh FFS. I'm annoyed by his weird distaste of MM that he expresses at GB sometimes, but that's not an "agenda."

Are you trying to say Skyward Sword doesn't deserve the score?

Gotta try and hide it you know. Rating every Nintendo game as shit would make it obvious. He can get away with saying that WSR is good because the Giant Bomb audience wouldn't be interested in the game anyway.

Chet Rippo said:

No. I'm accusing Nintendo of paying for good reviews here because their relations with the media are so bad that it's the only way that their games can get the reviews that they deserve.

"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, his opinion, man", The Dude would say.

Nope, just terribly jaded. I've seen far too many Nintendo games get overlooked and underrated by the media and too many articles that slam Nintendo at every given opportunity, even when the story isn't really related to them. Nintendo are the media's whipping boy.

Never mind the general corruption of the media amongst the major publishers anyway, who are paid to overrate most PS360 & PC games... (nobody bothers to pay the media for a Wii or DS game since they mostly appeal to a different audience)

I don't trust any media reviews at all, from any media outlet, for any game, from any publisher. Nintendo are the opposite of most other publishers where their games are massively underrated, instead of overrated.

I have a theory!!!!

That's not so bad with media, but surely on gaming boards.

Wrong. When they would have paid EDGE the game would get 11/10

Eagerly anticipating "lol no hd dlc online coop pass jason philosophy moral choice link looks gay too japanese waggle for kids 6/10".

You know what I can't wait for?

The inevitable reviews that compare skyrim to zelda and vice versa. Gonna be amazing. I love when reviewers mix up context just because two games come out in the same week.
