Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

I'm not linking to it; it doesn't deserve to be linked to. Let's just say Zelda: Skyward Sword got a 9...and as a frame of reference, Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii got an 8.8. As we said, we're not about to question if there are legitimate reasons, and we're well aware of the often drastic differences in review policy from one publication to the next. But this is nothing more than a blatant attempt at attention, and if it were a strict editorial that doesn't really have any impact on the consumer, we wouldn't blink an eye. But this is assigning a numerical value to a game that basically says, "it's good, but there are better titles out there for your money." This...is...a...lie. That's right, a lie. Like it or not, opinions exist on a sliding scale, and we're not saying everyone is going to enjoy Z:SS, but this review is akin to saying something similar about "The Godfather II" or "Citizen Kane." We all know that Nintendo's title is one of the best adventures ever made; anyone who knows this industry and has a functioning brain will admit to this. They may not like it, but they will admit to its quality. This is what good reviewers do.

They don't lie to the consumer to get some sort of underground "elite cred." I don't care what your system is for reviewing games; if you're scoring on a scale of 1 - 10, there's no way on earth Z:SS gets a 9 in direct comparison to the other products on store shelves. I'm sorry, it just doesn't. In all honesty, based on past review scores from that publication, we're starting to wonder if anyone ever actually plays the games in question...it would be extremely easy to issue a controversial review simply for the sake of gaining attention. You don't need any real details or facts, and you can fabricate a ton of supposed negative reaction. That may not be what happened here, but I believe that they are providing our readers with a service. I believe all journalists in all industries are, and that service must be - above all else - as reliable as possible. When a consumer puts their faith in you when doing research on a product, whether it's other consumer reviews or professional analysis, you have a responsibility to that consumer.

If it's your job to be faithful to your readers, you are not allowed to do things like this. You are not allowed to indulge your massive ego in an underhanded attempt at getting attention. Video game journalists aren't exactly treated with a ton of respect by other entertainment journalists (I know, I was one), and if this keeps happening, we'll keep suffering under the same label. And that label is: "a bunch of kids with superiority complexes who just want to prove they 'know more' than everyone else...at the expense of the consumer." That, right there, sums up GamerTM's review. For your sake, just ignore it.

(PSXExtreme joke - go google)

Not even linking to the original? For shame!

I thought That was the point. The original is such a cliche. I had a different comment at first, I stealth edited after actually clicking the link.

So is the soundtrack for this game going to be fully orchestrated now? At one point it was said only some tracks would be but after reading this interview I'm not so sure. Here's the quote I'm speaking of

"We wanted to express the vastness of space musically, and one of the ways we did that was through the grandness of a full orchestra,” Kondo said.

“In Skyward Sword, one of the key themes of the game is the sky, and it has this bright and airy feel,” he said. “We felt that the orchestra was a great way to convey that to players.”

Aonuma says the final decision was made by Miyamoto after this year’s E3 press conference, which began with a short orchestral performance.

“It came off sounding great,” he said, “and after that Miyamoto-san came back and said, let’s go for full orchestrations in the game as well. I was like, okay, we can do it! I didn’t realize we were allowed to!”

GamesTM just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about gaming culture (I'm an expert), but honour and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like movie critiquing where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw Zelda over on your review, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is gamers, after reading this review, are not going to want to read any of GamesTM's reviews again, nor will they read anymore of their articles. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but GamesTM has alienated an entire market with this move.

GamesTM, publicly apologise and delete that review out of existence, or you can kiss your business goodbye.

It's not just that. I mean, Nintendo has decades of experience with high quality games. To take a highly anticipated Mario or Zelda and give it a "below high quality" score AFTER other major review companies is risky. You're either trying to get attention or you're a whistleblower. Most of the time....it's the first option

He says full orchestration. For me it means more something in the lines of "let's use a full orchestra for this game" rather than "let's make a full orchestrated soundtrack".

That would make sense but then we have to take into account that there were already some orchestrated tracks in the E3 demo. That means they would've already had some Orchestrated tracks so that makes me lean more in the direction of them approving a full orchestrated soundtrack after E3.

Wasn't the music already orchestrated in the E3 demo and trailer or am I crazy..?

Yeah there absolutely was. That's why I think the decision might've been to go ahead and orchestrate the whole thing.

Did you... did you just reply seriously to the "I'm an expert" meme post?

The game can't have a fully orchestrated soundtrack. All the latest videos must be from the final game and i still hear some stuff that sound like midi.

I hope i'm wrong though.

The question is, do you need SS to be perfect to enjoy it whole heartedly?!
camera and controls should be near-perfect.

the most important thing is that i feel like i'm on a grand adventure and have a giant grin on my face while i play. cheesy and/or crappy story is fine.

That'd be cool if they decided to make the entire soundtrack orchestrated. But I'm still holding on to part of it / most of it being orchestrated and some of it not being orchestrated. I haven't been paying much attention to the media Nintendo has released since that Romance trailer (which I haven't seen) went up, so I hope I'll be in for a pleasant surprise no matter what.

I know this soundtrack will be well-composed, because Zelda soundtracks usually are. It's just how they arrange the tracks and deciding whether or not to orchestrate the entire thing will be a surprise.

Plus, we've already heard non-orchestrated songs.

I guess even that is dependable.

Both Psychonauts and Legacy of Kain: Defiance had terrible control, but both are among my most beloved experiences and I didn't have much trouble with the camera and control.

SMG, being still one of my most beloved games as well, made me angry not so infrequently because of the camera though.

MDK on the other hand, was unplayable for me almost solely due to horrible controls.

Smh, why do people care so much for reviews? If you realy want this game you will buy it despite it getting something under a 10.
