Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

Oh come on now.
I get some people are not as sensitive as others when it comes to frame rate, but not a single frame drop?

Get used to it :P We've had Digital Foundry prove that the game drops to 20fps in docked mode and people still say they haven't experienced a single one.

Now I really wish a Youtuber would make a docking in and docking out scratch test with a brand new Switch.

lol, this.

We've seen Switches get dropped onto the ground repeatedly or blasted by 60k PSI of water through it.

Would need to see what kind of motions could cause scratches. Sliding the Switch, wobbling it when pulling out the Joy-Cons or pressing the power button, etc.

This is a goddamn no-win situation. I hate scratches on my screens and I hate screen protector installation. They almost all inevitably go wrong. The one I put on my 3DS still has some weird oily smudges under it that I have no idea what it could be...
Screen protectors are excellent these days. For Switch, I can personally recommend Illumishields, $8 for a 3 pack. Or consider a good glass one.

Learn good installation techniques. There are many tutorials online. Use the shower technique. Be patient. I get 99% perfect installs on all my devices, and when I don't it's much cheaper and easier to replace a screen protector than actual damage to the screen of an expensive device.

Just noticed my dock is bent, unbelievable Nintendo!
Yes, it's shameful. The dock is an embarrassing overpriced piece of crap. It's a shame.

But the Switch itself is still pretty awesome, and I'm in for the long haul. In a year from now I think it'll be amazing and we'll be happy to own one.

I am enjoying Zelda: BotW but this bent dock which causes scratches on the screen and bezel of the switch is simply inexcusable. Not sure how some people here are dismissing this, seriously...

Good protectors, especially glass since they are one solid piece that doesn't flex or bubble are a breeze to put on.

The amFilm Tempered glass I got has those hinge stickers but I just used the tabs on the glass to place it over. Once it sets down you literally just do what was in the video. I've had 4 devices with tempered glass now and the installation is just so so so much nicer than plastic ones in my experience. I'm sure harder/thicker plastic protectors aren't bad either. But I'm really partial to the feel of glass.

I hate shit like this, that console could have gone to a kid, instead someone ruins it for no good reason.
It makes me sad to see people destroy things, particularly brand-new items. This makes the second recent video I've seen where someone destroys something that could have made a kid very happy (a guitar amp was the other). Very indicative of a selfish and wasteful society.
To be fair, they do show a second Switch that they plan on giving away...
Then they could have given away two.
I've followed the thread since it started. I'd say <10.
I started and for several months maintained a steadily-growing list of GAFers who were first experiencing the Xbox 360's Red Ring of Death, until its size defeated me. There was a lot of skepticism when that was first being talked about, even before it had a nickname, dismissing it as "isolated" and "possible user error" rather than "design flaw."

I remember those times. Console stanning is one hell of a thing. FFS it's okay to like a brand but still be critical of its products.

I'm not dismissing the problem. I was merely correcting the user claiming there were many, many more than one scratching incident.

The manufacturing process of the dock is clearly sloppy and really shouldn't happen.

Have you had any issues at all with the amFilm screen protectors in the dock? Were people docking their Switches too soon after the installation?

Given what the dock is I find it odd it even has a front, it should be a back cradle with the front of the switch free to view... the design could be way more minimalist

I'll be picking up a screen protector at some point but have been removing the system slowly from the dock for now. Thanks to ifixit it looks supper easy to replace if needed.

Does it actually need the front? I dont have the switch myself ao i dont know. Maybe there is a way to take the front 'panel' off?

From personal experience you need to literally drop it in, in order to scratch it. There is enough room to dock it without ever touching the inner walls, and enough room to apply some cloth inlay if you want.

I haven't had any issues as of yet. But the longest I've gotten a chance to play is about an hour. I also didnt dock my Switch h for almost a full day after putting the protector on.

So is the cause the bent docks? Haven't kept up, but I'm trying to keep track of what I need to check when I get my own unit

I think they wanted to give it more of a console look.

I think they wanted to block any implication that the screen was in play when docked.

Kind of dubious, imo. It would have been cool to use as a second screen or at least for notifications when the system was off.

I thought it was weird that I had to angle it to get it in the dock without scratching the screen. My dock is warped and my screen has some scratches on it. Nothing that I can see while playing or anything, but now I have to set up a repair and stuff. I'll wait until I'm done with Zelda. Until then, I cut up one of those sleeves that 3DS and stuff come in and taped it to the inside of the dock. Real elegant. :\

It seems very likely that it is the cause. The difference can be quite big.

They probably didn't want people to accidentally cause their Switches to fall to the floor whenever they removed the joycons.

I haven't gotten any new scratches on the front or the back of the Switch. I mention the back because I did push it against the back of the dock as I put down the Switch. (This was causing the dock to lift up as I was doing it so I won't do that again.)

Maybe these bent inward docks are causing scratches, I don't know. Mine probably looks straight although the entrance does get tighter at the top than the bottom.

I just still want to know what the person in the OP article did to get scratches that deep in their Switch.

I have figured out how to stop my Switch from wobbling while in the dock, I push it against the back of the dock and then press down on its side while pulling out the Joy-Con. Of course I don't know if it will cause scratches, I haven't pulled it out of the dock yet to check.

So the bent dock situation is just random? Some are some aren't? I wonder what the percentage of bent ones is and how this has occurred.

I can't wait to buy a switch (sold out atm so can't find any) but this news makes me a little nervous :(

We don't know if bent inward docks are causing scratches yet or if they're not the only cause.

We have found that the dock has caused micro scratches or smudges along the bezel because that's where the rails in the dock are however, I'd want to know if what happened in the article of the OP has been replicated.

The problem I am having with the article in the OP is: http://www.glixel.com/news/youre-going-to-want-a-screen-protector-for-your-nintendo-switch-w470245

The culprit? Sliding it in and out of the hard plastic dock. If you gently slide it in and "miss" the USB-C prong, juggling the device into the slot (even carefully) eventually scrapes it against the hard insides of the dock, resulting in little hairline scratches that start to build up over time. There's no insulation or padding on the inside of the dock – so nothing protects the screen if you're clumsy.

I'm finding those scratches hard to believe, they are very deep and apparently, they were caused by the Switch wobbling when trying to set it onto the USB-C slot.

I'm finding it hard to believe that was the cause since there are rubber pads at the bottom of the inside of the dock so if scratches did occur, there should be a gap from the rubber pads.

The cause would have to be from some other part of the dock or something else.

If this apparently only took a week, we should see someone able to replicate it in the next week or so to give the same scratches.

Has anyone from Europe seen these scratches? Everyone I know (thankfully)'s docks are straight, so could it be a faulty American batch from manufacturing?

Has anyone been using the screen protector that comes with the official carry case?
Is that one any good? Or should I go HORI?

I've been using the official one and although it's keeping the actual screen scratch free, under natural light it is terrible. It bubbles in various points and seems to scratch or mark itself in various places too.

It also creates a weird haze look overall *sigh*

Guys calm down a bit.

How many reported cases (with pictures) do we have so far? 3 or 4? Compare that number with the number of people who is NOT having any scratch issue...and with the number of units shipped. I believe that this small amount of users is not representative of a real problem. You are exaggerating the whole thing a bit.

Way more people is having no problems at all, just like the joycon issue. Most of the users are not experiencing any problem when using them. So let's calm down a bit.

I understand that some people liketo feel inside of the community by sharing the same fear or the same pain as others do feel, and that is ok sometimes...but this is getting a bit out of hand. It is turning into hysteria...

Prove me wrong in a while by compiling an important amount of genuine reports...so far, it is not enough to start panicking...

Enjoy your devices,guys!

An open faced dock leaves your Switch's screen exposed to direct sunlight for potentially hours each day, if you have any windows at all in your living room. That's a sure fire way to damage your screen.

Let's say, for the sake of the argument, one single user reported scratches with pictures, and as a result of that, we were lead in the direction we have done, to the realization that there is a manufacturing issue happening which is causing many users (much, much more than who have been reporting scratches) to find their docks have a bend in them, which greatly reduces the available space to insert the console.

The fact this defect exists, is alone, enough of a reason to warrant being talked about and, hopefully, addressed by Nintendo, in the form of exchanges or replacements.

You have to remember, too, that we're in the first few days of ownership, people aren't going to be undocking and re-docking a lot, most will probably be multiple hours into zelda, the fact that we have 4-5 reports already, combined with the discovery of the dock front panel being bent, being a common issue, is enough to be more than concerned about.

Whether it's scratched your screen or not, bent docks is a issue that *NEEDS* to be fixed by Nintendo.

Burying your head in the sand until it's such a common issue you can't ignore it, is the absolute worst approach to an early manufacturing issue such as this.

An open faced dock leaves your Switch's screen exposed to direct sunlight for potentially hours each day, if you have any windows at all in your living room. That's a sure fire way to damage your screen.
And yet everyones TV/Monitor/Tablet/Phone/Watch/Laptop/3DS/Vita/DS/PSP handle it just fine?

It's an issue, aye, but let's give it a couple of days and if Nintendo don't say something within then week then start with the pitchforks.

So I'm just wondering what people think my best course of action would be? My Switch is coming in tomorrow so I'm just wanting to prepare.

I bought a relatively basic game container/screen protector pack from Gamestop: http://www.gamestop.com/accessories/nintendo-switch-game-traveler-protection-pack/141856

Not sure what the quality of that screen protector is, to be honest. Does anyone have any testimonials or experience with that brand/screen protector? I was thinking of applying that to the screen, applying some electrical tape or black felt to the ridges in the dock, and biding my time until my amfilm glass protectors come in. Thoughts?

Mainly I'm just worried about applying a screen protector then taking it off again later to put another one on.. I don't really have much experience with that.

I'm from europe and my dock is a liiiiiittle bit bent inwards, it seems it does not touch the screen when docked though. I have a screen protector and it does not have any scuffs or marks from the docs (it is the screen protector that comes with the official case)

Just feeling the inside of the dock it feels scratchy and rough. I think I'm going to remove the dock and just leave the usb cable so my kids can still charge it - I don't want them scratching it up. Have an orzly screen protector coming so will wait for that to be applied (and settled in) before reinstating the dock.

If you add a layer of something that is thin, it shouldn't make the switch a tight fit. There should be enough give to put 1-2mm on the dock and still fit.

Fake edit- my orzly just shipped while typing this reply.

adding to this, during zelda gameplay, I have some very random instances of ultra screen tear, where a single screen tear runs down from the top to the bottom of the screen, while docked. It happens VERY, VERY rarely, but it worries me.

Anyone had it happen to them?
