Sliding the Switch in and out of the dock will inevitably scratch the screen

There is no option 3

I agree in all honesty, and if this messes up I will more than likely do a ticket item with them for it, but I think I am good by to try this and go balls to the wall rather than not keep being able to use the dock.

For people with normal working socks, does the Switch have a slight wobble to it, like a couple of millimeters? Trying to determine my stretch threshold.

I think you mean docks not socks right?

Yes, mine wobbles a few millimeters when docked and has no scratches nor do I use a screen protector or any other protection.

Hah sure did, got auto correct sniped on phone.

Yea I was skeptical at first, but low and behold there is a nasty nick in mine and I keep my electronics fairly pristine and usually am cautious... especially when they are brand new.

Wanted to make sure, it seemed that way to me due to the nature of the connector at the base, but wanted to double check.

So there isn't any perfect screen protector for this thing, huh?

- The AmFilm tempered glass has tiny bubbles appear around the edges of the screen.

- The Hori premium warps with heat while docked.

- The official Nintendo protector doesn't fit correctly and air gets trapped in around the bezel.

Is this accurate? So basically I should wait for a better solution to come around?

Actually, with the standard Hori Protector, the $10 one, I've had no issues with it. It does NOT bubble even in the dock and gives me piece of mind since any scratches from the dock will hit the screen protector anyway.

It's a nice protector overall and doing the shower method, I have no bubbles in the protector.

I got a decent scratch on the back of my switch. I think its because I'm so worried about the dock scratching the front that i push it towards the back as much as I can when I dock.

Looks like the matte coating on the back of the Switch tablet is wearing off on me. Looks like it's around where my hand rests on the back of it. Don't appear to be from the dock but not sure.

Anyone else having this happen??

Is the widening of the dock really a working solution tho ? I can't see how it would permanently stay widened and not bend back inside after a while.

Probably too early to tell, but has anyone had any success with this method ?

No but it sounds like the same issue that "skins" were having. One company cancelled all their orders because the skins were pulling plastic off the controller.

The plastic is odd. Its like they were 3D printed or something.

Got the amFilm protector on. I have to say, they made avoiding lint, and bubbles pretty damn easy. And while it's not an absolute 100% alignment, the tabs made it easy to get it pretty damn close. Might start doing screen protectors on all devices again if they've gotten this good.

Now it's just a waiting game for the adhesive to settle in.

Just a heads up, but the USB C cable that you suggested from Google is male to male (you would need a male to female cable to connect to the dock). Still reading through, but besides that cable, it does seem like a pretty useful info compilation so far.

EDIT: In Console surface issues, you should caution against using adhesive skins because they wear away at the Switch's paint.

Thanks! Updated my Switch Survival Guide with the bit about the surface and other infos: Recovery mode, SD cards tests and more
(I even got featured on polygon, thanks to everyone)

The only skin that's touched my Switch is my hands. I have a screen protector on the front that's it.

Mine is a bit bent like that too. I think that's normal?

So... I tried a couple things to ensure my screen doesn't get scratched.

First... I tried taping a couple soft screen cleaners to the inside. This made the Switch slide in pretty tightly, and I worried that if any dirt or dust got on the screen cleaners, that would probably cause scratches too because it was so tight.

So instead... I ordered one of these...

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01FM4ZQLQ/

It came in this morning and it works perfectly and doesn't look half bad either. Now my Switch can sit outside of the dock and have more ventilation too and have zero chance of being scratched by the dock.

Pretty ridiculous that we need to jump through all these hoops. Joys of jumping in on day one I guess.

Also want to see that Okami poster ;)

amFilm applied. I have only put it in the dock on launch day, and waited until today to take it out and apply the protection. Only thing I noticed after taking it out was on the right hand side a smudge mark on the bezel, I suppose from the rubber on the inside of the dock. Waiting now until tomorrow morning before powering on, will play in portable mode over the weekend, then will resume docking on Sunday. Wish me luck :)

I got my amFilm screen protectors in today and put them on as well. Super easy, but damnit, a tiny spec of dust made it in and there's an incredibly small air pocket in the middle. I'm just going to leave it for now, but at least it came with a spare screen protector.

Seemsgood. The 3 foot ones are out of stock, but I think I'll be doing the same. I still don't understand why they would even want to cover up the screen with their dock.

Does anyone know if it's a good idea to let the amfilm screen protector "settle" for 24 hours before docking? I'm fine waiting if it's recommended, this is a nice glass protector.

Alright GAF, even though I've got the Gorilla Glass I was not comfortable docking it as my dock is slightly bent. I tested and it would leave rough looking marks that did rub off but not something I like seeing so I got some double sided tape, really thin and soft microfiber cloth, made some cutouts and put a small piece on the area that would damage it. Testing taking it out and in a few times and it's been pretty good, not even any rub marks!

2nd picture shows it is pretty snug, but can only imagine if I didn't have a screen protector or this solution in place. Might still try to "stretch" it out a bit with something but I feel a lot better about this.

You can zoom in and see the small piece of microfiber cloth:

This picture shows from up top, like I said a tiny bit snug but it glides in and out with no issues and leave no marks at all.

What do you guys think?

Just got / applied my amFilm glass protector. It's awesome and I have 0 bubbles. I'm waiting before messing with it, but I'm very pleasantly surprised by how well it fit and how easy it was to apply.

This is my first tempered glass protector, I gave up on screen protectors after a bunch of bad experiences with the old film ones. It took about 2 minutes to apply in my bathroom. I had no bubbles but had gotten a small piece of hair or something caught in it the first time so I pulled it off and used protector number 2 to get a perfect application.

It's light years better than the film protectors I tried back in the day, hopefully it will hold up to the dock tomorrow.

I received my amFilm today but I don't have the nerve to do it, even with the success stories. I have docked it 2-3 times a day since launch and have no scratches.

What do you mean? Applying the amFilm tempered glass is a easy process, and trust me, you will be glad you did.

No bubbles here with the amFilm tempered glass.

I have a type of personality that couldn't handle a piece of dust under it. I know the shower trick, but it's not a guarantee. I'm just weird, I would constantly think about it.

Welp... Fuck screen protectors

I did the shower shit. Followed instructions and I got this...

Fuck amfilm. It's a god damn debacle. The bubbles don't go. Would rather have scratches

Wat. How can you have so many bubbles, especially so big ?

Fuck if I know. I did the wipes and shit. Thing looked pristine. But as soon as I applied it, fuck town. Everywhere.

Apparently its rocket science or something.

Worst 10+ bucks I've ever spent. I'm sure the screen will be coated in jackass adhesive when I take it off.

Fuck it. Come at me scratches. Fuck it.

Ummmm it looks like you didn't peel off the adhesive backing? I still see the red tab that you are supposed to peel off the side that attaches to the screen.

Or is this a joke?

Did you use the wet wipe and not dry the screen with the dry wipe? That's the only thing I can think of for the bubbles being that big.

Was the screen coated in anything when you removed it?

Yeah nah, there's no way it's looking like that if you applied it correctly mate. For real.

Also, tempered glass aren't plastic protectors : normally you can totally remove them, wipe / clean them and reapply them multiple times over since they don't have adhesive on the "sticky" side, it's just contact and suction that does the job. I think.

Was the screen coated in anything when you removed it?

Lets find out... I'm sure it will be. The front of it, aka the non sticky side that you touch, feels tacky and shitty.

Oh my god. Some how, and I don't get how this is possible. I put it on the wrong way. Some how. Which I don't understand how it stuck cause when I peeled it off, it wasn't sticky at all. Yet it sticks to the screen... Fucking christ...

So I flip it over and its way better. Way easier But the sticky side, which I had face up... was dirty so now there are a few bubbles...

Good news is, if you do it right, it should go easy and smooth. Bad news is, if you are an idiot like me and make a mistake... its fucked. You get a 2nd one, but I was gonna share it with a friend. Whatever. Fuck my life.

If the shower method involves making the bathroom very humid then that is probably where you went wrong. I never understood people's reasoning for this method; you're just replacing dust in the air with water particles. It will likely cause issues like the ones you had.

mine came out pretty much perfect after running the shower for 5-10 min (that's a reflection, not a bubble)

No. Where he went wrong was installing it upside down. The issues were because it was upside down. Understand now?

Except the shower method isn't consistent. 5-10 min means nothing without knowing the actual humidity in the bathroom. Your bathroom may have been the perfect humidity while his may have been too humid.

No, I put on probably close to 20+ tempered glass screen protectors on phones and tablets using my dining room table for just about everyone I know and never had a single issue. If people have to go to the bathroom to escape dust then they should probably spend more time cleaning their living space.

So thats the final result in my idiot saga. Doing it the right way, it seems almost fool proof.

I had some bubbles cause of shit getting in there, but i peeled it up and put it back down a few times and its pretty damn good. The corners are fucked cause the adhesive there is gone to shit. But everywhere else... pretty flawless (other than it being covered in shit on the inside cause I had it exposed before. Doesn't bubble at all really, you can just see the shit locked behind there.

So let that be a lesson to you gaf, pay attention and it should be super good. This whole process started me hating the fine folks at amfilm, but for as much fuckery as I bumbled into, it still went on great despite it. So 10/10 amfilm.

The shower room is probably bullshit, its not needed. The hinge method is good enough and making sure its clean.

You need to learn how to read fast moving threads. He installed it UPSIDE DOWN. Bathroom or no bathroom, that had nothing to do with it. Please read the last several posts for clarity.

only it's really not, he just messed up big time when he applied it.

PS water particles and dust particles don't work the same.

Don't understand your hostility either. It's not upside down either - it's just vertically flipped; if it were upside down then the adhesive wouldn't be on the screen. Either way, it wouldn't have caused as large of issues as he had from being as you say, "upside down".
