If you're transposing that on top of the other pic as is, I don't think that's particularly accurate.
The DS3 is slightly smaller in the photo than on the 'slim' box.
Using the DS3 and independently using the width of the disc drive (12cm), it ends up more like this:
I'm fairly confident about those dimensions since they work out the same, like I say, if using DS3 dimensions or the drive's dimensions.
Im not; I altered the dimensions of the DS3 controller to be perfect with the current PS3 pic, so the box shot is scaled down a bit. Then I just rotated it to match.gofreak said:

What's interesting is that once I matched the scale of the controller, the PS3 slim matched near perfect with the PS3 width.

The more I look at it, the more I hate it. It looks so silly, cheap and kiddy.
The PS3 font especially. It better have the Spider-Man font. They didn't change it for the slim PS2, so why now ?

Slim PS2 is the most attractive sony console IMO, so something that takes after it in material, size, and design would be good.

Maybe my eyes are failing me, but I'm getting different width to depth ratios for the official PS3 dimensions, the photo posted above, and in official Sony photos :lol
In the photo above, the ratio of width to depth is ~1.25:1. In a Sony Photo it's ~1.22:1. The official spec is ~1.19:1.
I was basing my calcs off the official dimensions.
This could explain the discrepency between the proportions I calced and those we see in the transposition above. In the above pic the photo is taken from an off centre position, off from the front, which may make the console look slightly less deep than it should be. But I don't know how to explain Sony's PR shots :lol
It's hard to say which is the right way to do this :| Maybe we'll just have to wait and see. It's a bit coincidental that taking the DS3 in the box pic to be 1:1 with the unit yields the exact same dimensions as taking the blu-ray opening to be 12cm.

Glad more people believe this is real that's the direction I was leaning last night while sleuthing that Chinese forum. It's interesting the thread is gone. I remember one of the things the picture-taker said was that he took these secretly and he didn't want to say his location for fear of being found out. He also said he'd delete the photos if shit hit the fan. And sure enough, the thread is gone and the original board where he hosted the photos deleted his thread as well.

They just recently re-did the boxart. If they're doing it again, sounds like a lot of indecision at the top of SCE or the new slim PS3 + brand is so hush-hush that very very few people know. Although there's been a lot of re-org at SCE relatively recently so this might the first sign of that new management.
Although I hate the current boxes so I'm all for it and I even like this new font.

I love how impulsive GAF is, having made up their minds about the aesthetics from the grainiest photos ever produced in console forum history.
Just from the shape alone, the new unit looks very nice especially since it has a sleek and contoured profile. I'm sure Sony will make certain that the finish on the case impresses.

I got excited that maybe someday I would be buying a PS3 when it's slim, but then I saw it and realized it looks like a knock-off console...

I can't remember how many times when an iPod, console, or handheld was leaked through crappy pictures people hated the design, but once official images came out they all praised it.
