Fascinating interview on Hardcore Gaming 101 about the Akira SNES game.

Thanks to that article. Today, I learned that there was a game developer studio in Glasgow Scotland during the early 90s. I must investigate this more!!

EDIT: Neogaf gets a mention too. There was a 2005 thread asking if there was ever an Akira game released.

I bought the german version of Terranigma a few years ago, thought it would be a decent opportunity to practice the language (also played Crusader of Centy in german a few years ago), but yeah, ended up never even starting it. Maybe time for that this summer!

Woah! Dont put it off any longer! Such an epic game . . .

Speaking of that game Is there a NTSC patch for English language Terranigma? I'm curious how the repros work. When I put the PAL cart in a NA SNES I get a region incompatibility message

I was under the assumption that my repro was an ntsc game (like some battery backup sports game) with Terranigma loaded onto it and a new sticker applied. Hence no region issues. Thats me guessing thou . . .

soooo

I bought this on ebay. £80 total, free postage from japan (and the guy marked it as a gift below £20 for me so no customs I hope)

I'll be selling the two controllers as I have a classic pal pad and an asciipad I would rather use, and that'll give me back £15 or so at least. I'll also be rgb modding the console of course. The console looks a bit grubby, but I don't see any yellowing that would be an issue or any damage - the shell just needs some time in a sink with some scrubbing.

good deal? yeah? no?

Hope y'all don't mind me asking again:

Any recommendations for dungeon crawlers on the SNES? First person or isometric or whatever.

I think the lack of responses comes from... the SNES is a JRPG machine. If something obvious like Final Fantasy puts too much "J" in JRPG and not enough dungeon crawl, then most of the SNES's best offerings are disqualified.

There's some stuff like Wizardry, but AFAIK something like Wizardry is more of a PC game than an SNES game, so it's less likely to get recommended.

They're certainly outshined, but it's a niche genre so I'm not surprised. Given that even the gameboy has its suite of dungeon crawlers, though, I figured the SNES would have to have some goodies.
Equinox Landstalkerish
or
Arcana Similar to Shining in the Darkness

BrainLord.
I'll check 'em out. Arcana seems interesting and I saw it recommended elsewhere, as well.

Hey all. Recently did a 50/60hz switchless mod on a PAL SNES and have a few questions regarding the Super UFO Pro 8 (I know this gets a bad rep but I've ordered one to suit my needs for backing up etc).

1. I've heard you can use the UFO to rip a special chip cart, then play the rom from the UFO and use the special chip features of the attached cart to play it. In in similar manner, could I use an NTSC/ENGLISH rom of Super Mario RPG off the back of an actual NTSC/JAPANESE Super Mario RPG cartridge? As this would save me money and I find USA carts to be rather unsightly (plus I'd rather not widen the slot of my PAL system to fit them).

2. I'm interested in playing Starfox 2 on an actual SNES. Lots of repro carts I've seen out there are quite expensive. I've also read many reports that the advertised chip piggy-back function of the UFO doesn't actually work so playing the rom off of another SFX game (say Stunt Race FX/Wild Trax) wouldn't work? If so, where is the best/cheapest way to attain a 60hz copy of Starfox 2 in a PAL cart shape?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me with this :)

------------------------------

UPDATE: Just answering my own question in case anyone else needs this info in the future. Super UFO Pro 8 ONLY works as a pass through for DSP-1 carts. They do work (despite some out there saying no pass through works) but no other type of specialist chip does. There's very little documentation out there on this. Luckily I only wasted a little cash on JP Mario RPG but be aware if purchasing one for yourself. Still works great to rip carts and back-up saves though!

Just finished Castlevania 4 and decided to play Dracula X. Why the fuck is the movement speed so slow!? I swear you move fast when you jump, so I'm constantly jumping trying to move quicker.

How does anyone have the time for sfc Fire Emblem The Mysterious ... Emblem? I don't think I'll ever have time for another FE game again; I'll just be playing this one forever.

SNES Dracula X? I ask because it's been awhile since I've played either version of Dracula X but I believe the movement speed may be a little faster in the PC-Engine version? Don't quote me on that. Either way, there's definitely a deliberate pace to either version of Dracula X. Just give it some time and you'll adjust.
I would like to dig more into the SNES version. I played a little bit of it via emulator but I would like to play it on my RGB modded SNES hooked up to my recently acquired 13" PVM. Having said that, I generally don't like the idea of paying more than $150 for just a cartridge, so I've had a hard time justifying buying Dracula X.

I'm thinking of buying a Super Everdrive to get my hands on some obscure stuff and the most expensive games on the SFC / SNES. Will my modded PAL console handle it? I've read some people have had issues.

Some games do the "This game pak is not designed for your Super Famicom or Super NES" (I think US Super Metroid is one?) but that goes away by flipping the 50/60 hz switch. I have no issues playing real SFC or US SNES carts on my SNES.

Its crazy expensive these days, but as long as you are on the lookout you can always be lucky and find a deal. I paid 80$ for mine just a few months ago, so there are still deals to be had. I think the game is pretty good for what it is btw, nothing like the original, but still a pretty good game in its own right.

Drac X (and XX) have the same walking speed as the NES/MSX/Game Boy games. That was the whole idea, a return of the classic, deliberate walking/jumping mechanics, with a little more fluidity (slightly smoother overall, the minor amount of movement mid-jump, and jumping on/off stairs).

Castlevania started as a Ghosts n Goblins ripoff, and maintained a similar jump mechanic for all of its first ten-ish games. It's more limited, but the level designs are designed around that. It's overall a better design IMO, it makes for tight action platforming action. It's a tight game, not a loose game.

Castlevania IV is a great game, but plays completely differently to classic Castlevania. Much more scrappily. In the same way, SoTN went too far in the fluid control direction and basically abolished tight platforming and action in favour of smooth movements which ironically make jumping and attacking a chore instead of a challenge. Both those games have fundamentally weaker action platforming gameplay as a result of the 'upgrades'.

yeah...that's an issue. you can patch the roms beforehand to get rid of that.

the other alternative for yourself is the SD2SNES. It's about double the price, but the compatibility is insane and it has auto-region patching

Looks like I'm gonna go for the SD2SNES then, after I can save up a little bit.

Its definitely worth the money. Instant loading, support for basically all expansion chips aside from super FX, bsx game support, msu-1 support (streaming audio mods), etc

If you're in the UK, there's one on eBay for £110 which is only twenty quid more than ordering a Super Everdrive with DSP installed.

I finally got around to modding my SNES to take SFC games.

Only three posts broke opening the case, smh lol. The case halves were basically fused together. I was pretty sure the gamebit driver was going to strip out. I have not opened it since I bought in ~1993.

Carnage at bottom and on one of the posts on the top case. I epoxied the posts back on and they're good to go now.

My SNES is super yellow, if you can't tell already. In anticipation of de-yeloowing it in the future I swapped out the gamebit fasteners for philips machine screws, #4 x 1/2". They're not a perfect fit but they work well and I don't have to rely on gamebit tools. Metric wise M3 was close on the size but the store only offered M3 in .50 pitch which was way too fine.

And done!

Argh, I hate phillips screws. You know how your screws were so tight that you accidentally broke three posts and you were worried that your gamebit was going to strip out? Phillips are pretty much guaranteed to strip out, even in less-severe situations. They strip out easier than anything (even the archaic flat-head), and once they slip once, they round off their corners and make it even easier to slip and second and then a third time. And then you need to find yourself a reverse-direction drill bit to try and drill out the ruined remains of a crappy screw.

Robertson (square head) rules. Phillips should die in a fire.

Oh by no means am I saying philips are the best. I would go square, hex or torx if I was worried about them stripping out. The hexes were $1.22/ea whereas the philips, which I may remove once more, were $0.10/ea. I was fine going philips for this.

got my copy of Super Metroid. In pretty nice condition. It's going to test my ability to use a SNES controller, though, for sure lol. I'm definitely not used to it.

Also got a handful of box protectors, which will ease my mind a bit.

I picked up one of the n3DS SNES games--Super Mario Kart.

Looks great on perfect pixel mode, but a bit too small for my tastes.

Should've went XL. Oh well. Faceplates, compact size and SFC buttons were too hard to pass up.

I need Secret of Mana!

The trick with HBP is to wait for their 40-50% coupons. I don't think those games will stick around that long, but thats what I do. My HBP has been a wasteland for years though.

Agreed that they're not bad, but I want DEALS from HPB. I could go on ebay and get those prices all day. And it's like they did exactly that by searching ebay for the going price.

You can catch em slipping sometimes. Also on coupon day, you have to be really early.

Speaking of, anyone need UN Squadron?

Anyone have a link to what they would consider a good power cable for the US snes? I haven't been able to locate my original cable and I have found a few on Amazon but the reviews seem a bit mixed, plus I trust NeoGafs opinion more when it comes to stuff like this.

Are you in the UK? I used to use a mega drive 1 psu with a cable adapter.
