SNES Game Collecting (Tips, discussion, and info for like minded collectors)

I'm at the "commit to buy" page and it still says "Payment: Paypal" I'm afraid to click the commit to buy button. Are you getting that message after you click that?

I really want to buy a copy of earthbound to play through (never played it), but I'm afraid the battery might be dead

They are easy to replace, and if you're too afraid to do it yourself, there are places you can send it to to do it for cheap. I've done it, and I fucking suck at soldering things.

No don't click that. It's different now. There was a different screen before.

Too late.

Clicked the commit to buy button to see how it went since I wouldn't mind a $15 Chrono Trigger just to have the box to display. It let me buy it and everything without giving me a warning, but when I go to pay it says he can't receive payments. So, yeah. I removed the links. Maybe he'll get it worked out and maybe I'll get a $15 CT, but I doubt it.

He has some other games that I wouldn't mind getting so no luck with Paypal? Wonder if they suspended his account temporarily or something?

It looks like he pulled the Chrono Trigger auction. Something weird is going on with that guy. I would proceed with caution, although paypal has you covered pretty well.

Oh, you bought it. Nice.

I'm currently having issues with Paypal myself, so it might not have anything to do with the guy being shady. I can use paypal, I can buy things through it's system, but it won't allow me to put any monies into it. Something about not being able to verify my account, even though I've provided everything they've asked. (Password, social security #, etc.) Now they want a hard copy of a utility bill as further proof. It's weird, but not a big deal as I don't sell on ebay anyway. It's just odd Paypal is putting up as many hoops as they are these days.

Great Paypal is being the shady one now, they seem to have a lot of problems lately. Asking for a utility bill is ridiculous I need to transfer out my few dollars in there to make sure I don't get that hung up or lost in their crap system.

The funny thing is, I don't even get utility bills. Getting bills through snail mail is so archaic, I had all of them changed to paperless long ago.

This just came in:

Great shape except for the back half of the cartridge is a little faded.

Can anyone tell me the correct order of which levels to play first? I haven't played it in so long I can't remember.

I had the opposite problem a few weeks back, where I could receive money, but I couldn't send anything (rendering me unable to purchase anything on eBay) even after I provided the identity verification they wanted. I had to call customer service, who looked up my account and unlocked it for me.

With that said, I feel far safer buying with Paypal than selling with it, because if something goes wrong with the former, Paypal and eBay will pretty much always take the buyer's side.

Think I'm going to pick up Primal Rage, almost only for nostalgia. It's only $10 so why not?

Chill Penguin, easy to beat...then I think dash on over to Spark Mandrill? I know Armored Armadillo's weakness is the spark, but everyone else i'm blank on.

EDIT: Going to have to make a video about Sparkster and Sunsetriders. Just got those in yesterday and man...its insane that neither received more attention. Especially Sparkster, it feels like something you'd see from Treasure (then again early Konami so thats expected).

I don't want to jinx it, it could still get lost in the mail or whatever, but I feel like telling you guys about my latest purchase, which is a CIB Shadowrun for €30 :D

It is the US version though. Being in Europe means I now have to either find a US SNES or a way to play it on my PAL one.

When (unsuccessfully) searching for some Saturn stuff in my area a few weeks back, I came across some local game shops that had a decent amount of SNES games in. Might go out in a few and see what they have.

Chill Penguin, easy to beat...then I think dash on over to Spark Mandrill? I know Armored Armadillo's weakness is the spark, but everyone else i'm blank on.

I usually go Chill Penguin (For the Dash Boots) -> Storm Eagle (Storm Tornado's pretty much the best weapon for clearing out enemies in stages) and mix it up from there. Weakness wise, you can go for Spark Mandrill or Flame Mammoth after that.

I honestly think that the SNES version of Sparkster is a better game than the Genesis sequel, but I guess I feel that way because the SNES version plays a lot closer to the first game.

Chill Penguin -> Spark Mandrill -> Armored Armadillo -> Launch Octopus -> Boomer Kuwanger -> Sting Chameleon -> Storm Eagle

I always go for Storm Eagle after Chill Penguin though.

After it's long journey with USPS across the country twice, my Mega Man X 2 finally arrived today. It's in absolutely perfect shape. I wasn't sure from the picture, I knew it was either dusty or had some small rips, luckily for me it was just dust.

I opened it up just out of curiosity (and a tiny bit because I was so shocked at it's condition I thought maybe it was fake). It has a weird board I've never seen before. Chips are different from other SNES games I've seen also, and it has a cool Capcom branded chip.

Here's the board and then it compared to a couple other games:

Pretty weird and cool looking. For $60, I'm pretty happy with it.

Yeah, X2 (and X3, I believe) have special Capcom chips in them that made some cool visual effects possible. (In X2's case, it allowed for some pretty cool wire frame effects.)

super mario rpg legend of the seven stars
mega man X
mega man x 2

Some recent craigslist finds. AVP with box and manual. Box is pretty beat up but I'm not all that concerned. Gradius 3, Darius Twin, SMBAS, and Wanderers from Ys. All for $40. Got the SF2 from a fellow GAFfer for $15. Not bad.

Thanks guys. I went to Storm Eagle first and got my ass kicked three times in a row so I'll try Chill Penguin first next. Great music in this game too!

BTW isn't there some way to get some sort of fireball attack like from the Street Fighter games??

I spent the morning going to different thrifts, game stores and pawn shops all because of this thread!

Anyway, I ended up getting the following for $40. Doomsday Warrior sounded cool, but the Youtube video I just watched... yeah.. I think its a shit game. Oh well. I picked up Power Rangers after watching the video in this thread and because I remembered renting it back in the day.

I was going to ask if I should have picked up a $10 Super Adventure Island.

Yeah. Have to get all the other items first (armor, hearts, energy tanks, all enemy weapons). Then go through Armored Armadillo's stage four times (I think four, maybe five or something). At the end of the stage each time you need to make sure your health is 100% full (including tanks). Right before the boss room you'll ride on a mine cart thing with all these birds flying around, when it gets into the air, speed boost and jump to the right and climb the wall to the top. On your fourth times up there a Dr. Light container thing will appear with the fireball.

Hope that made sense and maybe others could correct anything I have wrong. But, I think that's it.

EDIT: Here's a video of it. My mind was blown by the fact you don't need to finish the stage, just grab the capsule and jump in the hole. I thought you had to completely finish the stage four times. Fucking crazy.

Guess you don't need the full health/tanks either. Just have to have them.

DKC and Super Metroid came in the mail today, DKC is great. However Super Metroid wont even start, how would you guys recommend cleaning it to see if I can get it working before going through the hassle of Ebay's Buyer protection shit? I'm pretty pissed that it isn't working.

Have you tried cleaning the contacts?

Just get a q-tip and put a little bit of window cleaner on it. If you don't have q-tips, use a napkin folded up. Clean the contacts on the game, and when you're done, use a clean q-tip or napkin to wipe off any extra grit and/or fluids. Let it sit a good ten minutes then try it out.

Just remember - don't use an excess of fluids. Use just enough to get your applicator damp.

So that copy of "Donkey Kong Country Competition Cartridge" came today, I was right, just the normal version. :p Oh well, I'll just re-sell it for same price.

I use rubbing alcohol and qtips on every new game I get in. It's never failed me. Use one end wet, then the other end to dry it off. I sometimes use a second one to dry it off if it still seems damp. Let it sit for a couple minutes to be sure any way.

If it's super dirty I've had to clean them up to three or four times before it fully came back to life, though that's usually NES games more than SNES. I have had plenty of nasty SNES games that literally did nothing until I'd qtipped them a few times and they came back to life no problem.

Also, if your not already doing it, try posting the cart in different ways (like mostly but almost in, angled more to the front or back). Sometimes that helps.

Before I put it up on eBay cause it is a rare find.

Anyone here want Miracle Piano for $65 ?

As you can see in the mega pix it is in excellent like it has never been played shape but getting this without the piano and hookups just to have might mean it is time for an intervention. Not like you can justify it like EVO, Wild Guns or Hagane as you might want to play those.

Given the price differential between SNES and most Super Famicom games, I'm thinking about picking up some SF versions of games I want to play, plus some that never came over here.

"Modding" an SNES to play Super Famicom games is an easy removal of some plastic, right? Is it pretty much idiot proof? What tools do I need?

Also, has anyone played the Super Famicom Fire Emblem games? I'm thinking about getting those. I know absolutely zero Japanese, and actually have never played a Japanese game. Will I be lost or could I find guides or something that can translate stuff for me?

Other games I'm thinking about (including some of the SF Rockman games) probably don't require much reading - just would need to figure out the menus.

Start with SF exclusive action/adventure/platforming games or games that are just cheaper in japanese that are of the same genre. All you need are some needle-nose pliers to move the tabs inside back and forth until they're mostly gone, or a flathead screwdriver and a few light taps to make them somewhat flat.
