Illusion of Gaia
GAIA1b.jpg

Anyone ever Lawnmower Man? It was absolutely insane. It switched between 2D sidescrolling and like a mode 7 - first person thing.

It's nice to see you more active on this board than some months ago. :]

I'd go for Illusion of Gaia too, I restarted it a few weeks ago and the game is still damn neat.

hagane -- consummate visual style and clever, varied levels make it the best action-platformer on snes. it borrows from all sorts of famous ninja games -- ninja gaiden, revenge of shinobi, ninja spirit -- but as a whole feels original. it came out so late in the console's life that it was largely ignored. developed, incidentally, by red of bonk and gate of thunder fame.

skyblazer -- wonderful side-scrolling adventure game. this was what kazunori yamauchi was doing before he decided to ruin racing games.

pocky and rocky -- i don't know if this is quite "underground," but its cute graphics belie one of the best and most intense top-down shooters ever. my favorite snes game, i think. the sequel isn't quite as good.

wild guns -- another overlooked natsume classic. a behind-the-back shooter in the style of cabal or nam 1975, set in a luminously drawn mecha-western world.

operation logic bomb -- nifty blend of dungeon crawling and top-down shooting, with gorgeous toaplanesque boss sprites.

Arcana - One of my personal favorites, that I never actually got around to beating or owning. (Ah the childhood days of weekend rentals.) It's been so long, I'm not even sure of the quality of this dungeon crawler, but I remember absolutely loving it when I played it.

This isn't as underground, but why the hell do people remember Chrono Trigger and forget about Secret of Mana.

Cause CT is better? ^^
Actually, as much as I love SoM, playing it 3 player as a kid was really what made the game such a blast, and now trying to play it alone, it just isn't as much fun.

I don't think I've known anyone else that loved these games too. Pockey and Rocky 2P for the win, otherwise it's almost impossible to actually beat the game. Easy mode just gives you more bombs and lives! THE SLOWDOWN HELPS, KEEP SHOOTING FOR THE LOVE OF GOD KEEP SHOOTING.

Cybernator:

I don't know how underground this title would be, but damn is it fun. Difficult too. Stupid Asteroid Level.

Lufia II:

The be all, end all RPG that was released outside Japan. Amazing dungeons, puzzles and a simple yet fantastic battle system with a twist- Item Point. IRON KICK! IRON KICK! CURSED ARMOUR MY ASS!

Soul Blazer:

Precursor to Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. Quirky, controls were a little wonky (four directionals rather than eight) and had a Dog named Turbo.

Brandish:

SOOOO underrated. For the time, one of the best dungeon hacks available unless you had PC. I've spent alot of my life on this game because I FIND PHAT LEWT, I KILL SHIT and IT GOES ON FOREVER. Very long, hard and a blast to play. People's complaints about the camera (trying to simulate 3D at a time where it was impossible) are totally unfounded. HE CAN SIDESTEP, and if you've got ANY SPACIAL 3D ABILITY TURNING DOESN'T FUCK YOU UP.

My list:

Cybernator - the soundtrack is AWESOME! So underrated.
Alien III - A platform game with tension.
Jurassic Park - A lot of people hated it, I didn't.
Stunt Race FX - Was actually fun, and had several playing modes.
Exhaust heat II - Good racing game
Demon's Crest - How did so many people overlook this one?
Mega Man 7 - Overshadowed by the X games.
Road Runner: Death Valley Rally - Believe it or not, but a good game
Bubsy 1 - A poor mans sonic, but still entertaining.

Plok

One of the nicest and funniest platfformers no one gives a crap about.

yeah Plok was a very very nice platformer

I add:

YoungMerlin_boite.jpg

not very underground but not very popular either

Ahhh Jurassic Park, good experience, one of the few FPS (it has sections of FPS play) I actually played and didn't loathe, but totally ruined by lack of ANY GODDAMN SAVE FEATURE, whether password or actual save file.

Plenty of choices, but here's one (the spiritual predecessor to Illusion of Gaia) I absolutely love this game.

I've been trying to find this game for a long ass time. One of the few Megaman games missing from my collection! *cries*

It's not easy to find, especailly with all the die-hard Megaman'ers out there hoarding copies of the game, but if you can find a copy on Ebay, it'll only cost you around 25 bucks.

Oh I know baby. Unforuntetly I only buy ones that still have the manual and the box, making finding this guy even harder.

So far I have Megaman 1 - 7, X - X8
All with cases and manuals. But I want to get Megaman Soccor now.

Prince of Persia~

The SNES port is BY FAR the best PoP version there is. A whole lot more levels, great art direction, and a few tweaks and surprises make it the ultimate PoP. I luv it.

Equinox~

Great quirky puzzle/adventure/maze/dungeon crawler game. A little on the hard side, but pretty cool still. Music by Tim Follin helps too. :)

Super Double Dragon(Return of Double Dragon)~

Best 2D beat'em up ever for me. The counter movements were so cool back in the day, still are even. :P

I agree with Bubsy...not great, but fun, and good soundtrack...let us never ever think about Bubsy 3-D!

Don't forget the Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger games! The side-scroller beat'em'up and the fighting game were rental-tastic fun!

*Edit*
Yes to Super Double Dragon too...and great soundtrack! The game has slowdown like crazy though...still was fun.

Yeah, that could be tricky.

Fortunately, I bought my copy back in 1993, so I still retain my box and manual, though the box is no longer as minty fresh as it once was. :(

yeah, that Bubsy soundtrack is an addiction.

For many years, I could hum the opening title theme to Bubsy, even though I had long since forgotten where I heard it from.

One day I booted up Bubsy for SNES, and said "THAT'S WHERE THAT DAMN SONG CAME FROM!!!"

Quoted for truth. I remember playing this game and thought, man this is just to goood, why hasn't anyone talked about it. When i told my friends i was playing they mocked me. Oh well, perception is a bitch sometimes.

I know this is a SNES thread, but the Megadrive/Genesis Roadrunner game was awesome as well. I played it years after the fact, and was blown away by just how much it looked like the cartoon. Plus, you get to play as the Coyote. I've always sympathised with him.

Oh man, no kidding! I used to hate that you had to basically finish the game in one sitting. That's the reason I never did complete it, no matter how much I played.

I got to the very end, no ammo, no shit fuck all and I was waiting for that stupid helicopter to pick my character up AND I WAS MISSING ONE FUCKING RAPTOR EGG. SLKJAKLDJALJDASLkj

I went looking for it and died. :|

Some honorable mentions here! You got most my picks already.

I support:

Equinox
Goof Troop
Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
Hagane
Pocky and Rocky
Wild Guns
Stunt Race Fx

I'll add F-1 Pole Position 2 -- my fav 16bits Formula one game.

Totally agree with EVO. ALso:

and, of course, the hot follow-up:

Man, teaching kids that being a greedy CEO is fun. Gotta love late 80s - early 90s mentality. Then again, CEO greed never really went out of style, did it?

Jurassic Park...god that is some frustrating shit. Nevermind that after playing what, 5-7 hours in a row all you get is the (shitty)intro played backwards. Die programmers, die.

Hahah, well actually playing it was fun. Other than the lack of save function. I should actually get around to beating it one of these days.

E.V.O
Goof troop
Alien 3
Batman Returns
Xmen
Weaponlord (though its aged terribly, it was cool at the time)
Jurassic Park
Final Fight 2 and 3

Oh yeah! Alien3. That was the first time I was actually creeped out by a game. Lights out, alone at home, Alien3 in the SNES. Scary stuff. Great game.

Unirally/Uniracers (underground or not, don't know, but a extremely fun pick & play game)
Cybernator

Sunset Riders
Super Punch Out

if you played nes and snes games for a "beautiful" ending you might as well not play at all :P

:lol I'm just saying it was frustrating. I don't like the game as much as Dragona does, either. :P

Super Punchout is NOT an underground classic, dammit! EVERYBODY loves that game!

Speaking from an european point of view, I thinks it's a bit underground. Here, in Spain, only few people loves Super Punch out for example.

Space Mega Force: 4 layer parallax!! Killer weapons, my fav shooter from the first.

Tetris Attack. Best Puzzle game ever. EVER!!! And coming to GBA in a few weeks (in Japan at least!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pac Man 2. This game was freakin wierd, but super unique. would RULE on the DS, as all you controlled was a hand.

There were so many great SNES games... what happened! I look back at the SNES, and then at the GC, there were at least 20x more great SNES games... this gen (totaling Xbox, GC, and PS2), has finally surpassed SNES and Gen imo, but just in the last year. 16 bit was good.

woah i totally forgot Goof troop, pop'n twinbee and daffy duck, excellent games

i add some disney classics: Maui mallard, Magical Quest starring Mickey Mouse, Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures and Taz-Mania.... ah good ol' snes times, when platforming was THE genre.

Turtles Fighters got way unbalanced when you unlocked the boss characters.

One of my favorite gems was Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse. Great damn game.

Terranigma.

*Bows to Quintet*

I loved visiting the Quintet building in Neo Tokyo. :lol

It was kind of nice seeing them have a sense of humor about some pretty shitty things about their jobs, such as the high work hours.

But anyways, the gameplay is terranigma is fun fun fun!

The ending was really sad, though. :(
