SNES Underground Classics ! Let us remember!!

Arcana - One of my personal favorites, that I never actually got around to beating or owning. (Ah the childhood days of weekend rentals.) It's been so long, I'm not even sure of the quality of this dungeon crawler, but I remember absolutely loving it when I played it.

Its actually still pretty good. Very nice music. I remember a sequel or something similar being released for Saturn in japan. Sucks about that.

My nominees are:

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs - the only thing that hurts this game is the length. But considering how frickin hard it is, that won't be a problem for most people. I remember going to EB back in 94 to buy a game, and I saw this for 15 bucks. Absolutely flipped out in the store.

Demon's Crest - There were reviews complaining that the game was short and easy, but if you actually did EVERYTHING you were supposed to, it was considerably long. Not to mention there are multiple endings. I beat the hidden boss, and I will never get rid of that save state.

Dragon View - considering how bad Drakkhen, I don't blame most people for staying far away from this; hell I doubt anyone even heard of it. Not a direct sequel to Drakkhen, it has the same first person overworld, but combat is now real-time and side scrolling. Long as hell, with some good music from what I remember. I urge everyone to try it at least once.

Hook - awesome, awesome game. I played it based on the perfect score gamepro gave it, and while i don't think its perfect, its one of the better action games on SNES.

I stuck with domestic games, as i could go on and on about imports.

Man... why didn't KOEI port Uncharted Waters, Aoerobiz or Brandish to GBA? All 3 would've been fantastic... instead they just ignored the little guy for 3 years. :/

Quintet's creation trilogy demands a rerelease somewhere too. Or hell, just give us a new earth raising ARPG from these guys somewhere instead... DS would work pretty well I think.

Drohne pretty much covered my picks in his post (man, I can't believe somebody else was into Operation Logic Bomb - I loved that game). About the only game I'd add is The Ninjawarriors - it remains one of my favorite side-scrolling beat-'em-ups to this day.

What about PTO? The war strategy game was actually quite deep and Advance Wars brings back a lot of memories of playing PTO. I remember paying $80 for it brand new back in the day, man.

Those who mentioned Shadowrun and Lufia II are better than everyone else. That is all.

Equinox~
Great quirky puzzle/adventure/maze/dungeon crawler game. A little on the hard side, but pretty cool still. Music by Tim Follin helps too. :)

Super Double Dragon(Return of Double Dragon)~

My two old favs, I still haven't gotten sick of Super DD after all these years and I'll never forget about how many awesome days and nights I spent playing Equinox. I'd kill to see that series come back someday.

I know alot of people hated it, but TLOR blew my mind when I played it. It had some of the absolute best audio I've ever heard on Snes, loud, creepy sounds with some of the best flute based tracks I've ever heard.

There was this pirate themed game that I used to like back in the day. I can't think of the name of it, though. It was a sidescrolling action game that came with a huge instruction booklet/comic book that told the game's story.

TETRIS ATTACK IS COMING TO GBA???????

When did THIS happen????

Happened August 22nd according to IGN. Except it's gonna have the Pokémon skin over here, of course. Pokémon Puzzle League it is. But still... AT FUCKING LAST!!

Now all we need is a online multiplayer WiFi version on DS and I'll get to owning each and everyone of you!

you're thinking of Skuljagger. I played it back in 93, but fuck me if I remember if the game is good or not.

Bah! No ammount of Pikas and Charmanders can take away from the bliss that is Tetris Attack.

What's "TLOR"?

I played the old PC CD-ROM version of Lord of the Rings from Interplay and I loved the music. Similar flute based tracks (proabably very similar, except CD quality). To this day, I will still pop in the CD and listen to the tracks. It's that good

Well I definitely need to look into that. I'm not sure, but I remember hearing the SPC rip of the snes soundtrack isn't available because it uses some weird format or something.

Equinox has one of the best SNES soundtrack. Extremely nice ambiant style. Even more ambiant than Super Metroid imo.

Seriously, I love that soundtrack and the way it was implemented in the game is amazing. Rather than hit you with constant background music, the soundtrack is fully integrated with the environment you're in. The actual music just comes and goes as it pleases, kinda freaky on some levels, like the Ghost Ship dungeon.

Are there any other games with soundtracks similar to Equinox?

Indeed.

How about a compilation of all 3 on the DS? :D

Or maybe put them up for DL on Nintendo WiFi Connection. Actually, they might already be doing that, since Nintendo published Terranigma in Europe. (On a somewhat related note, Dan Owsen worked on the English translation for terranigma).

*listens to the Terranigma Ending Theme Arranged from the Terranigma OST.*

Such awesomeness.

assault suit valken / cybernator - brilliant game from masaya. really loved it, great gameplay and controls and amazing soundtrack. also had a nice context.

super tennis - played the hell out of this, fun game. sample, edobou, lengou, wagas, obekka, selese, etc = no liscensing ;)

E.V.O.:Search for Eden
SoulBlazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma
Lufia II:Rise of the Sinistrals
Hagane
Run Saber (total Strider ripoff)
Space Megaforce (shooter with a ton of weapons)
ROBOTREK!!!

I would die and go to heaven if this ever happened. Terranigma is up there as one of my favourite games of all time. Illusion of Gaia is so under-rated it's not funny and Soul Blazer kicked serious arse back in the day.

Nintendo also published Illusion of Gaia/Time in America/Europe. I don't doubt for a second that Square Enix is salivating over the prospect of downloadable NES/SNES/N64 rereleases on Revolution's Virtual Console.

great action rpg. Some good dungeons w/ puzzles and neat weapons that function completely differently as well as different charge up spells made for a very sweet game.

Pictures are of the japanese version cuz thats what image search came up with first =P

Bahamut Lagoon is probably te second best Strategy RPG ever, under Shining Force 2 slightly. Nice storyline, good SNES graphics, detailed, polished, and very, VERY humorous. Probably the funniest RPG I've played on SNES. Although it has a pretty serious environment and storyline tone, you will never forget the time your teammate was caught beating off in the corner or your friends all "Becoming an Adult" at the harem. Or, of course, the elderly, brink of death scaredy cat SUmmoner wizard who constantly hits on you and gropes your ass.

This game was sadly never brought to the US, but it's been Fan Translated to pretty good effect. Except for a few sections not being extremely understandable (Sometimes you have to think for a bit what everyone's trying to say), it's pretty damned good. My favorite SNES RPG for now, even dethroning Super Mario RPG.

ROBOTREK!!!

was robotrek the game where you built up your robots to fight in battle? If so, that game was sweet.

The computer interfaces in Jurassic Park were insane, just used to fiddle with those in the InGen labs for ages, then again I was 11 so perhaps there's a slight nostalgic sheen on that. Shame about the save thing - always kicked the bucket around the time I had to get the poison gas for the raptor pen. it certainly made the T-Rex encounter bloody nerve-wracking.

Yeah, you got to make robots, equip them with different parts (weapons, movement) and combine items and such. The game had a sort of SRPG feel to it, you can move your robot around a minimal amount of space, and you could attack enemies from the back to do more damage and such. I remember enjoying the game a ton, although the translation is *abysmal*.

BTW slayn I noticed you posted some screens of Brain Lord - I played a tad of this game, and it seemed pretty good, but several Gamefaqs reviews said it's not even worth playing. Is it an overall enjoyable game to play? It's probably the only Enix US release I don't own or never spent any time with (I sold 7th Saga but used to own it at one point :P)

pocky and rocky -- i don't know if this is quite "underground," but its cute graphics belie one of the best and most intense top-down shooters ever. my favorite snes game, i think. the sequel isn't quite as good.

Easily my fave "under the radar" SNES game as well. That an UN Squadron, the first shooter/RPG in my opinion.

The Nintendo press release just says "Dr. Mario/Puzzle League," not Pokemon Puzzle League. IGN, though, says Pokemon. I guess we'll see.

I played it around 6 summers or so ago so my memory is foggy. I basically had a summer where I said, "Its time to play every single snes rpg I've never heard of"

I recall brain lord being one of my favorites. I don't know if I ever finished it though... I think I might have gotten stuck on some puzzle in one of the dungeons and gotten so infuriated that I couldn't figure it out that I just gave up and meant to come back to it but never did. (Didn't know about gamefaqs at the time)

edit: and I'd say it is way above something like 7th saga =P

To be honest I've never played Soul Blazer or Illusion of Gaia. I did play through and complete terranigma, though.

Even though I played the heck out of it, I never beat Jurassic Park either. I'm positive I would have had there been any kind of a save system, as I enjoyed the 1st-person indoor sections way more than I should have. As weird as it sounds, walking into those indoor installations was a pretty tense part of the game, not knowing what was in there or if you were going to be attacked.

And Weapon Lord was the GOD DAMNED SHIT! Yeah, it hasn't aged all that well, but my friends and I dug the combat system. Definitely not a pick-up-and-play tournament fighter, but it was awesome watching some of our fights after we got the system down. IIRC, this game was the precursor Namco's Soul Calibur series.

Rock N Roll racing was tits.
Uniracers was loads of fun.
Not sure if it was Underground, but I always thought Doom Troopers was fun.

Toaplan-esque bosses? That, and the Ikari Warriors meets Metal Gear vibe just got me to purchase this off Ebay right now. Thx for the heads up!

I just started playing Equinox, and it's pretty cool. One problem, though: How do I get to the other side of room 1A in the second dungeon? The walkthrough says I can push two blocks together to make a platform, but I still can't reach the other side. I realize this is probably a shot in the dark.

One of the games I got around the time of SNES' launch:

It was a pretty bizarre game... and I never quite knew what the hell was going on, but the game's strange obscurity still hits a sweet spot with me. I also enjoyed the music. Apparently Kemco made a sequel, but it seemed to have lost the bizarreness of the original.

OMG - Ikari no Yousai! What you failed to mention is an amazing FX/music, and a brilliant way in which the game presents the bosses. The art style reminds me of some later day Cave shooters - and that's probably where the art lads ended up at.
