Tell ya what... I'll forget everything I think I know about Kpop and take some time to listen to this over the next while. If it moves me I'll come back and publicly eat crow.

Speaking of shitty, I don't get why people have to shit things up for it to be good. I mean, I get that there are definitely a good share of idols that are straight out boring, but I also see a deep obsession with image in America. Not a perfect image, but one that has been roughed up. Why you always gotta be so tough, America? Is there no joy in life? I just don't see why light and clean has to be considered lesser. It's only a different side of life for a different purpose.

I actually agree that America's egotistical "fronting" is just as skewed as upbeat music. I'm not actually talking about the imagery of American or Korean music though. More the lack of freaky, interesting emotion in kpop voices. But that could be what I want more than what Korea wants... or I could be ignorant of the good stuff.

The word "clone" hurts. I know what you mean, but don't use that word if it isn't literally what you are intending because people will flip out. As for the dirty human soul of Korea, there is plenty of that, it just isn't on the music shows that make it across the ocean.

I honestly don't get this. At least not in any way that you can't equally judge any other country for "ripping off" the pop of some other country. Music is happening all over the place all the time and the way influences transfer from nightclub DJ innovations to recording studio is quite smeared about. It is extremely rare that anyone sits in their garage for 5 years while listening to nothing from the outside world and makes something genuinely new from themselves. It's nigh impossible to do that, in fact, and the mere mention of it as if it were a reality consistently occurring as the rich West's great gift to the world is extremely silly to me. Sorry if that offends you.
All I know is that when I hear pop music from Russia, Japan, India, I think "that sounds different and I can't get that flavor anywhere else"... and when I hear kpop I think "sounds like pop music sung in Korean". It's fine it's just, as I said, I get no motivation to listen to it aside from liking the girls.

Actually I'm Canadian and I'd say Canadian music is pretty much a clone of American music except, worse, still in English. :p

It's actually the fact that I think of Korea as a unique culture which motivates my surprise that it sounds very familiar (so far).

But this is the wrong thread, and I'm done for now :)

Regardless of what is decided there, rookies from a minor agency will always have it worse.

Turtlenecks and full pants in summer.

RIDDLE ME THIS, BAT-MAN-SOO: What is the point of censoring TV beyond what any 5 year old is going to see walking down the street? Have you seen the Korean girls around town? What innocence are you saving?

If SNSD went back to the awesome hoodies, I would shed no tears.

I tend to think some photogs need to back the fuck off.

See that knitted sweater nerd behind her, LA GAF ?

That should have been you.

Edit: If that was in fact a gaffer, my apologies.

Aside from the harassment, how can you be two feet from Yoona and be dicking around with a camera?

OH MY SHIT, A WILD YOONA! QUICK, TAKE A PICTURE!

I never understood why fans persist to harass artists doing ordinary things like travelling.

If I bumped into them at the Airport I would have a chat with them, but I certainly wouldn't camp out and wait for their arrival like Bill Oddy snapping a wildlife doco

I understand the thrill of seeing them but these people really need a little self-control.

Anyway Jessica with dark hair looks absolutely stunning. Is there a more poignant and pure beauty? Wow.

http://www.allkpop.com/2011/08/sbss-running-man-finally-starts-to-gain-steam-among-korean-viewers

Although SBS’s Sunday variety show ‘Running Man‘ has been drawing a strong response from international viewers, its performance at home has always been stagnant, recording only single-digit viewer ratings for the past couple of months, thanks to strong competition from its competing programs: MBC’s ‘I Am a Singer‘ and KBS’s ‘Qualification of Men‘.

However, according to recent ratings and viewer responses, it seems that the tide may be turning for the action-variety reality program. The latest episode recorded a 14.7% in nationwide ratings, which placed it in first place along with ‘Qualification of Men’.

The general consensus among experts is that ‘Running Man’ took its time to clearly establish characters and a strong foundation, while its strongest competitor, ‘I Am a Singer’, used up its energy and buzz too early, and is now slowing down after its initial ratings burst.

Another reason for its re-discovery by Korean viewers may lie in how ‘I Am a Singer’ is now moving away from its competition with ‘Running Man’. The survival reality show, which was in the same slot against ‘Running Man’ until just a few weeks ago, switched time slots to an hour later, a move which experts deemed to be a straight challenge to the current king of Sunday variety, KBS’s ‘1 Night 2 Days‘.

The move seems to have benefited ‘Running Man’ more than any other program; thanks to the removal of ‘I Am a Singer’, the show has gained a clear playing field, gaining viewers in the process. The show is also being praised for its interesting and innovative games, as well as strong, established characters and situations such as the ‘Monday Couple’.

COME ON, KOREA. DISREGARD SHITTY SINGING COMPETITIONS.

lol at "took its time to clearly establish characters". "Experts" my ass.

Finally watched RM episode 1 the other day. Amazing show right out the gate, I can imagine it only gets better from here. Both the females on the show are so badass, are they in more episodes?

Sadly Lee Hyori was not a permanent member. But Song Ji Hyo sticks around. It only gets better, especially the themed episodes are awesome.

They've only done that one episode. Ji Hyo is on episode 2 as a guest, but becomes a permanent member after that.

Ji Hyo definitely got better after a while, she seemed a bit unsure at first.. but then the whole show got much better after it had been airing for a number of weeks.

Are you surprised though? With all the accessibility kpop fans have in comparision to western artists they tend to slide to the side of fanatical.

Lets not forgot...

That historical drama Ji Hyo played in is one of the more sexually explicit movies I've seen, Korea or otherwise. True soft porn.

You should check out the Korean movie scene. Plenty of films have oodles of fairly explicit sex scenes in them. It's kind of a shock to look at Drama, which is incredibly coy about everything, to then watch a Korean film and for it to be a very liberating experience.

I kind of like the emphasis on tv as a family-safe thing. Of course, there are points at which it is taken too far, but there are also times when it's no accident that a family-friendly show is also a really, really good one. Like Running Man and IY. I love seeing old folks and little kids both equally excited about it.

And the shows have so much heart that it didn't seem ridiculous when, say, Joong-Ki teared up when he was leaving.

Watching RM 1 again, and it's hilarious for someone to say that the show's characters took a while to develop.

GwangSoo is shy and unreliable from the start. Jong Kook is the scary one. JoongKi is naive and enthusiastic.

Jae Suk is, well, Jae Suk.

I'll admit, when I first started to watch K-Drama it was difficult for me. The fact that they would side-step so many obvious elements for a family friendly tone was frustrating. In the last few years though, its really improved. I think they've found a fine line between family friendly and action/love/drama that I'm satisfied with. Secret Garden & City Hunter are good examples of this I thought.

And yeah, with RM its great to see mutual respect and a kinda childish approach to a variety show, which is difficult to find outside Korea.
