So, Burnout Takedown

But no, seriously, this game is amazing. It's the most inbvolved, action-packed racing title I've ever played. It has great graphics, a great sense of speed, and a choice of either racing or killing your opponents. It's kind of like F-Zero in that regard, I suppose.

At only $15 I felt like I stole this game and I'm ashamed that I didn't do it sooner. If you don't own it or haven't played it, now is a great time to pick it up.

The only things I hate are the unskippable tutorials with Striker and all of the load times.

IMO its one of the most shallow arcade racers ever. the driving itself is stupid dull. if it werent for the terrific crashes, the game would be average. definitely an overrated series.
 
I totally feel the same way(as olimario does)....and i felt like I stole this game when i got it for $50....just so many good times. I love the burnout series.

But yeah, this topic comes up like every other week.
 
As much hate as this game garners around here, I love it too. I bought it a couple of weeks after release on a whim with a gift card, really unsure of what I was doing, and ended up putting 14 hours into it the first two nights I had it. Sadly, after that it got lost in the backlog shuffle, I still intend to get back in before this fall though. I think I had a third of the gold medals.

I have the PS2 version, BTW. I got my bro the XBox version, and I just didn't care for the controls (triggers, etc.) after playing my version.

Never claimed it was deep, just fun. It has all the pros and problems of my other favorite arcade racer, F-Zero.

Play both a crash junction and race in the world tour mode. After you watch the tutorials and play the level once they will go away forever.

Yup. I probably played it for 30 hours the first two weeks it was out. How can anyone get tired of massive multi-car pileups?!?! Jeez. There's no pleasing some people.
 
very fun initally but it failed to keep me playing after the 10th hour. still an awesome game though
 
I really enjoyed single player when I got this when it came out. Recently a few of my friends got this and we've been playing on XBL. Good times.
 
I picked this up when it had dropped to about 30 used, and it's worth every damn penny. My main complaint is that the difficulty seems to spike at the very end; I've got a gold on EVERYTHING but the Special Grand Prix, and I am just failing absoultely horribly on attaining that.
 
I have to get two medals (get two bus takedowns or two tram takedowns in a single race = Freaking hard....)

and two signature takedowns (Wine truck takedown and I think the boat truck takedown which are freaking hard to get as well)

Other then that I am 100% complete.

I rented it this past week or two and thought it was pretty cool, but the rubberband AI is just an absolute bitch. I can't progress any further because I keep getting ditry disc errors on the tracks I need to win....I'm not sure if I will buy the game or just return it for a bit. How much cash does it give you towards Burnout Revenge? Is the Xbox version $15?

I don't get why people keep complaining about the tutorials. There's what, like 4 of them? And you kinda need the game mechanics explained to you anyway.
 
I absolutely despise racers, Gran Turismo and the like, but honestly the only ones I've really tried are simulation racers (like GT) and Wipeout Fusion (puke). Maybe picking up a purely arcade racer like Burnout will change my mind (I do like Mario Kart I suppse :lol).
 
I would say that this game has provided the absolute most fun multiplayer game sessions I've ever had. I've never heard sober college kids yelling at the tv that much.

Just find the tracks where the sigs are (Vineyard/Waterfront iirc - it's in the rewards menu) or where buses/trams are fairly common (that REALLY long Far East course for buses, I think - silver lake maybe for the trams, forget the name) and do a Single Race with the lap counter as high as it'll go. It can be damn hard work but you can get ahead, slow down and loiter around the sig/bus/tram areas easy enough in the single races, I found.

Took me ages to get the Tuc-Tuc sig, then I managed to blag about five in one race. :)

Might be an idea to do the sigs in Road Rage mode if you don't want a lap/time limit hanging over your head.

Maybe drop to Compact or Muscle class too - gives you a bit more time to think about things. Yeah, it's pretty simple advice but it might just do the trick.

God, I love B3 so much...
 
I loved the game (have since traded it in) but the online multiplayer was bugged big time. I would have kept it had the online experience not been complete shit.

When did you last play it? It was terribly broken for the first couple of months or so (thanks EA) but then EA fixed it (thanks EA - I mean it this time) and I've not experienced any problems with it since.

Easily one of my fave Live games.

Same here. That and I didn't want to start the game over after I got a new xbox....it pisses me off that I couldn't save BO3 to a memory card....

Well, EA obviously didn't fix it in time. Maybe they should learn from their mistakes and not gimp the game from the get go and get it right the first time.

Now I am leery about buying the next version as a result.
 
I approve of this thread. BO3 is my favorite arcade racer if only for the satisfaction of a well timed takedown. There's beauty in watching an opponent's car crumble and explode. That said, I enjoy single player more because of the slow-mo view.

I heard the Crash Mode is way too easy in Takedown which is a shame. Burnout 2's Crash Mode actually required some strategy.
 
Personally, I think the whole connecting to EA shit in the Xbox version is fucking stupid. And what's with the phone tones? This isn't the 80s

Hey, doesn't Burnout Legends come out this month? It was originally scheduled for June I think...I'll have to check on this real quick.
 
Sorry, but I'm agreeing that the rubberband ai, and shallow racing experience keeps this game from being a classic. I've done more rail grinding in this game than Tony Hawk 2. I can't even think of another racer that doesn't punish drivers for not staying on the road, away from the sides.

I know, that was totally lame how about every other race I got thrown out of the room or offline, it really ruined the experience...
 
I loved the game (a first for a EA published game since a looong time) until the moronic rubberband AI became way too annoying. It's ok for 6 cars crash/race mayhem, but in duels I want to be able to actually win by my skills and not by more or less exploiting the stupid AI. Winning by basically not using the boost until the final corner is not my idea of fun. Losing a 6 minutes duel because of ONE crash you could not avoid thanks to the incoming traffic that was on top of a hill (so no chance to avoid it) is DEFINITELY not my idea of fun. That's the only game in my life that had me send a controller flying to the nearest wall.

It was the first time ever, and hopefully the last time. Especially since it was a limited edition controler :(
 
I found Burnout 1 + 2 a lot more satisfying as they were much harder, had much better track design and a lot more traffic. If you could apply the awesome production values of B3 to either B1 or B2 it would kick B3's arse. The crashes, aftertouch, and takedowns were indeed very awesome. This is why I'm eager to see how Burnout Legends turns out. Best elements of all 3 games.

And yes the crash mode in Burnout 3 sucks arse!! Nearly no skill at all involved and little strategy compared to Burnout 2's awesome crash mode. I'm so glad they are getting rid of the x4 and x2 multipliers for Burnout Revenge. They really spoiled the crash mode.

And what happened with the splitscreen multiplayer? Burnout 2 (and 1) are incredibally addictive and fun in multiplayer and the Xbox versions are 60FPS!! So good. Very fun trying to beat your records. But B3 is only 30FPS (and less) and has no records! Me and one of my mates must have put 100 hours into multiplayer on B1 and B2. Put maybe 5 hours into B3.

And why the hell did they take out the REPLAYS?

Crap ---

- Dull, straight courses
- Dumb rubberband AI
- Where the hell is the traffic? (compared to earlier games)
- No replays
- No multiplayer records
- 30 FPS multiplayer

I remember thinking when B2 came out there was no traffic compared to the first game! :lol

BO3's traffic all seems to be in the online multiplayer mode. Tons more then in single player.
 
I need to buy back Burnout 3. Traded it away on a good trade-in deal after getting all golds. Most fun I've had with a racer this gen.

How man Crash Junctions does Burnout 2 have? I'd buy it for those alone.
 
i just popped in burnout 3 in the last couple days, trying to finish up my game. i gotta say, the crash mode or whatever is fucking boring as hell. i must have completed all the takedown/race courses long ago cause i dont have any left to play. all i'm doing are those crash courses and it's just the same shit every time (find best route, collect 4x multiplayer, crash)

I didn't care much for the Crash Events either. Initially, they were amusing, but got old really quickly.

I like Crash Mode, although generally speaking I think Burnout 2 had a better implementation.

In Burnout 3, it mostly boils down to grabbing the 4x token and managing to hit a few vehicles in the process. There were a few crash junctions where getting the 4x wasn't always a guarantee of success, but for 80% to 90% of them, that's how it played out.

Burnout 2, on the other hand, didn't have multiplier tokens, and your multiplier was determined by how many cars you crashed. This formula isn't entirely flawless either, but overall it was more rewarding.

Crash Mode in Burnout Revenge is supposed to be set up somewhat like the one in Burnout 3 in that it has Crashbreakers, but they are removing the multiplier tokens.
