So, did the events (in-universe) of Total Recall actually happened or was it a dream?

I always took that as part of the implant as well.

Recall has a reputation for fucking up their procedures, so it makes sense that they include Recall fuckery as part of their implant to make it seem even more real.

That is exactly how I saw it. Whether the procedure is working right or not, the spy story always begins like that for everyone. Right in the recall office.

I never even reflected on it being all an implant but I totally see how that could be the case. Which would turn it more into a thriller than the sci fi action flick I've been watching all these years.

Amazing!

Dream. The plot does not make Sense too. Why the hell the evil guy want to erase his memory or kill him, if the Idea, was that he could be a Double agent since the beginning.

Why send the doctor to try to convince him? What If he accepted or got killed, then the evil plan would fail.

I thought it was based on some book or short story that left it ambivalent on purpose?

But just speaking to the film, I have no doubt it was meant to be interpreted as actually happening. It wasn't a deep film. Seemed pretty straight forward.

Oh no, the book is way *less* ambiguous than the film.

I really wish someone would give Ubik a solid video version. I think it could be fantastic.

Don't read up on the ending.

I always confuse Ubik with The Demolished Man - I only realised they were different books when I saw someone make a cheap Bester pun about it.

Wow. That's kind of a crazy mix-up. :) I can't imagine getting those two mixed up.

Both are absolutely great, great books, IMO.

I havent read the book, but it is based on Philip K. Dick' "We can remember it for you wholesale".

One of 4 things happen.

First, he buys a trip to Mars and gets the spy special. It plays out exactly like that.
Second, he buys a trip to Mars and is actually on the table about to get lobotomized because it went wrong.
Third, he is part of the resistance working against the bad guys.
Fourth, he is part of the bad guys falling into the resistance, and then destroying them from within.

Every one of these plots are presented without ambiguity and can be taken for granted and truth as is.

This "dumb" sci-fi action film is probably the smartest movie in the genre.
