So has this generation aged the 'best'?

It's getting to that point in time where the consoles are a bit dated now...

but with the release of games like GT4, this generation still manages to pull out some suprising bits of graphical treats.

Compared to a similar point in time in previous generations, how do you think this generation has fared?

The only way to tell if this generation has aged "the best" is to wait for next generation to see how those games fare in comparrison :|

uh.. wtf? You can't say how well this generation has aged; not for another 3 to 5 years, mininum. I mean, jeez...

I totally already covered that in my post, copycat! Now we must duel.

I haven't really seen enough of next gen to decide. I think in some cases last gen games still hold up, usually due an excellent array of textures or art desing. I'm still impressed by OOT on a number of levels. Though I'm not too much of a critic when it comes to graphics. Here's hoping EA's "might" renders are somewhat representative of what actually will be produced on next gen consoles.

Oh man, that Porsche render is glorious...

I think that 16-bit platformers like Super Mario World and Sonic are holding up the best out of anything out there, if you consider desirability vs. age...

Maya pre-renders with trillions of polys != new generation graphics. Those screenshots are PR bullshit.

We (sort of) know what kind of GPUs and CPUs are designed for the next gen, and despite what Sony might have you believe, they won't be doing 16 trillion flops.

This generation hasn't seen a lot of ramp-up in terms of what's impressive on a given system. As examples, GT4 and Halo 2 look better than their predecessors, but not hugely so. Technically, they're superior, but on a purely visual level it just isn't that evident.

There are a number of reasons for that. When you are dealing with lower quality graphics, increases in detail are that much more evident than with higher quality graphics. There's also the issue of not having added hardware built in to game carts or expansion packs. A lot of the growth within earlier generations stemmed from throwing things like the Super FX and DSP chips in a cartridge with a game. A game like Yoshi's Island or Starfox simply wouldn't have happened without that hardware, and you don't have that flexibility with optical media.

After re-finishing Halo 1 after Halo 2 I can say that there is a huge difference in IQ between the two games. The texture quality, lighting shaders and bumpmapping make for a really huge difference..

But is it really a "HOLY SHIT!" kind of experience? To me, it hasn't been. Then again, I may just be jaded.

i expect this generation's games to age well, just as 16 bit console games have generally aged well. current 3d has just reached a certain baseline competence. it'll never look bad, even when it's been considerably outdistanced by newer hardware. there's a pretty massive technological gap between, say, super gt on model 3 and half-life 2 on a high-spec pc. but super gt's merits are such that it still holds up.

Agreed...things like high frame rates, clear textures, rock-solid polys, etc, for the most part these have been a "given" since the DC days. It's nothing like the jump from PS/Saturn/N64 to DC/PS2/XBOX/GC. Soul Calibur for DC still looks great even after 5 years...the same couldn't be said about say, Tekken 1 or 2 5 years later(the glitchy polys, the pixellated textures, etc).
