So how bad is the Switch stock situation?

My brother and sister-n-law both work at target and said that they're probably going to keep any Switch they get and create stock for the holidays

They can't possibly be referring to November/December. No way is that true. Were they referring to Memorial Day weekend?

I don't get it; why would they hold on to it? A sale now is the same as a sale later. They're only adding to the demand, enabling scalpers!

Makes sense if they view it as being the "hot" item for holidays. Having stock to sell will drive people to the store where they buy other shit.

I got so lucky in my trip to the US. In the first Walmart I went there were a bunch of Switches in stock. A few days later I went to a Gamestop, another big batch of units. Bought a case there. To be fair, I went to a lot of other stores and it was indeed sold out everywhere.

What I couldn't find for the life of me was a 2DS. Every store had at least one galaxy N3DS, but I never laid my eyes on a single 2DS unit. Weird.

This was in Vegas and LA.

I have to drive from Charleston to Charlotte today and I was wondering if yall had any tips for finding one. Should I check small towns or Charlotte? And will I have the most luck at Target you think?

Istocknow

Just check that and call places accordingly.

But not when you start doing that in May. That'd be ridiculously early and would hurt rather than hurt the sales you can manage for that system.

So, a few weeks ago, my switch fell off the couch at a buddy's house and ended up with a small point scratch on it. It bothers me. After I finish Zelda in the coming weeks, I'm intending to sell on Craigslist (advertised as a Switch with a scratch) for like $260 or something, and then buy another. Am I crazy and/or a jerk?

Maybe a bit obsessive, but I wouldn't call it crazy. Why would it make you a jerk?

Nah, that's doing you and whoever's cool with a $40 scratch discount a favor. Seems like a win-win to me.

It makes no sense whatsoever. A Target isn't going to put any Switches on shelves for the release of ARMS, Splatoon 2, and any other major release before the holiday season? And there's no way Nintendo would be ok with such a move, especially if it became widespread.

I think people are overreacting to the holiday statement. By holiday I'm guessing that they are referring to Memorial Day which is exactly one week from today.

Memorial Day weekend is basically the "unofficial" start to summer and kicks off with tons of sales and specials at a lot of stores.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if any Switch stock stores get in this week they hold until the weekend since stores will have a lot more traffic in them.

I mean, multiple people already pointed this out as a possibility. But it is weird to refer to Memorial Day as "the holidays."

For me personally I have heard several coworkers refer to Memorial Day as the start of the "holidays" since after it there is almost a federal holiday every month until the end of the year.

So perhaps they could be referencing that their store will be holding stock for the major holiday in that month.

My targets got restocked today, and pretty fair amount too. Between Best Buy yesterday, some random Walmart's over the weekend and Target today, there's certainly been some of that Switch hunger fed

Finally found one at my local Target. My store only had 2 when I got there at around 10am, but the guy there said it hasn't been as crazy as I've come to expect given people still looking.

Local target in South Twin Cities metro had four the other day, picked one up. Friend and I went back later, about 3-45 minutes, to get him one, all gone.

That doesn't really make a lot of sense and I worked retail for several years, but ok.

I really doubt the stock situation is going to drastically improve by this holiday season to offset the combination of more positive buzz, more games being available, and it being one of the hot items of the holiday. It's probably going to be insane trying to get one around the holidays.

Obviously anecdotal just reading this thread, but it seems like there was just a big restock. Hopefully Nintendo's May numbers fall somewhere between the March and April sell through.

Friend and I went hunting for one today, took 3 best buys, 2 Walmarts, and 2 gamestops before we found one, and it was the last of two after a shipment that came in this morning. Crazy that stock is still this bad 2 months in

Part of me is like "You can live with it. It's your fault anyway, bro." It's not a very bad scratch either. But yeah, it just seemed petty to sell a perfectly good switch over. It's a good point, though. I'm only out 40 bucks and someone will get a nicely priced Switch. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for a replacement, I suppose.

If Nintendo is really producing 14M+ Switch this fiscal year, probably not.

With the kind of demand the Switch have going right now in the slowest of seasons, how heavily Nintendo will push ARMS and Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey still to come, AND the fact that Switch will see its first holiday season surge later this year... this console may very well be sold-out in several areas for very long time.

I'm saying this as someone who wanted to purchase one this summer, but not feeling very hopeful, though I'm very happy for Nintendo's success.

Idk, if they actually ramp up their production to 14m, I don't see it. Switch has gotten some of their casual fans back, not not their Wii casuals. Those are probably never coming back and presumed dead

Bought my 3ds on Craigslist. It was dark and I didn't notice that it had a big scratch. It bugged every time I picked it up. I snagged a Black Friday version last year and I couldn't be happier. I support your decision.

Okay...
I don't know what else to say? It was a joke about that demographics l I think it is speculation that the Switch approaches first year PS4 numbers and there are some barriers that will work against that happening. I hope it does, though!

Didn't notice the sarcasm.

3DS shipped 13.52 million in its 2nd fiscal year.

PS4 shipped 14.59 million in its 2nd fiscal year.

The bar isn't really that high in comparison to 3DS, and the Switch is a much more desirable product than the 3DS.

Switch is not the Wii yet, but even the 3DS had enough demand to ship 17 million through March 2013. It might be readily available in certain parts of the world, but it is going to be in short supply in high demand markets like the US and Japan where Nintendo is a really strong brand.

March 2018 can easily see something like:

Japan: ~5.5 million
North America (not just US): ~7 million
Rest of World: ~5.5 million

It kind of depends on how big Splatoon 2 ends up being both in Japan (which should range from mega-hit to super-mega-hit) and the rest of the world where the original was a big success, but has clear room to grow. With the line up Nintendo has now, I expect there to supply issues pretty constantly for the foreseeable future, especially if it is still selling out in the US within minutes of stores opening.

At Target today (in the US). Had two switches in the display case! First time I'm seen actual physical stock of this in a store.

No switch thread to post this as they're closed now so will post it here as I found this quote from Zelda Wind Waker quite hilarious coming from the horse's mouth perfectly describing and admitting their consoles situation.

yes there are people who were alive in 2006 and are now dead, Nintendo is doomed, the whole industry is doomed, there's no point playing video game, we all gonna die someday

edit: ah sorry didnt realize you were joking

Nonsense. I know a couple of people who got one who either never bought a console, or haven't since the PS2. I showed it to my twin brother this weekend (we basically grew up on Nintendo together; NES, SNES, N64, NGC until we both moved out, he's a big pc gamer now). He said that's cool, must be a hit. I said sure a much bigger hit than Wii U. He looked at me nonplussed, the hell is a Wii U. This thing is making ripples far outside the Nintendo casual.

That sounds insane

Nope, that's what you get with Nintendo not being able to resupply or understand the retail chain/refusal to work with retailers. Sony send pallets of PS4's for months, not like one box of 14.. nope 100 per week per store. They tried their best to load balance orders from retailers and to keep them happy. Seeing them as an integral part of the success of the Playstation brand.

Nintendo? "Fuck it, we got our Scalper buddies!". I know it isn't as simple as starting "more production lines instantly" but it has been over a month. Nintendo would have been able to fix production by now, or at least see where the "thirst" is the highest and work with retailers to manage their supply chain better. But nope, ask most retailers and they'll tell you Nintendo hardly communicates, nor has people visit to check out store fronts and product placements and certainly doesn't have a "one name you can call to talk too" (aka multiple people per region that deals directly with storefronts) for your issues.

That is why one poster here could claim "In Denmark retailers refusal to stock it.", they are SICK of Nintendo and their failure to work with them. They are running all the risks and Nintendo runs none nor is willing to work with them. So yes, those that do stock, will try to "save up" for when they really need them. As they get like 14 each week, and they need hundreds come Holiday season. So that means 26 weeks to black friday times 7 = 182 Switches. So by that they can sell 7 each week and keep 7 in stock saving them up for the Black Friday sale. If Nintendo does get their arses in gear, they can easily sell their old stock first and start ordering new ones when they need them.

That's what you get if you let your retailers do your retail and stock management for you, rather then help them.

You are aware that Nintendo isn't the distributor in Denmark? It's Bergsala for all the Nordic countries.

Right but we're still in a historically low/slow period for video game hardware sales and demand is through the roof. Supply will obviously get better later in the year, but so will demand.

I must be more careful with my sarcasm!

I don't know if what I've said is nonsense, even after your two (!) anecdotal stories. I'm just thinking we wait to see how it pans out after the first year, yeah? I'll happily admit that I'm wrong for being cautious about Nintendo's long term success when we're a little more than two months into it.

Do we have any idea what day of the week the restocks typically drop?

I want to get a switch from gamestop as I have some old store credit but it really doesn't matter since I can always use it on more games...

As much as I loathe giving business to gamestop, both bundles that they have instock right now are good deals.

The neon system + Mario Kart 8 + joycon chargers + steering wheels for $399 is a solid deal if you've been having a hard time locating a unit, and Neon ones are the hardest to find.

I'm in Charleston and got a Neon one last week. Check istocknow.com, it seems like the Walmarts here are restocking every week although they sell out quick.

That's interesting because when asking Walmart employees they make it sound like they haven't gotten them since launch. That said maybe they just underestimate the minimal amount of shipments Nintendo sends out and how fast they sell out and they weren't on shift or something.

Thankfully I stopped by a Best Buy in Columbia and found several sitting there.

I've been following this thread and online stock trackers since launch and I still haven't found anything. Christ, Tampa, FL seems to be sucking up all the stock in central FL. Sarasota's been devoid of any models since launch.

Thanks guys for the istock suggestion. I was able to score a Switch fairly quickly. In case anyone in the West LA area is looking for one, Target at the Beverly Center (near Beverly Hills) seems to have 10+. I was able to score a neon one and they had quite a few behind the display case. It's strange because all the other stores around this area get like 1-2 max it seems.
