So how much are you willing to pay?

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
The Nintendo Shills that are defending Nintendo's greedy practices online show there is a big enough market willing to pay the crazy Prices. The Switch 2 will no doubt doubt Sell out for it's immediate future but again I wonder a year from now if the Mass Consumers are willing to shell out $80+ for a game. This issue goes much deeper than the Nintendo Switch 2. Graphics card prices have Skyrocketed in recent months but they continue to sell. Big Companies are openly Scalping card prices and it's typical to see new GPU's being charged at big box stars $400+ over the retail price. So what is your limit on how much you are willing to spend to support rising prices? My personal take is the overall Quality of games have dropped in the Shitter but they want to keep yelling about rising production cost. It's like Mcdonald's dropping your hamburger on the ground and charging you another $1 for your Mcdouble for the privilege.

Let me Re-phase this a different way:

If the big 3 (Sony,Microsoft,Nintendo) decided to start charging $150 a game within say 5 years. Or even if they keep saying rising cost and inflate the price to $250 a game. What is your breaking point?

Hardware? Lets say the PS6 launches at a cool $999.99? or Xbox makes a new Super powerful windows handheld retailing for $1499.99? Again, How much are you willing or able to spend to keep support "rising cost."

There is always a breaking point with the mass consumer when it comes to price. Prime example is the Apple Vision Pro. Apple fans are even more of a cultist group than even Nintendo fans. Normally you put apple on it and they buy, buy, buy! AT over $3000 the Apple Vision pro didn't sell.

I'm sticking to PC for now since I have been a PC main towards the later half of the PS3 Era. But I do plan to buy the Switch 2 eventually a couple of years or more down the line since they got true exclusives. And by that time I could see the next AAA Zelda game, a new Mario Party, and maybe news of another AAA Metroid. I don't plan to get the PS6 or XBOX since they are either also on PC or timed exclusives like Rebirth and Stellar Blade. I'm still using the same PC for over 8 years and I'll rather pay 1500 or more for my next PC because I'll get to mod and the PC is something I'll have on 99% of the time when I'm home.

I've seen people defending the pricing, but I couldn't tell if they were "shills" or not. I haven't paid full price for a game in a long time as I'm typically buying games on PC. Every once and awhile there's an exclusive that gets my money. But it's more of "how much money am I willing to spend on games in a month" than anything else.

If I HAD to choose a price, I think $60-$70 works for me.

Come on, man. Just accept that the Switch 2 was shit and move on, lol.
You don't have to make thousands of threads about it.
It's been daily at this point hasn't it? It's oddly obsessive, lmao.

$70 is already the breaking point for me. That’s 90 bucks canadian here, with taxes added that’s over 100. That’s why I rarely buy anything new now. As for hardware, the standard ps5 and series x were already expensive enough. If prices increase, that I guess I’m going ps6 only. Not like Nintendo or MS are exactly selling me on their future hardware right now anyway.

Just like at 70 - I'd buy some new games at 80, but it doesn't change the calculus much. I already buy much less new titles than I did at 50 USD, or even 60. So it's just a gradual decrease as I wait for more appealing price points (15-40).

$80 honestly feels like it's real damn close to my limit.

I won't pay that for a Mario Kart, honestly.

But I'd pay it for a Smash Bros. or a Zelda.
Yeah Mario Kart looks fun and all but 80 would be for the next AAA Zelda but only if it looks amazing with the good old N64 art style again and on the cartridge so it doesn't take up memory which some games would be. Although I'll be getting the 500 bundle with Mario Kart to save 30 bucks.

In most cases I would wait and snag a game a month or so later for 40 or 50ish

But thats not the case with Nintendo. Their games never go down and if they do its 5+ years later

I wish game companies would try to become beloved and cherished. People celebrated CDPR for giving Witcher 3 DLC away and they were perceived as the "good guys" so everybody supported them and I bet that worked out very well financially for CDPR.

Doesn't it make more financial sense to sell 50 million copies at $40 than to sell 25 million copies at $80?

And I swear it better not be a remake/remaster etc., for me Smash is my only limiting factor when it comes to buying the next Nintendo console, and I'm only getting one if they have a special edition geared to Smash only (what I did with the Switch when Ultimate was announced)

Im ok with overpriced hardware prices if i see the profit margins are low or breaking even i think its fair. When it comes to software i think it will reach a point where i just wait for discounts. Videgame hobby was never been cheaper when it comes to software. The amount of quality F2P games, makes me think i could very well keep enjoying the hobby just with that. But thankfully, premium games are on discounts all the time. So drop the FOMO and wait for discounts if you not happy with software prices. Its all about voting with your wallet. If an overpriced game has poor sales, it will not take long untill it drops in price. Now if you are a dick eater and support these prices cuz your favorite company makes them, then you deserve to keep eating dicks.

No nintendo game is worth 80 dollars unless they wanna start creating actual deep and interesting stories for there games, have much more voice acting in there games, have wayyyyy more animations/mocap for there games etc etc. It's not like these 80 dollar games are getting massive budgets and massive amounts of investment into them. Nintendo are doing what they've always done but now they're charging fans more because they know there fanbase will gobble it up ala pokemon style.

I see it over and over, but it's just not true. Within the year or two, you can find discounts, particularly at major holiday sales. Will it be 20? Not for flagship titles, but you could find them in the range of 35-50. Yes, it is true they don't immediately crater to zero like an Ubisoft game, but there is middle ground there to consider. Echoes of Wisdom, a first party title releasing at 60 just last September (about six months ago), can be found for 40 USD right now. Previously has been as low as 35 or so. Yes, it's not TotK, but I wanted to use an example within the last 12 months of a first party Nintendo title. TotK, since mentioned, did hold longer, but by the following Christmas (1.5 years) it could be had for 30 USD at Walmart holiday sale. Let's stop with the "5+ year permanent 60 or 70 USD" thing.

I'm not going to read another one of your impenetrable walls of text, but, to answer the question in the title: $499 for the Switch 2 Mario Kart bundle, $69.99 for Metroid Prime 4, $69.99 for Eldin Ring, and probably eventually also $69.99 for Donkey Kong. Presumably $79.99 for 3D Mario. I don't give a fuck.

I paid almost $100 for Turok 2. $80-90 for Mario Kart seems like a bargain in comparison.

People are going to have a lot of sticker shock over the next couple of years as the economy crashes because of politics.

I only pay full price now when It's a game I REALLY want, or only to support the game if I believe it to be unique and not likely to get much support from the masses.

I look for sales 99% of the time. I don't give a fuck about being there day 1, it means absolutely nothing. Pre-ordering is also a scam, more so now than back in the day. EB Games would give you free T-shirts or other tchotchkes when you would pre-order. So you would actually get something for it. Not a different colored in-game gun.

We can limit speculation somewhat, depending on what you mean by "breaking point".

The PS3 launching at USD$599 in 2006 would be close to USD$950 today. It sold, but not well enough, and required some pretty substantial cuts to get it to a price point for mass adoption. Today, we're seeing the PS5 Pro sell, but not flying off the shelves. So, we can guesstimate that the upper limit for adoption of new hardware today would be between the base PS5 Pro's USD$700 and the inflated PS3's USD$950. Launching console hardware for USD$1000 today would likely prevent mass adoption, so I'd say that's the breaking point.

For software, it's a little harder to put a range together. We know that titles prices at USD$70 sell slower than titles priced at USD$60, so we're obviously already trending towards the upper limit already. However, they are indeed still selling, and companies like Sony are clearly happy to take smaller sales if it means greater overall profits. This is different to hardware, which is necessary to create the platform on which to sell software so it needs to reach a critical mass, which means the upper limit for software could be much higher because critical mass isn't needed - outside of multiplayer titles. So, USD$100? Still entirely feasible depending on the title. I'd say the breaking point for software would be closer to USD$150 today - and even then, if it as a landmark titles like GTAVI, it could still be profitable despite the noticeable hit in sales.

For consoles we have reached the breaking point. I'm not paying 700 euros for a PS5 or 500 euro for a handheld.
As for games, they have creached the breaking point a long time ago. I don't pay more then 20 euros for a game.

I'm willing to buy Switch 2 because it has games I want to play, that my entire motivation for buying any system.

My breaking point was with PS5pro since thats not a new system, its Pro version system I already own.

I'm not gonna pay $950 + $100 for disc drive just for graphical upgrade.....I'm not graphic whore enough that I'm willing to spend that type of money just for better graphics.

There won't be a "Breaking Point", if there is one I think we are teetering on its edge if we haven't already surpassed it. I have already started playing more and more older/cheaper games gradually over the last couple years. I spend more time emulating or replaying stuff I already played or goofing around with buddies rather than going for the shiny new things. The number of trailers I have watched (including gameplay and reviews) in 2024 has been around 15 max. Bought only 3 games I think.

As the prices are getting more and more prohibitive people are slowly shifting to playing older/free games or piracy or shifting to new hobbies and playing less games. The "Breaking Point" will be when there is an economical bubble burst I suppose, but thats above my pay grade since I don't have a degree in finance and I only care about the things within my circle of control, and I don't know what it will look like or what will trigger it.

Again with this shit…

1. Do not compare a hardcore enthusiast market with a family entertainment market. Singles have disposable income and less expenses than families. Also the market is smaller.
2. Nvidia dedicated graphics market decreased by 11% YoY as per their last earnings report. So even the biggest cock in town has difficulty selling unless these flare AI chips.

GTA is a once in a generation event, if companies think they can price their games at the same level they are mistaken.

$70 is already pushing me towards being extremely certain of the quality and personal appeal of a game. At $20-$40 I'll gladly buy some games of questionable quality. I'm getting fewer and fewer full price games even if my time gaming hasn't changed at all.

If games end up going $100+ for base content well then fuck it... emulation, backlog and the high seas will be the life for me.

For games? $60, RARELY $70. I'll usually just wait for something to come down in price or else buy

For systems, it depends. I'm definitely willing to spend a little more once to have access to a lot of great games than I am getting nickle and dimed on each game. Speaking of, I really have to get into PC gaming one of these days.

nothing.

for the 2 games (at best) direct from nintendo.... I can wait several years before buying a switch
Nintendo first party games won’t drop in price over those several years.

You’re waiting for nothing.

The only legitimate reason to wait to buy one is for a Switch 2 mini.

For the system itself the breaking point would have to be quite high I think. As long as I see value in what I’m getting, the software is compelling, and it’s priced competitively to the rest of the systems available I’d likely buy it. In the grand scheme of things it’s a one-time purchase that’ll last for 8-10 years.

Games are more difficult. I already think going upwards to $80 is ridiculous. I’ll still buy stuff, but naturally I’ll be way more selective. Mario Kart World better be a 9.8/10 kind of klart racing game.

I normally buy on steam around 19.99 or less. At most, 29.99 - and almost never over 39.99.

Not playing the latest and greatest doesn’t bother me at all… as by the time I am done with game that I am playing, the prices are normally in deep discount anyway.

On consoles - I pay full price, but only very few exclusives on Switch. I don’t buy anything on Xbox as I have game pass - other than BC OG Xbox or 360 game that are not on PC on sale. PS5 - I have not turned it on or bought anything for so long, that I am feeling guilty.
