So how would you improve Lumines?

Baron Aloha

A Shining Example
Much has been said about how awesome this game is...but how could you improve it for a sequel?

Some ideas:

More songs with vocals - Shining, Lights, I Hear the Music in My Soul, and Shake Your Body are the most memorable songs in Lumines. There need to be more songs like these IMO.

Get rid of single skin mode and replace it with a custom mode where you can create your own playlist of one or more skins that loop over and over again. This way you can play only your favorite skins without things getting dull like they sometimes do in single skin mode.

Let players create custom skins. They could let you set up a directory where you could put image files for the blocks, backgrounds, etc plus music and sound fx.

just two suggesstions:

make games take less time to play.. having to invest over an hour per game is geting a bit silly now

make is so that i can get 999,999 - but nobody else can!

You don't have to play that long. :\ That's what Single Skin, Timed Mode, and Puzzle Mode are for.

Challenge is, well, a *challenge* and the game wouldn't be the same with out 2-4 minute songs. :(

I want to see perhaps a new "special" of some sort added. Something not game-breaking, obviously, though I don't have any personal suggestions.

I would also like to see songs that fundamentall change halfway through, like tempo changes or something. So you think you'd be kicking ass and all and in the middle of the song, the scanline speeds up or slows down drastically in time with the back beat. Perhaps also a pitch/sound modifier attached to the L and R triggers to further enhance the sound customization.

If there's going to be a challenge mode, at least let the song progression be random. Or do what Klax did, if you make a certain pattern you gain mega bonus boints and you leap ahead 10 levels, saving you time. I too hate investing an hour of gameplay hoping I can beat my personal best of 188K.

you got some realy good ideas there, i agree on them all.

now to add something to this thread, i have to say that the background are so cool in this game, why not let us interact with them?
add more animations and why not an entire level that you have to build special blocks to change the animations in the background or change the music.

i would want more special abilities blocks.

well i guess thats it..i love lumines as it is so if they decide not to change awhole lot i will still be happy

DDR-style courses of different skins, with high-scores for each course. When you've unlocked all the skins needed for a course, the course is unlocked as well.

Shuffle Mode which is like Single Skin mode except the skin changes randomly from the ones you've already unlocked.

A 'double-special' block would be interesting, which 2 special squares so you could trigger both colours at the same time if you set it off correctly.

Random Skin Mode.
I hate starting with Shinin and knowing what's next
I hate that when I start with Shakeyobody, it never changes.

Most memorable is not always a good thing! I can't stand "Shake Your Body" and always want to hurry past that skin.

Still, good ideas. I've just been looking for an outlet to whine about SYB.

The ability to start at a skin you already have unlocked in challenge mode. At the rate I'm going I'll never see lights.

-I'd make it so sleep mode has no chance of ruining a high score

-I'd make it so if you get the right pieces, you can't get a free 10k or even 20k at the very beginning

what free 10k 20k in the beginning?

It seems like the first song is the only one with a distinct "B Section" - I wish more songs had a breakdown like that.

Also, the playing field I think is too wide. I find myself concentrating on one side, then suddenly I realize I better work on the other side - it kind of breaks up the flow.

oh yeah - another sensible one

both players should get the same order of pices in a VS mode game - its a pain in the arse when the other player gets better pieces at the start than you!

You can get the bonus at any time on any skin, but its obviously much easier to do if you get the right blocks at the very start of the game.

You can also get a single-colour bonus for leaving only blocks of one colour on the playarea. I think thats only about 1000 points though.

I like this idea.

Aside from being more fair, it would also be a fun way to see how different minds work.

Yeah, I was quite surprised when I noticed it wasn't the same. Should be like Puyo Puyo and be identical.

Am I just blind or is there no score tracking for most of the modes? vs CPU, timed mode, single skin, etc.

really wish that was in there if it's not.

VOLUME CONTROL. I swear the music doesn't seem loud enough in Lumines. More differences between the skins would be nice, giving it a completely different feel. Also, performance having a more substantial affect on the music ala REZ would be brilliant, but i'm not sure how they could implement that.

i'm not sure about the other modes, but there is one for single skin mode. The thing is that the score box is filled with the number of blocks being cleared (or whatever it is) as the scanline deletes the blocks. i hardly ever glance at the score due to this and the fact that i've got to keep my eye on what blocks are coming next and where to put them.

i know Mizaguchi made comments about 24 being an influence in Meteos, but i feel it in Lumines. The next block preview, current block, main area, and score/info all feel like separate scenes being shown as in 24. Sometimes the main area feels like two or three scenes in itself, depending on how i've arranged things. i'll occasionally focus on half of the screen and suddenly realize i've got a great combo opportunity by starting on the other half of the screen.

needs more blood, more prostitutes, and it needs to be more realistic... and throw in some western art for good measure.

The one thing I would change is when playing versus mode against the CPU, I would like to be able to do a re-match if I lose. I don't like starting the ladder over. Nothing major, but that is the only thing I would change.

ubisoft - smolder with generic rage

Lumines 2 soundtrack to feature the entire Godsmack music library as well as some B-sides and demo tapes you've enevr een heard of!!!!!

i'd really like a co-op puzzle mode where players can tag each other into the game

That'd be cool, or maybe a co-op mode where the screen is split like vs, but if either loses you both lose.

hell, to keep players on their toes and communicating as much as possible maybe the control switches randomly....kind of like hot potato.

Haha, or when the skins swap, you could swap thier screens and you have to play with a board of pieces based off somebody elses train of thought.

This is a matter of taste. I cringe every time Shake Your Body comes on. My preference goes with the instrumentals.

Totally agree, whenever i play lights i have to crank up the sound to 3/4 full to listen to it normally.

The one thing i hate most at this point is that in the VS. mode you're always behind the 8 ball because the line passes the CPU last. Can't tell you how many times i've gotten f*cked because i'll start with 2 of these blocks in a row

XO
OX

and the CPU will start with 2

XX
XX

and then it's all downhill from there.

Right now i've beaten the mouse exactly 1 time and the 1 time i saw the vampire he double single colored squared me the first 2 scans and i was toast. If i ever see all 7 levels beaten it will be nothing short of an act of god.

One thing I was kind of hoping for in Lumines (and surprised it didn't make it in) would be to have the song start out just beats, then add elements every time you cleared away some squares... kind of like Rez.

I agree with most comments so far. Random unlocked skin mode would be a great addition, even if it has no scoring. I am very satisfied with how the sound effects created by interaction integrate into the songs. No change needed there IMO.

Haha, don't worry. I used to feel the same way (and yeah, it's not fair that CPU always has more time to react in the first swipe) but you'll see, it's not that impossible at all. I can make it to level 8 or 9 (out of 10 total) almost every time I play, and I'm not even like these wizards who can score 999.999 (my record is 3 hundred something thousands). I must admit I managed to beat the whole vs. CPU mode only once though, but I didn't play it much since I did that.

How to improve Lumines...

for one, port it to consoles so I dont go BLIND LOOKING AT THE PSP FOR 1+ HOURS

I think it would be nice if they added an A and B mode like in Tetris on GB. You could start from scratch with A or choose a difficulty (or stage) to start on with B. I'm pretty sure Dr. Mario did this too. Starting challenge mode from scratch every time is kind of a drag.

- ability to start from any skin in Challenge mode, but it only records your high score if you start from the beginning.

- the "skin playlist" idea is a good one.

- in the 2-player game, each player should get the same blocks in the same order.

- downloadable skins/music also a good idea.

- maybe customizable skins? Choose from a variety of background colors, upload some JPEGs and mp3s to your memory stick...

Amen brother. I was also going to mention that Lumines deserves a home port if only so you have the ability to listen to the music with a proper audio system.

-More detailed statistics on the hi-score chart.
-Like someone already mentioned, the ability to make custom skins via imported images and music.

What's stopping you from listening to music from PSP on your audio system?

They did make games that take less time to play, although that game is called Meteos, where you get your dick kicked in the dirt in under 3 minutes flat.
