I laughed at that too. Ignorant and using outdated slang. If I were the OP the minute they said that I would've died laughing
yeah

i can relate to the op though. i went to prep schools my whole life so i grew up hearing this all the time. Never really bothered me though. I would just mess around and give that person a hard time whenever i heard it

Didn't realize this still happened outside of High School.

No age limit on idiocy I guess.

What do you think happens to these people after high school? It's not like they have careers.

Were you throwing a lot of big words at them? Sometimes if people don't understand them, they'll take them as disrespect.
No. I simply used proper English and politely asked if they would quiet down, but they took that as me being disrespectful and using "big words"...which now that I think about it were pretty simple.

It's weird, I was always the smart black kid growing up since elementary school but this never happened to me even though I grew up around these types of people. The ghetto wannabes who didn't care about school, got into fights and stuff like that. Instead everyone kinda thought...like, I was just super smart. Like because I was black and smart, I could build them robots and stuff like that. It was pretty funny. Everyone also made a big deal when I got into a good university. I don't think I've been said to be acting white, except by non-black people who said it because I wasn't acting stereotypically ghetto

lol hahaha they're just hating on you for being successful. don't stress just know that haters going to hate. fukk em. I'd be pissed at them for being ghetto bums and not being successful cuz they're sh!tty role models to future black kids.

A little backstory: I'm a black male in my early twenties who by a miracle (read: connections) managed to finish my degree, and land a decent paying (for a recent graduate anyhow) "White collar" job for a clothing chain where I live.

Technically, I was off today, and after settling in to my apartment after a day out I get a call saying they need me to be a temporary manager for the day for a store about 10 miles away from where I lived. Since they were paying me extra since it was my day off, I was like "sure what the hell". I had nothing better to do.

I get there, and find out the manager went home sick. Why they didn't have workers who could handle not being supervised, I have no clue. But I said screw it, I'll have a few extra dollars when I get paid Friday. Anyway, things go smooth for the first couple of hours or with no incidents and people being checked out quickly and efficiently with little to no problems while I made sure everyone stayed on task.

Then....an hour before we were going to close, I run into this shit. Basically, a group of black males came into the store, of course acting ignorant as fuck, and I just shook my head hoping they wouldn't cause any trouble and they'd do their business and GTFO.

No sooner than I think this, they started to act ghetto and loud. This, naturally, annoys the fuck out of me, so I tell them to quiet it down.

Guy 1: Hey, XXX, look at this fool all dressed up and thinking he hot shit
Me:...Excuse me?
Guy 2: Yeah, dis Ni**a do think he all that. Where you get that controlling attitude boy and using all them big words? Think cuz the white folks gave you a job you think you can talk down to us
Me: No, I just think...
Guy 1: Nobody cares what you think white boy! Go on and be wit yo fellow crackers you fucking traitorous sellout ni**a
Guy 2: Let's blow this joint....not enough real N**as in here
*They leave with me speechless*

GAF I'm in shock. Like, I didn't know what to say. I didn't talk to anyone for the rest of the night and any attempt at conversation about the subject was quickly dropped.

I mean...what the fuck? Just because I have a good job I'm a sellout? And I speak proper english? Ugh. I'm just...angry. Angry that there are people who actually HATE people reaching sucess from my own race.

GAF should I have said more to defend myself? Or was I right in letting it go?

You were right in letting it go. Fuck them, be successful and enjoy life.

They're actually proud to act dumb and ignorant and talk that way, they're making no effort to better themselves and their life situation. If you can't help them, just ignore punks like that.

This has always been a problem in our community, and I fear that it always will.

The minute you try to better yourself, you get accused of being a sell-out, or not being black enough. The minute you realize that you're not satisfied with what everyone else is satisfied with, they start to hate. Try to leave them, they'll try to pull you back.

Whatever, I can't be bothered with the ignorants anymore.

I was just thinking about someone in a managerial role acting ghetto. lol

"Yo Erika! Erika! De bitch need servin".

"Excuse me?"

"Yeah, yeah! I mean bitch in a good way"

+1 mirrion

I don't know if it's an African-American thing but as an actual African who lived there once we don't identify ourselves with all black people so much. Is it because you feel a sense of fraternity with those dumbasses that it stings? You're clearly not subjugating yourself to the stereotypes that their living their lives by so don't let their misguided opinions effect you.

Also reminds me of the Lupe Fiasco song "Dumb It Down", specifically the chorus/hook

You goin' over n**gas' heads Lu (Dumb it down)
They tellin' me that they don't feel you (Dumb it down)
We ain't graduate from school n**ga (Dumb it down)

They're trying to graduate from school Lu (Dumb it down)
They're starting to think that smart is cool Lu (Dumb it down)
They're trying to get up out the hood Lu (Dumb it down)
I'll tell you what you should do (Dumb it down)

You putting me to sleep n**ga (Dumb it down)
That's why you ain't popping in the streets n**ga (Dumb it down)
You ain't winning no awards n**ga (Dumb it down)

They're just jelly that you got some legally, self-earned cash in your pocket while they barely have proper clothing. Just ignore those those people, they're everywhere in the world.

Feels bad man.

People need to stop glorifying stupidity.

Don't feel bad, I've had it happen to me countless times at this point in my life.

You need to keep one of these handy.

This statement couldn't be more sweeping...

Never had this problem (though I'm sure some of you have). Though, in my community education and self-betterment is praised.

My sister use to do the same thing whenever I listened to my Linkin park CDs

Hell my parents do that. Not with LP but pretty much anything that isn't either rap or Motown. Some of the stuff I listen to their brains don't even process as music.

To all unedumucated folks out there:

Its not trendy/cool to be ignorant.

This. A thousand times this. I mean, I don't get it, I really don't. It's kind of, from my perspective the same as the "no snitching" culture. I understand why blacks often have little trust for the police, and little respect for the institutions of society. Historically we as a society have shit all over blacks and actually institutionally actively worked to disenfranchise them.

But saying that I don't understand celebrating and indeed REVELING in being marginalized to the extent that it's viewed as a negative thing when you DO manage to break through and "make it" to a better position and a better life. As I said, it's like the no snitching. I get why you wouldn't trust the police, I don't understand why you tolerate violence and criminality when you actually have a chance to protect yourself and your community from it.
